Book Reflecting the Eternal

Download or read book Reflecting the Eternal written by Marsha Daigle-Williamson and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characters, plots, and potent language of C. S. Lewis's novels reveal everywhere the modern writer' admiration for Dante's Divine Comedy. Throughout his career Lewis drew on the structure, themes, and narrative details of Dante's medieval epic to present his characters as spiritual pilgrims growing toward God. Dante's portrayal of sin and sanctification, of human frailty and divine revelation, are evident in all of Lewis's best work. Readers will see how a modern author can make astonishingly creative use of a predecessor's material - in this case, the way Lewis imitated and adapted medieval ideas about spiritual life for the benefit of his modern audience. Nine chapters cover all of Lewis's novels, from Pilgrim's Regress and his science-fiction to The Chronicles of Narnia and Till We Have Faces. Readers will gain new insight into the sources of Lewis's literary imagination that represented theological and spiritual principles in his clever, compelling, humorous, and thoroughly human stories.

Book excerpt: In Pilgrim Letters, Curtis Freeman takes disciples on a contemporary journey into an ancient faith. The book is a series of letters written by "Interpreter" to "Pilgrim" that provide "instruction in the basic teaching of Christ" for candidates preparing to be baptized. The letters are framed by a short catechism based on the six principles enumerated in Hebrews 6:1-2--(1) repentance, (2) faith, (3) baptism, (4) laying on of hands, (5) resurrection, and (6) eternal judgment. The letters lead Pilgrim (the disciple/catechumen/baptismal candidate) step by step through the basics of Christian faith. Each letter explores one of the principles by providing a simple explanation and setting the practice within a broad biblical, historical, and theological context. The theological tenor of the letters is evangelical-catholic, free church-ecumenical, and ancient-future. A set of discussion questions follows each letter as does a short bibliography for further reading. Each letter begins with an image from William Blake's illustrations of John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress and exemplifying the subject of the letter, followed by an epigraph from the story that fits into the themes of the catechism.

Book excerpt: The annual Lenten pilgrimage to dozens of Rome’s most striking churches is a sacred tradition dating back almost two millennia, to the earliest days of Christianity. Along this historic spiritual pathway, today’s pilgrims confront the mysteries of the Christian faith through a program of biblical and early Christian readings amplified by some of the greatest art and architecture of western civilization. In Roman Pilgrimage, bestselling theologian and papal biographer George Weigel, art historian Elizabeth Lev, and photographer Stephen Weigel lead readers through this unique religious and aesthetic journey with magnificent photographs and revealing commentaries on the pilgrimage’s liturgies, art, and architecture. Through reflections on each day’s readings about faith and doubt, heroism and weakness, self-examination and conversion, sin and grace, Rome’s familiar sites take on a new resonance. And along that same historical path, typically unexplored treasures—artifacts of ancient history and hidden artistic wonders—appear in their original luster, revealing new dimensions of one of the world’s most intriguing and multi-layered cities. A compelling guide to the Eternal City, the Lenten Season, and the itinerary of conversion that is Christian life throughout the year, Roman Pilgrimage reminds readers that the imitation of Christ through faith, hope, and love is the template of all true discipleship, as the exquisite beauty of the Roman station churches invites reflection on the deepest truths of Christianity.

The birth was one month premature and he weighted a whopping 2 and pounds. After 2 weeks in an incubator, he was taken home and placed in his first crib, a top drawer of the bedroom bureau. Three years later he and his older brother and sister lost their parents and were placed in foster homes. Milton spent the next 15 years in 12 different foster homes. After graduating from high school and earning a scholarship to Michigan State University, he was only able to secure finances for one year, and spent the next 25 years working in a variety of sales jobs. He was married 3 times. He has 5 children and one step child. Milton met his third wife Christina in 1973 and they moved from Los Angeles to the Montana/Idaho area where he took a job working as a miner. For 3 years he worked 5,000 feet under ground in the Galina silver mine at Wallace Idaho. Latter he and Christina purchased a local locksmith business, which he made his career for the next 18 years, retiring as Master Locksmith and housing security specialist for The Evergreen State College at Olympia Washington, in 1998. He and his wife chose to spend their final years living in southern Mexico, near the City of Oaxaca. His beloved wife, of 33 years, Christina passed away in 2006 and 7 months later he was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of bladder cancer. After major surgery and 6 months of Chemo-therapy, he is cancer free. He now lives alone in a beautiful country setting surrounded by 100 tropical fruit trees in a 3 bedroom Bungalow on a walled in property. For transportation he has a small Chevy car and a Yamaha motor scooter to get around on for quick trips to the store. For company he has two dogs and a cat. In the tranquil atmosphere of this little bit of paradise he has decided to write essays dealing with what he feels are important spiritual topics that have been his quest for more than five decades.
