Book Spectral Methods for the Estimation of the Effective Elastic Thickness of the Lithosphere

Download or read book Spectral Methods for the Estimation of the Effective Elastic Thickness of the Lithosphere written by Jonathan Kirby and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-25 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although several excellent works exist that describe the effective elastic thickness (Te) of the lithosphere—its theory, significance and relevance to Earth sciences in general—none cover the details of the methods for its estimation. This book brings together the disparate knowledge required to estimate Te in one handy volume: signal processing, harmonic analysis, civil engineering, and foundational mathematics and physics, in addition to the relevant geophysics and, to a lesser extent, geology. Its two principal focus areas are spectral estimation, covering various approaches to estimating the admittance and coherence between gravity and topography using Slepian multitapers and fan wavelets; and algebraic and finite difference solutions of the plate bending partial differential equation in a variety of geological settings. This book would be suitable for postgraduate students beginning their research, up to faculty professors interested in diversifying their skills.

Book Optical Measurement of Surface Topography

Download or read book Optical Measurement of Surface Topography written by Richard Leach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measurement and characterisation of surface topography is crucial to modern manufacturing industry. The control of areal surface structure allows a manufacturer to radically alter the functionality of a part. Examples include structuring to effect fluidics, optics, tribology, aerodynamics and biology. To control such manufacturing methods requires measurement strategies. There is now a large range of new optical techniques on the market, or being developed in academia, that can measure areal surface topography. Each method has its strong points and limitations. The book starts with introductory chapters on optical instruments, their common language, generic features and limitations, and their calibration. Each type of modern optical instrument is described (in a common format) by an expert in the field. The book is intended for both industrial and academic scientists and engineers, and will be useful for undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

Book Mathematics of the Discrete Fourier Transform DFT

Download or read book Mathematics of the Discrete Fourier Transform DFT written by Julius O. Smith and published by Julius Smith. This book was released on 2008 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The DFT can be understood as a numerical approximation to the Fourier transform. However, the DFT has its own exact Fourier theory, and that is the focus of this book. The DFT is normally encountered as the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)--a high-speed algorithm for computing the DFT. The FFT is used extensively in a wide range of digital signal processing applications, including spectrum analysis, high-speed convolution (linear filtering), filter banks, signal detection and estimation, system identification, audio compression (such as MPEG-II AAC), spectral modeling sound synthesis, and many others. In this book, certain topics in digital audio signal processing are introduced as example applications of the DFT"--Back cover

Book Proceedings of the Second International Workshop on the Analysis of Multi Temporal Remote Sensing Images

Download or read book Proceedings of the Second International Workshop on the Analysis of Multi Temporal Remote Sensing Images written by Paul Smits and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of effective methodologies for the analysis of multi-temporal data is one of the most important and challenging issues that the remote sensing community will face in the coming years. Its importance and timeliness are directly related to the ever-increasing quantity of multi-temporal data provided by the numerous remote sensing satellites that orbit our planet. The synergistic use of multi-temporal remote sensing data and advanced analysis methodologies results in the possibility of solving complex problems related to the monitoring of the Earth's surface and atmosphere at different scales. However, the advances in the methodologies for the analysis of multi-temporal data have been significantly under-illuminated with respect to other remote sensing data analysis topics. In addition, the link between the end-users' needs and the scientific community needs to be strengthened. This volume of proceedings contains 43 contributions from researchers representing academia, industry and governmental organizations. It is organized into three thematic sections: Image Analysis and Algorithms; Analysis of Synthetic Aperture Radar Data; Monitoring and Management of Resources.

Book Acoustic Field Analysis in Small Microphone Arrays

Download or read book Acoustic Field Analysis in Small Microphone Arrays written by Roman Scharrer and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2013 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, the possibilities of an acoustic field analysis in small microphone arrays are investigated. With the increased use of mobile communication devices, such as smartphones and hearing aids, and the increase in the number of microphones in such devices, multi-channel signal processing has gained popularity. Apart from the definite signal processing, this thesis evaluates what information on the acoustic sound field and environment can be gained from the signal of such small microphone arrays. For this purpose, an innovative sound field classification was developed that determines the energies of the single sound field components. The method is based on spatial coherences of two or more acoustical. The method was successfully verified with a set of simulated and measured input signals. An adaptive automatic sensor mismatch compensation was created, which proved able to fully compensate any slow sensor drift after an initial training. Further, a new method for the blind estimation of the reverberation time based on the dependency of the coherence estimate on the evaluation parameters was proposed. The method determines the reverberation time of a room from the spatial coherence between two or more acoustic sensors.

Book Oceanic Internal Tides Observations Analysis and Modeling

Download or read book Oceanic Internal Tides Observations Analysis and Modeling written by Eugene G. Morozov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed study of the structure and variability of internal tides and their geographical distribution in the ocean. Based on experimental analysis of oceanic measurements combined with numerical modeling, it offers a comprehensive overview of the internal wave processes around the globe. In particular, it is based on moored buoys observations in many regions in all oceans (Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, and Southern) that have been carried out by researchers from different countries for more than 40 years as part of various oceanographic programs, including WOCE and CLIVAR. However, a significant portion of the data was collected by the author, who is a field oceanographer. The data was processed and interpreted on the basis of the latest knowledge of internal wave motion. The properties of internal waves were analyzed in relation to the bottom topography and mean state of the ocean in specific regions. Internal waves play a major role in the formation of seawater stratification and are responsible for the main processes of ocean dynamics, such as energy transfer and mixing. One of the most significant ideas presented in this book is the generation of internal tides over submarine ridges. Energy fluxes from submarine ridges related to tidal internal waves greatly exceed the fluxes from continental slopes. Submarine ridges form an obstacle to the propagation of tidal currents, which can cause the creation of large amplitude internal tides. Energy fluxes from submarine ridges account for approximately one fourth of the total energy dissipation of the barotropic tides. Model simulations and moored measurements have been combined to generate a map of global distribution of internal tide amplitudes. This book is of interest to oceanographers, marine biologists, civil engineers, and scientists working in climate research, fluid mechanics, acoustics, and underwater navigation.
