Madell critiques recent discussions of the self for focusing on features which are common to all selves, and which therefore fail to capture the uniqueness of each self. In establishing his own view of personal identity, Madell proposes (a) that there is always a gap between ‘A is f and g’ and ‘I am f and g’; (b), that a complete description of the world offered without recourse to indexicals will fail to account for the contingent truth that I am one of the persons described; and (c), that an account of conscious perspectives on the world must take into account what it means for an apparently arbitrary one of these perspectives to be mine. Engaging with contemporary positions on the first person, embodiment, psychological continuity, and other ongoing arguments, Madell contends that there can be no such thing as a criterion of personal identity through time, that no bodily or psychological continuity approach to the issue can succeed, and that personal identity through time must be absolute, not a matter of degree. Madell’s view that the nature of the self is substantively different from that of objects in the world will generate significant discussion and debate among philosophers of mind.

IMPORTANCE OF 'PRESENT' According to Nisargadatta Maharaj, present has the stamp of reality because I am always now, in the present and what is with me now shares in my reality. The past is in memory, the future in imagination." To know one's real self is bliss, to forget-is sorrow. The real is beyond the mind. Seeing the false as false is meditation. This must go on all the time. Exercise in discrimination between the true and the false and renunciation of the false is meditation. Do not undervalue attention (Dhyana). It means interest and also love. Self-remembrance and self-realization are two aspects of the same state. Self-remembrance is in the mind, self-realization is beyond the mind. The obstacles to clear perception of one's true being are desire for pleasure and fear of pain. It is the pleasure-pain motivation that stands in the way. What is the root of the pain? Ignorance of self. What is the root of desire? The urge to find self. All creation toils for its self and will not rest until it returns to it. Harmlessness is most powerful form of Yoga and it will take you speedily to your goal. This is what I call nisarga yoga, the Natural yoga. It is the art of living in peace and harmony, in friendliness and love. The fruit of it is happiness, uncaused and endless. According to Eckhart Tolle, the author of “The Power of Now”, The greatest difficulty in experiencing reality (or having self awareness) is "the identification with mind”. The incessant mental noise prevents you from finding that realm of inner stillness that is inseparable from being (the self). Thinking has become a disease. Mind is a superb instrument, if used rightly. When it is out of our control, it is a disease. As you go more deeply into this realm of no-mind, you realize the state of pure consciousness in which "you are highly alert and aware but not thinking”. This is the essence of meditation. “NOW” – THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF LIFE Pain is self-created till the unobserved mind runs your life. The greater part of the human pain is avoidable. The pain that you create now is always some form of non-acceptance, some form of unconscious resistance to what is. "Make 'Now' the primary focus of your life. Say yes to life-and see how life suddenly starts working for you rather than against you. This will miraculously transform your whole life." Attaining self-awareness is the objective of life and through meditation one can learn the art of living in the present with full awareness. Present is the most important thing. Yet in Book 2, “Who are you?” has other senses of oneself in mind than the non-sortal “myself”. For example, it might be the pragmatic context, as in a bureaucratic setting; but “Who are you?” or “Who am I?” might be more anguished and be rendered by “What sort of person are you?” or “What sort am I?” Such a question often surfaces in the face of a “limit-situation”, such as one’s death or in the wake of a shameful deed where we are compelled to find our “centers”, what we also will call “Existenz”. “Existenz” here refers to the center of the person. In the face of the limit-situation one is called upon to act unconditionally in the determination of oneself and one’s being in the world. In this Book 2 we discuss chiefly one’s normative personal-moral identity which stands in contrast to the transcendental I where one’s non-sortal unique identity is given from the start. This moral identity requires a unique self-determination and normative self-constitution which may be thought of with the help of the metaphor of “vocation”. We will see that it has especial ties to one’s Existenz as well as to love. This Book 2 claims that the moral-personal ideal sense of who one is is linked to the transcendental who through a notion of entelechy. The person strives to embody the I-ness that one both ineluctably is and which, however, points to who one is not yet and who one ought to be. The final two chapters tell a philosophical-theological likely story of a basic theme of Plotinus: We must learn to honor ourselves because of our honorable kinship and lineage “Yonder”.
