Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Currency and Banking System of England: And the Sister Kingdoms The merit of the Scotch system is, that in con sequence of the laws of property it affords a much superior security from the individual estates of the partners, beyond the bank capital, to that which the law of England does but in Scotland also the evil distinction betwixt subscribed and paid up capital has obtained in the constitution of some of its banking establishments; and it is at present proposed that a large and apparently sufficient capital should not only be subscribed. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Bank of England and Its Financial Services to the State But though the Bank Of England was at its origin rather an incident Of State finance than the foundation Of a national banking system, its services to the State were very narrowly restricted by statute. It is curious to note that those exchequer functions which it afterwards under took, and Whose gradual assumption it is the principal Object of this book to trace, are not even referred to in the original act and charter. The fact is that the Bank Of England, like most really English institutions, was case made; it owed its form and functions not to systematic planning, but to attempts to meet emergencies as they from time to time arose. Thus the running cash note, which afterwards became the most effective banking instru ment Of the English bank, was an evasion, even if not (as Often alleged) a positive infraction of its charter. The Charter only contemplated an issue Of sealed bills, strictly limited in amount to the capital subscribed. If this was SO with its banking methods, it was equally the case with its relations to the Exchequer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Schemes relating to the Isthmus of Darien (or Panama), that narrow little strip of land which unites the two Americas, have proved fruitful in disaster. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crisis the Currency: With a Comparison Between the English Scotch Systems of Banking The critical position into which a combination of disturbing influences has thrown our whole monetary and commercial system, must have led all men, of thoughtful habits, to some investigation of the causes which have brought about a state of things, almost without example in this country, accustomed, as we unfortunately are, to periodical commercial crises. It is, perhaps, this very experience of former monetary crises which prevents the great mass of the public from very carefully inquiring into the nature and extent of our present embarrassments, or perceiving the danger which is still impending over us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Manual of Banking The following pages are the result of a revision and enlargement of a small book on banking and kindred subjects which was published in 1866 under the title of 'Banking Currency and the Exchanges.' Exceedingly imperfect as that little work was in many respects the public absorbed nearly one thousand copies, and that satisfactory result, all things considered, has been we think due almost entirely to the fact that it was a book about banks and banking, written after going over the ground and ascertaining by years of experience among bankers what the uninitiated wanted to know on the subject While distinctly repudiating the smallest intention to disparage the meritorious and useful works on banking which many writers, having little besides theoretical knowledge to guide them, have published, we cannot refrain from remarking that it is impossible for writers thus equipped for the work to produce books on banking or any other science which shall be anything better than a partially safe and sound guide. Download or read book Money and Banking Classic Reprint written by John Thom Holdsworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money and Banking The treatment of Money in Part I follows in a general way the lines made familiar by other standard works to which frequent references are made in the footnotes and m the suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter. The efiort has been made to compress this part of the book into the smallest space consistent with a presentation of essentials in the history, theory and principles of money, leaving the major part of the book for the discussion of the principles and practices of banking. In the chapters devoted to banking organization and practice it has been impossible to give consideration to the varying local cus toms and practices of different types of banking institutions. The aim has been to describe those principles and practices of commercial banking that are common to all banks. Though the new Federal reserve system introduces far reaching changes in our banking and currency system, many years must elapse before its full effects can be definitely measured. Throughout Part II frequent reference is made to various provisions of the Act of 1913, and Chapter XXII is devoted to an analysis of its leading provisions, and a summary of the steps taken in the establishment of the new system. A proper understanding of the new system, how ever, can be gained only by following its Operations and marking the effect of changes that will certainly be made in the law from time to time. Book The Financial System of the United Kingdom Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Financial System of the United Kingdom Classic Reprint written by Henry Higgs and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Financial System of the United Kingdom This volume was prepared at the suggestion of the late Sir Edward Hamilton, who had in vain cherished during a lifetime in the Treasury the project of publishing a connected account of our financial procedure, which he believed to be much needed by members of Parliament, by Government Departments, and by the public at large. Want of leisure compelled him to defer the execution of his plan until his retirement from the service, when he hoped to treat the subject with greater freedom of comment and criticism than were permissible in an active official. But on his retirement his health was too broken for the task for which he was so exceptionally qualified. In attempting to observe his wishes I have limited myself, so far as possible, to describing things as they are here and now, not as they have been, as they might be, or as they are in other countries. All that is offered is a summary exposition of our financial system, its organisation, methods, and forms of procedure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Banking as a Public Service My main purpose in addressing you is to urge - not merely because modern democracy is sure to demand it but because from any point of consideration it is the wisest course - that we bankers in the study of whatever reforms are necessary in the respective systems under which we work, think of our business as a more or less public service for the conduct of which we are somewhat responsible to the community in which we live as well as to our share holders. Oddly enough while I was preparing this paper I found the following from the introduction by Prof. Foxwell to the English edition of Prof. Andreades' History of the Bank of England. Prof. Foxwell had in mind banks of national importance, but the text will apply in some sense to all of us and with it I will close. For this reason the Government of the United States should not enter the discount and deposit business Of banking; but, on the other hand, it should supervise and regulate a cooperative means Of assistance, like an enlarged clearing-house association, in the common interest, and require the banks to pay all the cost Of providing capital, supplying gold reserves, and issuing notes under its close supervision. Thus the surplus profits of note-issues and Of discounts would go to the people of the United States. Moreover, in any legislation, care should be taken that control Of our credit system should not pass into the hands Of any sinister political or financial interests.
