This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical guidebook, published when the British Raj was at its height, instructs Englishwomen on how to run an efficient household in India. Written by an anonymous longtime resident of the country, this book begins by offering readers instructions on what to bring on the long journey to India. As the voyage took weeks by boat, a specific itinerary is offered: unnecessary items and sundries are discouraged, as are things which would spoil quickly, or that can easily be acquired in Indian marketplaces or stores. We then hear about the various attributes of a good household in India. Topics include acquiring a competent and reliable team of servants; making the home presentable, tidy and well-furnished; and establishing an environment suited to bringing up and educating children. We also hear of how a household must be ready for travel at short notice, such as on colonial business. In the case of rural dwellings, the need for a properly run stable and farmyard is also detailed. The second portion of the book contains hundreds of recipes. Some of these, such as curries and certain meat dishes, are decidedly Indian while others demonstrate how to improvise popular European dishes from ingredients commonly found in the locality. This portion of the text concludes with a series of menus suitable for feeding the entire family in any given month.

Book The Complete Indian Housekeeper and Cook

Download or read book The Complete Indian Housekeeper and Cook written by Flora Annie Steel and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-10-13 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'an Indian household can no more be governed peacefully, without dignity and prestige, than an Indian Empire' InThe Complete Indian Housekeeper and Cook (1888) Flora Annie Steel and her co-author Grace Gardiner provide practical, and often highly opinionated, advice to young memsahibs in India. They explain how to 'make a hold' over servants, how to establish and stock a storeroom, how to plan a menu, manage young children, treat bites from 'mad, or even doubtful dogs', and teach an Indian cook how to make fish quenelles. The Complete Indian Housekeeper and Cook promised its reader a comprehensive guide to domesticitiy in India, even if she found herself living in camps or in the jungle, on the hills or in the plains, whether she was the wife of an influential Indian Civil Servant or a missionary. This new edition, complete with its stimulating introduction and substantial notes, makes available a classic domestic work that in detailing the memsahib's role in the household sheds light on the entire imperial experience. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book Medicine and Colonial Engagements in India and Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Medicine and Colonial Engagements in India and Sub Saharan Africa written by Poonam Bala and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the various modalities of imperial engagements with the colonized peoples in the former British colonies of India and in sub-Saharan Africa. Articulated through race, gender and medicine, these modalities also became colonial sites of desire addressing colonial anxieties ensuing from concerted engagements. Focussing on colonial India, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Swaziland and Zimbabwe, this volume brings together essays from eminent scholars to examine the dynamics of colonial engagements and their implications in understanding their role in the dominant discourses of the empire. Given its transnational perspective in addressing colonial India and Sub-Saharan Africa, the book will appeal to historians, sociologists, and anthropologists, and to scholars and students in colonial studies, cultural studies, history of medicine and world history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an eye to recovering the experiences of those in frontier zones of contact, Savage Worlds maps a wide range of different encounters between Germans and non-European indigenous peoples in the age of high imperialism. Examining outbreaks of radical violence as well as instances of mutual co-operation, it examines the differing goals and experiences of German explorers, settlers, travellers, merchants, and academics, and how the variety of projects they undertook shaped their relationship with the indigenous peoples they encountered. Examining the multifaceted nature of German interactions with indigenous populations, this volume offers historians and anthropologists clear evidence of the complexity of the colonial frontier and frontier zone encounters. It poses the question of how far Germans were able to overcome their initial belief that, in leaving Europe, they were entering ‘savage worlds’.
