Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of College Botany Again, it was formerly the very general practice of teachers to present the subject of plant study beginning with the higher plants, and indeed devoting the far greater time to them, so that the sequence was from the higher to the lower forms. However, with the more complete acceptance of the doctrine of evolution the opposite sequence from the lower forms to the higher has become the general rule, since it permits greater emphasis to be placed upon the progressive structural changes by which higher organisms have been evolved from lower. Book Fundamentals of Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fundamentals of Botany Classic Reprint written by C. Stuart Gager and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals of Botany From the standpoint of pure science, the most funda mental problem of botany is that of the development of the individual plant; the ultimate problem that of the development of the kingdom of plants. In other words the foundation and the ultimate goal are, respectively, ontogeny (life-history of the individual) and phylogeny (life - history of the race). Ontogeny is fundamental because without a knowledge of its processes the processes of phylogeny cannot be com prehended. Phylogeny is the ultimate problem because its complete solution involves an orderly description of all the phenomena of plant life, and their relation to each other. Thanks to the nature-study movement, most students have nowadays acquired some knowledge of the parts and a few of the functions of a flowering plant before they take up the study of formal botany; for such, Chapter II will serve only as a timely review; for others, as an essential preparation for the subsequent chapters of Part I. Book A Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint written by EDUARD. STRASBURGER and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Botany IT is customary to place all living beings in either the animal 01 vegetable kingdoms, but in reality a sharp boundary line between animals and plants first becomes possible when they exhibit a complicated structure. In those of more simple organisation all distinctions disappear, and it becomes difficult to define the exact limits of Botany and Zoology. This, in fact, could scarcely be otherwise, as all the processes of life, in both the animal and vegetable kingdoms, are dependent On the same substance, protoplasm. With more complicated organisation, the specific differences increase, and the characteristics distinguishing animal from vegetable life become more obvious. For the present, it must be confessed, the recognition Of an organism, as an animal or a plant, is dependent upon its corre spondence with an abstract idea of what a plant or animal Should be, .based on certain points of agreement between the members of each class. A satisfactory basis for the Separation of all living organisms into the categories of animals or plants can only be obtained when it is shown that all organisms distinguished as animals are in reality genetically connected, and that a similar connection exists between all plants. The proof of this can only be arrived at through the theory OF evolution. From the study of the fossil remains and impressions Of animals and plants, it has been established that in former epochs forms Of life. Differing from those of the present age existed on the earth. It is also generally assumed that all living animals and plants have been derived by gradual modification from previously existing forms. This leads to the further conclusion that those organisms possess ing closely Similar structure, which are united as species in a genus, are in reality related to one another. It is also probable that the union of corresponding genera into one familv and of families into higher groups serves to give expression to a real relationship existing between them. Plant functions - Whether plants have many organs, or few organs, or no organs, it should be remembered that they are all at work, and are all doing the same essential things. Although many different kinds of work are being carried on by plants, they may all be put under two heads, nutrition and reproduction. Every plant, whether simple or complex, must care for two things (1) its own support (nutrition), and the production of other plants like. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's Text-Book of Botany When, some few years ago, it became necessary to revise the English Edition of the late Prof. Prantl's Lehrbuch der Botanik, it appeared to me that the requirements of English students would be more satisfactorily met if the scope of the work were so extended that, whilst retaining all that has made it of value to beginners, it might be more useful to those engaged in the advanced study of the science. With this object in view, the number of pages has been doubled by additions to all four parts of the book, but more especially to Part III. Dealing with the Classification of Plants. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginners Botany The value of biology study lies in the work with the actual objects. It is not possible to provide specimens for every point in the work, nor is it always desirable to do so; for the beginning pupil may not be able to interest himself in the objects, and he may become immersed in details before he has arrived at any general view or reason of the subject. Great care must be exercised that the pupil is not swamped. Mere book work or memory stuffing is useless, and it may dwarf or divert the sympathies of active young minds. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary d104-Book of Agricultural Botany My aim in these few pages has been to lay a foundation which may serve to guide the future operations in the Field, and form a basis for intelligent trial and experiment. In these days of competition and struggle for existence every little tells, and the farmer who, understanding, can apply his knowledge, is more likely to succeed, than one who labours without the advantage of this knowledge. It has been my endeavour to use as few technical terms as possible. Botany is often considered a science of names.
