Download or read book A Human Shaped God written by Charles Halton and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Human-Shaped God approaches the humanlike accounts of God in the Old Testament as the starting places for theology and uses them to build a picture of the divine. This understanding of God is then brought into conversation with traditional conceptions that depict God as a being who knows everything that happens, is at every place at the same time, is constant and unchanging, and does not ultimately have material form. But instead of pitting the Old Testament's humanlike view of God against traditional theology and assuming that only one of these understandings is correct, A Human-Shaped God posits that theologians should embrace both of these constructions simultaneously. This is a new way of theological inquiry that embraces both the humanlike characteristics of God and the transcendence of God in traditional theology. By seeing and understanding the humanlike depictions of God in the Old Testament and by using the rich language of traditional theology together in tandem, the reader acquires a much deeper and meaningful understanding of God.
Download or read book The Pleasures of God written by John Piper and published by Multnomah. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Desiring God reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Includes a study guide for individual and small-group use. Isn’t it true—we really don’t know someone until we understand what makes that person happy? And so it is with God! What does bring delight to the happiest Being in the universe? John Piper writes, that it’s only when we know what makes God glad that we’ll know the greatness of His glory. Therefore, we must comprehend “the pleasures of God.” Unlike so much of what is written today, this is not a book about us. It is about the One we were made for—God Himself. In this theological masterpiece—chosen by World Magazine as one of the 20th Century’s top 100 books, John Piper reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Then we will be able to drink deeply—and satisfyingly—from the only well that offers living water. What followers of Jesus need now, more than anything else, is to know and love—behold and embrace—the great, glorious, sovereign, happy God of the Bible. “This is a unique and precious book that everybody should read more than once.” —J.I. PACKER, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia

Download or read book Seeing God Anew Enlarge Your View of HIM written by Hulon Madeley and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written to share many of the now available insights into what our God is really like. The two sources for these insights are clearly identified by Paul in Romans 1:19-20. What God is really like has been revealed to us through the biblical record and by the things he has made. This volume honors both sources of insight. Many insights are drawn from Genesis, Exodus, Daniel, Hebrews, John' Revelations and The Four Gospels; each of these gospels provides us a different perspective on who Jesus really was. John's Revelation provides us the climax of what is now becoming visible to us. The Geological Survey of Israel has compiled a two-volume set entitled Research in Sinai (1967-1980). This excellent work provides us the physical basis for understanding what happened during all the experiences in the Holy Land. This published work was written at the Graduate School level and has been provided in easy to visualize language for today's readers. My background in military matters has provided me with the special insights into land warfare in Old Testament times up to the present. Although John never saw tanks, helicopters, personnel carriers, etc., he described them as they appeared to him in his visions. The literary framework of John's Revelation is that of Apocalyptic Literature. This style is clearly revealed in Daniel's visions. Not understanding this has led to the many conflicting interpretations of John's Revelations. The use of all the currently available sources will provide us with a much more complete view of who Jesus was, is and will forever be. He is the foundation upon which the abundant life of John 10:10 can be built.

Book excerpt: In Shadows, Darkness, and Dawn, daily readings for the season of Lent engage us with the Gospel of John's narratives about Jesus: the temptation in the wilderness, Nicodemus's nighttime visit, the encounter with the woman at the well, Jesus' healing of the man born blind, the raising of Lazrus, and the events of Holy Week. We follow Jesus into the thickening shadows of conflict and rejection, suffering and death. With fresh insights, Tom Steagald takes us to the heart of these stories that reveal not only the shadows surrounding Jesus but those in our world and in our lives. And we hear the good news: in Jesus God has gone ahead of us-has taken up residence in these shadows-because God loves us. Book jacket.
