Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Caxton Press Although the Pacific Northwest was the area furthest removed from the actual battles of the Civil War, it was nonetheless profoundly affected by the war. The Enemy Never Came examines the everyday lives of the volunteer soldiers who battled Native American renegades of the region and of the settlers who were deeply affected by the war yet unable to do much about it. Pacific Northwest pioneers soon chose sides, most allying with the North, others supporting the southern states’ right to withdraw from the union. Still others attempted to ignore the entire issue of the War between the States, leaving “that problem” to the folks back east. Because communication with the rest of the nation was slow and tenuous during the early years of the war, the early settlers of what are now Oregon, Washington, and Idaho concentrated on controlling the restive Native Americans whose land and society had been overwhelmed by white settlers. These same settlers, however, nonetheless vigorously argued politics and worried about invaders from the south, from the British colonies to the north, and from the sea—none of whom ever materialized.

Book Brief Encounters with the Enemy

Download or read book Brief Encounters with the Enemy written by Saïd Sayrafiezadeh and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2013 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An unnamed American city feeling the effects of a war waged far away and suffering from bad weather is the backdrop for this startling work of fiction. The protagonists are aimless young men going from one blue collar job to the next, or in a few cases, aspiring to middle management. Their everyday struggles--with women, with the morning commute, with a series of cruel bosses--are somehow transformed into storytelling that is both universally resonant and wonderfully uncanny. That is the unsettling, funny, and ultimately heartfelt originality of Saïd Sayrafiezadeh's short fiction, to be at home in a world not quite our own but with many, many lessons to offer us"--

Ansky depicts scenes of devastation - convoys of refugees, towns looted and burned to the ground, villagers taken hostage and raped, prey to all comers. Book Playing with the Enemy

Download or read book Playing with the Enemy written by Gary W. Moore and published by Savas Beatie. This book was released on 2006-09-15 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir of fathers and sons, baseball, a world at war, and second chances. “I loved [it]. You will, too” (Jim Morris, author of The Oldest Rookie). Gene Moore was a small-town Illinois farm boy whose passion for “America’s Pastime” made him a local legend. It wasn’t long before word spread, and the Brooklyn Dodgers came calling on the teenage phenom who could hit a ball a country mile. Headed for stardom, and his dream within reach, Gene’s future in the majors was cut short by World War II. In 1944, after joining the US Navy, Gene found himself on a top-secret mission: guarding German sailors captured from U-505, a submarine carrying one of the infamous Enigma decoders. Stuck with guard duty, he decided to bide the time by doing what he loved. Gene taught the POWs how to play baseball. It was a decision that would change Gene’s life forever. The story of a remarkable man told by his inspired son, “Gene’s journey from promise to despair and back again, set against a long war and an even longer post-war recovery . . . [is] a 20th-century epic that demonstrates how, sometimes, letting go of a dream is the only way to discover one’s great fortune” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Book Enemy in My Bed

Download or read book Enemy in My Bed written by Dorothy Dore Dowlen and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wedding night in Manila was full of promise and Dorothy Dore was prepared to give herself completely to the charming American soldier in the blue uniform. Surely, he stood for duty, honor, and country, just as her father had. However, Sergeant K had a dark secret, which came to the light in a brutal honeymoon attack on her. He promised it would never happen again... "Enemy in My Bed: Triumphs of a Military War Bride" is a tribute to foreign war brides, like Dorothy, who have suffered in silence for the sake of loyalty to their vows and fear of being deported. The author believes that women continue to bear the burdens of abuse caused by addictions and mental disorders because no one is willing to speak up and offer a way out. She knows because she lived it; she escaped it, and survived to tell it all. Dorothy Dore Dowlen immigrated to the United States in 1951 and now resides in San Jose, CA. She is a much sought-after speaker for civic and veterans group functions. Dowlen's first book, Enduring What Cannot Be Endured, published by McFarland Co. Inc. in 2001, is the moving memoir of her WWII years as a teenager on the run from the Japanese and as a medical aide in the jungles of Mindanao, Philippines.
