Book On the Eternal in Man

Download or read book On the Eternal in Man written by Max Scheler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Max Scheler (1874-1928) decisively influenced German philosophy in the period after the First World War, a time of upheaval and new beginnings. Without him, the problems of German philosophy today, and its attempts to solve them would be quite inconceivable. What was new in his philosophy was that he used phenomenology to investigate spiritual realities. The subject of On the Eternal in Man is the divine and its reality, the originality and non-derivation of religious experience. Scheler shows the characteristic quality of that which is religious. It is a particular essence that cannot be reduced to anything else. It is a sphere that belongs essentially to humankind; without it we would not be human. If genuine fulfillment is denied it, substitutes come into being. This religious sphere is the most essential, decisive one. It determines man's basic attitude towards reality and in a sense the color, extent and position of all the other human domains in life. It forms the basis for various views about life and thought. Scheler was emphatically an intuitive philosopher. In Scheler's work the break between being as the almighty but blind rage and value as the knowing but powerless spirit-has become complete, and makes of each human a split being. Personal experiences may be reflected here. The development of Scheler's work as a whole was highly dependent on his personal experiences. It is this that gives Scheler's work its liveliness and its validity.

An adventure among the afflicted, A Gentle Madness is vividly anecdotal and thoroughly researched. Download or read book Man Seeks God written by Eric Weiner and published by Hachette+ORM. This book was released on 2011-12-05 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author of Geography of Bliss returns with this funny, illuminating chronicle of a globe-spanning spiritual quest to find a faith that fits. When a health scare puts him in the hospital, Eric Weiner-an agnostic by default-finds himself tangling with an unexpected question, posed to him by a well-meaning nurse. "Have you found your God yet?" The thought of it nags him, and prods him-and ultimately launches him on a far-flung journey to do just that. Weiner, a longtime "spiritual voyeur" and inveterate traveler, realizes that while he has been privy to a wide range of religious practices, he's never seriously considered these concepts in his own life. Face to face with his own mortality, and spurred on by the question of what spiritual principles to impart to his young daughter, he decides to correct this omission, undertaking a worldwide exploration of religions and hoping to come, if he can, to a personal understanding of the divine. The journey that results is rich in insight, humor, and heart. Willing to do anything to better understand faith, and to find the god or gods that speak to him, he travels to Nepal, where he meditates with Tibetan lamas and a guy named Wayne. He sojourns to Turkey, where he whirls (not so well, as it turns out) with Sufi dervishes. He heads to China, where he attempts to unblock his chi; to Israel, where he studies Kabbalah, sans Madonna; and to Las Vegas, where he has a close encounter with Raelians (followers of the world's largest UFO-based religion). At each stop along the way, Weiner tackles our most pressing spiritual questions: Where do we come from? What happens when we die? How should we live our lives? Where do all the missing socks go? With his trademark wit and warmth, he leaves no stone unturned. At a time when more Americans than ever are choosing a new faith, and when spiritual questions loom large in the modern age, Man Seeks God presents a perspective on religion that is sure to delight, inspire, and entertain.

Book Eternal Consciousness

Download or read book Eternal Consciousness written by John S. Dunne and published by University of Notre Dame Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his new book, John S. Dunne asks: "So what is eternal consciousness? It is, I take it, consciousness of the eternal in us. If time is 'a changing image of eternity, ' as Plato says, the changing image of the human being is like "The Voyage of Life," four paintings by Thomas Cole, showing childhood, youth, adulthood, and age. The eternal in us is the person going through these phases. It is the vertical dimension of the life, as in the title scene of "War and Peace" where Prince Andre lay on the battlefield looking up into the peaceful sky, perceiving peace in the midst of war. If the horizontal dimension is time and the vertical dimension is eternity, then eternal consciousness is awareness of the vertical dimension. What is more, the vertical dimension carries through the horizontal, as the person walks through life upright instead of being dragged through in 'quiet desperation.' Willingness and hope, accordingly, is willingness to walk through upright with hope in the face of death and darkness." --"from the book" What can I know? What should I do? What may I hope? Dunne explores these questions in his characteristic hermeneutic method, finding the answer in "the words of eternal life" (John 6:68). It is the life of the spirit that is the eternal in us, the inner life of knowing and loving, the life of hope and peace and friendship and intelligence. "If there were no eternal consciousness in a man," Kierkegaard says, "what then would life be but despair?" John Dunne adds, if there" is" eternal consciousness in us, on the other hand, there is hope. To readers of John Dunne's books, "Eternal Consciousness" will be the latest installment chronicling his spiritual journey; to readers new to Dunne's oeuvre, it will be a lively introduction to the distinctive voice and thought of an inspiring author. "As action grows more frantic and voices more shrill in this age of terror, John Dunne's wisdom, born of Eternal Consciousness, shows us and leads us into our true selves--never unloved, never abandoned, willing to walk on with God through life into the very gateway of death itself." --Jon Nilson, Loyola University Chicago

  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book The Book of Eternal Life written by Delroy Douglas and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-26 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has always been my luring ambition to write a book of the most unusual kind or a book of a very unorthodox nature, a book that is void of the glorification of sex and violence, and a book that would be acceptable to God and Man. The book has been in my head all this time but I just didn't know where to begin because the ideas weren't flowing. However, after a phenomenal and electrifying experience, the ideas for such a book came to mind like a bolt of lightning...I was literally struck on the head by a bolt of lightning! The lightning picked me up from the ground and held me in suspension for a little while with a dazzling light round about my head with my body fully electrified. The remarkable thing was that while this was happening, I was not only fully electrified but fully conscious as well. After a while in suspension I was lowered to the ground in complete slow motion on my rear. What was really phenomenal about this shocking experience was the fact that not a single lock of hair on my head was singed or burned... there was no smoke undulating from my head! After this electrifying incident, I was never the same again... I'm convinced that the bolt of lightning that struck me on the head had transformed my mind into the 'Mind of God' and I began to think and speak differently. I became an avid reader of the Bible and it was after my experience with the Bible that the book in my head became very clear to me. I knew there and then I had to write 'The Book Of Life'.It's my solemn hope that every reader will find this book not only enlightening but electrifying as well.

Book The Eternal Now

Download or read book The Eternal Now written by Paul Tillich and published by Scm Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These 16 sermons contain in concentrated form some of Tillich's most lambent themes. Although they were first published in the early 1960s, the pieces in question take up preoccupations which continue to haunt us at the beginning of the 21st century. Tillich discusses, among other topics, wisdom; salvation; loneliness and solitude; creation in relation to the creator; inequality; and spiritual presence. He has a desire to make sense of the fundamental mystery of Christian theology: the paradox of the moment which is now wherein comes the mystery which is eternity.
