Book The Energy Question Volume One The World

Download or read book The Energy Question Volume One The World written by Edward W. Erickson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1974-12-15 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called energy crisis that burst upon the world in 1973 was not easily understood by many people. It was neither 'the beginning of the end' nor the first encounter by modern man with the natural result of his prodigality. These papers, collected in two volumes, from energy economists in the United States, Canada, and Britain all indicate that the 'crisis' was and is a short-run problem caused by government action or inaction. The problem may be complex, but it was mishandled, particularly by the United States, in terms of government policy. The rise in the price of, and the embargo on, oil came into being because of a successful producers' cartel outside North America; oil buyers -- nations and companies -- did not respond in kind but scurried around the world in separate planes in order to ensure supplies for themselves at any price. That price became many times the cost-of-production price, despite the fact that cool analysis reveals an increase in both production and reserves in most areas of the world. The shortage of refined oil products for consumers are attributable partly to the embargo, but also to a shortage of refineries and bottlenecks in transportation -- some of which have been induced by government uncertainties over recent years. Proper government policies are now required. The thirty-six papers in the two books treat a multitude of topics related to the question of energy as seen from the stance of the economist. All sources of energy are considered, as are the markets in major areas of the world; past policies are analysed, and future policies recommended. It is hoped that the volumes, giving the background to the energy problems of the immediate future and a menu of prescriptions for their solution, will interest businessmen, market analysts, and policy-makers as well as economists, teaching or learning, in many parts of the world.

Book A Question of Power

Download or read book A Question of Power written by Robert Bryce and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An acclaimed author and celebrated journalist breaks down the history of electricity and the impact of global energy use on the world and the environment. Global demand for power is doubling every two decades, but electricity remains one of the most difficult forms of energy to supply and do so reliably. Today, some three billion people live in places where per-capita electricity use is less than what's used by an average American refrigerator. How we close the colossal gap between the electricity rich and the electricity poor will determine our success in addressing issues like women's rights, inequality, and climate change. In A Question of Power, veteran journalist Robert Bryce tells the human story of electricity, the world's most important form of energy. Through onsite reporting from India, Iceland, Lebanon, Puerto Rico, New York, and Colorado, he shows how our cities, our money--our very lives--depend on reliable flows of electricity. He highlights the factors needed for successful electrification and explains why so many people are still stuck in the dark. With vivid writing and incisive analysis, he powerfully debunks the notion that our energy needs can be met solely with renewables and demonstrates why--if we are serious about addressing climate change--nuclear energy must play a much bigger role. Electricity has fueled a new epoch in the history of civilization. A Question of Power explains how that happened and what it means for our future.

Book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster

Download or read book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster written by Bill Gates and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe. Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet's slide to certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal. He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions—suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.

Book Fact and Fiction in Global Energy Policy

Download or read book Fact and Fiction in Global Energy Policy written by Benjamin K. Sovacool and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A balanced examination of global energy issues. Energy sustainability and climate change are two of the greatest challenges facing humankind. Unraveling these complex and interconnected issues demands careful and objective assessment. Fact and Fiction in Global Energy Policy aims to change the prevailing discourse by examining fifteen core energy questions from a variety of perspectives, demonstrating how, for each of them, no clear-cut answer exists. Is industry the chief energy villain? Can we sustainably feed and fuel the planet at the same time? Is nuclear energy worth the risk? Should geoengineering be outlawed? Touching on pollution, climate mitigation and adaptation, energy efficiency, government intervention, and energy security, the authors explore interrelated concepts of law, philosophy, ethics, technology, economics, psychology, sociology, and public policy. This book offers a much-needed critical appraisal of the central energy technology and policy dilemmas of our time and the impact of these on multiple stakeholders.

Book A Question of Balance

  • Author : William Nordhaus
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2014-10-01
  • ISBN : 0300209398

Download or read book A Question of Balance written by William Nordhaus and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How economic analysis can help us design economic policies to address the looming challenges of global warming As scientific and observational evidence on global warming piles up every day, questions of economic policy in this central environmental topic have taken center stage. But as author and prominent Yale economist William Nordhaus observes, the issues involved in understanding global warming and slowing its harmful effects are complex and cross disciplinary boundaries. For example, ecologists see global warming as a threat to ecosystems, utilities as a debit to their balance sheets, and farmers as a hazard to their livelihoods. In this important work, William Nordhaus integrates the entire spectrum of economic and scientific research to weigh the costs of reducing emissions against the benefits of reducing the long-run damages from global warming. The book offers one of the most extensive analyses of the economic and environmental dynamics of greenhouse-gas emissions and climate change and provides the tools to evaluate alternative approaches to slowing global warming. The author emphasizes the need to establish effective mechanisms, such as carbon taxes, to harness markets and harmonize the efforts of different countries. This book not only will shape discussion of one the world's most pressing problems but will provide the rationales and methods for achieving widespread agreement on our next best move in alleviating global warming.

Book Buffy Season 10 Library Edition Volume 1

Download or read book Buffy Season 10 Library Edition Volume 1 written by Joss Whedon and published by Dark Horse Comics. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cult-favorite television series from creator Joss Whedon continues in comics with Season 10, where Buffy and the Scoobies are rewriting the rules of magic and monsters . . . This oversized Library Edition collects the materials from Buffy Season 10 Volume 1 and Volume 2 softcovers, along with all the comic book covers, and an expanded sketchbook section. While slaying the zompires that have overrun a small California town, Buffy and her pals are shocked to discover another new kind of vampire: harder to kill, able to transform, and walk in the light of day--like Dracula . . . If that weren't enough, the rules of magic are literally being rewritten in the Vampyr book. The crew attempts to restore the status quo, all while Xander is the victim of a haunting, his relationship with Dawn begins to crumble, and Dracula himself enters the picture. Then when the Vampyr book goes missing--now a highly coveted item--Buffy and the Scoobies head for what might be a disaster in Sunnydale where Andrew is up to his good/bad/old tricks again. As everyone feels the responsibility of protecting the book and writing the new magical rules, they are tempted by what new rules can do for them . . . just like the Big Bads who have come knocking on Buffy's door! Writers Christos Gage (Angel & Faith) and Buffy star Nicholas Brendon team with artist Rebekah Isaacs (Angel & Faith) to take on the Slayer and her teammates in her tenth season; they're joined by guest artists Richard Corben (Hellboy), Karl Moline (Fray), and Cliff Richards (Dollhouse).
