Book excerpt: A Telegraph Book of the Year A remarkable, unprecedented account of the role of magic in cultures both ancient and modern -- from the first known horoscope to the power of tattoos. 'Fascinating, original, excellent' Simon Sebag Montefiore ______________________ Three great strands of practice and belief run through human history: science, religion and magic. But magic - the idea that we have a connection with the universe - has developed a bad reputation. It has been with us for millennia - from the curses and charms of ancient Greek, Roman and Jewish magic, to the shamanistic traditions of Eurasia, indigenous America and Africa, and even quantum physics today. Even today seventy-five per cent of the Western world holds some belief in magic, whether snapping wishbones, buying lottery tickets or giving names to inanimate objects. Drawing on his decades of research, with incredible breadth and authority, Professor Chris Gosden provides a timely history of human thought and the role it has played in shaping civilization, and how we might use magic to rethink our understanding of the world. ______________________ 'This is an extraordinary work of learning, written with an exhilarating lightness of touch . . . It is essential reading.' Francis Pryor, author of Britain BC, Britain AD and The Fens 'Without an unfascinating page' Scotsman 'Chris Gosden shows how magic explores the connections between human beings and the universe in ways different from religion or science, yet deserving of respect' Professor John Barton, author of A History of The Bible

Book On Becoming an Alchemist

Download or read book On Becoming an Alchemist written by Catherine MacCoun and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2008-12-23 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An enchanting, engaging, and insightful” guide on how to use modern alchemy to develop intuition, cultivate self-knowledge—and apply real magic to life's challenges (Caroline Myss, author of Entering the Castle) Many regard alchemy as a metaphor for inner transformation. But this is only half the story. According to Catherine MacCoun, alchemy is no mere metaphor. It’s real magic. Transforming the inner world is, for the alchemist, a way to transform the outer world. Through studying the principles of alchemy, we can achieve extraordinary effects from ordinary actions by understanding how the world really works. We can perceive the hidden connections between the spiritual and the material worlds. Knowledge of these connections enables us to influence external phenomena through the powers of heart and mind alone. Yet alchemy is not, like some forms of magic, the exercise of mind over matter. It is the art of taking what already exists—whatever presents itself—and transmuting the harmful into the helpful, the useless into the valuable. On Becoming an Alchemist initiates us into these secrets, showing us how to think, perceive, and operate as an alchemist. It offers practical advice and exercises that will help the modern magician to: ● Understand and apply basic principles of alchemy ● Transmute setbacks, failures, and losses into sources of magical power ● Navigate one’s inner world with poise, confidence, and common sense ● Intuitively show up in the right place at the right time to benefit from magical coincidences ● Discover the potentials latent in any situation by awakening subtle perception

Book Encyclopedia of Occult Scienses vol VII Alchemy And High Magic

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Occult Scienses vol VII Alchemy And High Magic written by Poinsot, Maffeo and published by Aegitas. This book was released on 2015-10-07 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It follows from this phenomenon (tested hundreds of times) that every thing may carry around it an invisibly written history. The same thing applies to the human being. Every one of us carries around him a radiance invisible to the human eye, but perceptible to the trained mind. Inscribed in this radiance in the shape of pictures are the most important results of our thoughts and our actions. In accordance with Tradition this radiance is termed the aura, and there is an aura for every principle. Thus there will be an aura of the physical body, of very small extent, an aura of the astral body, an aura of the mind. It is this last which was recognised by religious tradition surrounding the heads of saints and divinities with halos. It is thanks to this radiance of the three principles of the human being that we can explain many seemingly strange phenomena, such as sudden sympathies or antipathies, intuitions, and so-called unconscious previsions, etc. Clairvoyance is also produced, as we have said, by means of a special magnetised condenser of the astral plane termed the Magic Mirror, of which our author speaks in connection with the Arsenal of Magic, just, as he speaks of the visions seen in coffee grounds in the chapter dealing with divinations of the second degree. And I quite understand the reserve which he shews here ; but perhaps he ought to have dealt separately at least with the psychometry which has been tested by experiments. Our author, it is felt, gives but a limited belief to these divinations of the second degree. Yet he describes conscientiously, not the hundreds of ancient methods which are nearly forgotten, but those of the Kabbala (such as onomancy, taromancy) and also the oracles, the prophecies which prove that the secret influences of this radiance govern many of our states of mind.

Book Alchemy

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. J. Holmyard
  • Publisher : Courier Corporation
  • Release : 2012-04-26
  • ISBN : 048615114X
  • Pages : 335 pages

Download or read book Alchemy written by E. J. Holmyard and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alchemy is thought to have originated over 2000 years ago in Hellenic Egypt, the result of three converging streams: Greek philosophy, Egyptian technology and the mysticism of Middle Eastern religions. Its heyday was from about 800 A.D. to the middle of the seventeenth century, and its practitioners ranged from kings, popes, and emperors to minor clergy, parish clerks, smiths, dyers, and tinkers. Even such accomplished men as Roger Bacon, Thomas Aquinas, Sir Thomas Browne and Isaac Newton took an interest in alchemical matters. In its search for the "Philosopher's Stone" that would transmute base metals into silver and gold, alchemy took on many philosophical, religious and mystical overtones. These and many other facets of alchemy are explored with enormous insight and erudition in this classic work. E. J. Holmyard, a noted scholar in the field, begins with the alchemists of ancient Greece and China and goes on to discuss alchemical apparatus, Islamic and early Western alchemy; signs, symbols, and secret terms; Paracelsus; English, Scottish and French alchemists; Helvetius, Price, and Semler, and much more. Ranging over two millennia of alchemical history, Mr. Holmyard shows how, like astrology and witchcraft, alchemy was an integral part of the pre-scientific moral order, arousing the cupidity of princes, the blind fear of mobs and the intellectual curiosity of learned men. Eventually, however, with the advent and ascension of the scientific method, the hopes and ideas of the alchemists faded to the status of "pseudo-science." That transformation, as well as alchemy's undeniable role as a precursor of modern chemistry, are brilliantly illuminated in this book. Students of alchemy, chemistry, the history of science, and the occult, plus anyone interested in the origin and evolution of one of mankind's most enduring and influential myths, will want to have a copy of this masterly study.
