The contents of this work were collected by my father, the late Dr. Henry M. Dexter. To this task he devoted much of his time for many years. Of Pilgrim descent and born almost within sight of Plymouth Rock, he desired to give to the world a more complete record than any which had been written of the religious and ecclesiastical movement in England that made the Pilgrims what they were, and of their emigration to Holland and their life there before they came to America. But he died in 1890, leaving his chosen task unaccomplished. In his first rough draft he had written five long chapters which appear in these pages as the first five books and a part Iof the sixth. But they were hardly more than rudely shaped masses of crude material, as he had not reached that work of revision which no one else was more competent than he to per form. By his will the manuscript passed at his death into the hands of Prof. Franklin B. Dexter, Litt. D., of Yale University, and myself. Professor Dexter completed the author's last chap ter, or book, and I have rewritten and edited the whole, adding considerable material obtained by my own researches. Mathew Stevens, a youth born at St. Augustine of Spanish and French parents, had been abducted and carried to England, in the year 1586, by Sir Francis Drake, and was there pur chased by Mr. John Robinson, who had compas sion on the child, and brought him up in the fear of the Lord. Thus Mathew Stevens (mattheo Estevan), though born of a Catholic father, became an English Puritan. By transferring the Estevan family from Florida to England, they are changed from Spanish to English, without breaking the lineal descent from the first youth who sailed with Columbus to Mathew Stevens the young Puritan. His romantic adventures and singular love affair form the chief groundwork for this story. In order that the reader may have a better idea of the Pilgrims and their peculiar persecutions, the story Opens with their flight into Holland. Just a glimpse of their life in Leyden is given, and they are hastened on board the Mayflower, where will be found as full and accurate an account of their memorable voyage as can be given without weary ing one with useless detail. Though the Pilgrims and the colony of. While I was unable to find much new evidence of prime importance, I have perhaps been able to exclude from further consideration the possibility of ascertaining information about the Pilgrims from the evidence concerning the Puritan Movement in England from 1580 to 1610, and from that regarding the history of the Established Church for the same period. But I have been able to place the older material about the Pilgrims in its relation to the more recent evidence concerning English church history, and have as well utilized for the first time the Plymouth First Church records and many Plymouth wills, which contain much of great value on economic and social history. No further accession of evidence is now probable and it is therefore an important fact, though due to no merit of mine, that the narrative presented in these pages possesses a certain aspect of finality. A new study of old evidence and the use of some new material has made possible certain differences in interpretation, in emphasis, and in judgment, the importance of which must not be unduly exaggerated. I have felt it possible to show that the Pilgrims were not subject to active persecution in England from Church or State; that Robinson's Congregation at Leyden was considerably smaller than most students have estimated; and that the really significant achievement was not the emigration itself, but the economic success of the years 1621 to 1627.
