Book excerpt: Like Mother Goose, Alice in Wonderland, Grimms', Perrault's and Andersen's Fairy Tales, Max und Moritz, Pinocchio, and Mickey Mouse, Heinrich Hoffmann's Der Struwwelpeter is a world classic of children's literature. Never out of print after its first edition of 1845 and issued by numerous publishers, it has been a bestseller in Germany ever since. While few children in English speaking countries grow up with the book today, "Struwwelpeter" (or "Shock-headed Peter" or "Slovenly Peter") was a very familiar figure in their grandparents' and great-grandparents' nursery. The first English version (of over twenty different ones), titled The English Struwwelpeter, was published in Leipzig in 1848. Although not a very close translation, it has remained by far the most popular and still has great appeal today. It is this version with its particular nineteenth century charm which we reissue here exactly 160 years after its first publication. The German original is found in the appendix

Book excerpt: The Gingerbreadman: Psychopath, sadist, genius, convicted murderer and biscuit is loose in the streets of Reading. It isn't Jack Spratt's case. He and Mary Mary have been reassigned due to falling levels of nursery crime, and The NCD is once more in jeopardy. That is, until a chance encounter during the Armitage Shanks literary awards at the oddly familiar Deja-Vu Club lead Jack and Mary on the hunt for missing journalist Henrietta 'Goldilocks' Hatchett, star reporter for The Daily Toad. She had been about to break a story involving unexplained explosions in Herefordshire, Pasadena and the Nullabor Plain; The last witnesses to see her alive were The Three Bears, comfortably living out a life of rural solitude in Andersen's wood. But all is not what it seems. How could the bear's porridge be at such disparate temperatures when they were poured at the same time? Was Goldy's death in the nearby 1st World War themepark of Sommeworld a freak accident? And is it merely chance that the Gingerbreadman pops up at awkward moments? But there's more. What does a missing scientist with a terrifying discovery in subatomic physics, a secret weapon of devastating power, a reclusive industrialist known only as the Quangle Wangle and Colonel Danvers of the National Security all have in common?

Der Badeort Salzloch ABOUT THE AUTHOR : Heinrich Hoffmann was a German psychiatrist, who also wrote some short works including Der Struwwelpeter (German for either "slovenly Peter" or "shock-haired Peter"), an illustrated book portraying children misbehaving. He wrote under the following names: - Polykarpus Gastfenger (The given name is the German version of that of a Christian martyr; the surname sounds like "Gastfänger", which could be a common noun for "guest-catcher".) - Heulalius von Heulenburg - Heinrich Hoffmann - Heinrich Hoffmann-Donner (The second half of the compound surname would mean "thunder" as a common noun, or a name for the Germanic thunder-god Thor.) - Heinrich Kinderlieb (The surname means roughly "love of children") - Reimerich Kinderlieb - Peter Struwwel (This name reverses the order of the components of "Struwwelpeter".) - Zwiebel (As a common noun, this would mean "onion") In Frankfurt/Germany there is a Heinrich-Hoffmann-Museum Frankfurt. Hoffmann studied medicine in Heidelberg. From 1851, he was director of the municipal psychiatry in Frankfurt. He is the subject of the historical novel, 98 Reasons for Being.
