Book The Emperor on the Battlefield Napoleon s Worth as a Military Commander

Download or read book The Emperor on the Battlefield Napoleon s Worth as a Military Commander written by Felix Christoph Lotzin and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to explore two working hypotheses: Firstly, that Napoleon’s alleged military superiority in terms of skill and battlefield competence over his peers can be empirically quantified and proven. Secondly, that the results of Napoleonic warfare can be predicted by applying the theory of Contest Success Functions to these battles. To address these claims this book is organized into four sections: Theory: The first of the conceptual sections summarizes the theoretical underpinning behind the economical understanding of conflict. This so called ‘second approach’ and its merits are outlined and the history of these theoretical concepts is explained. Chapter three introduces the Ratio Contest Success Function (RCSF) put forth by Tullock and the Difference Contest Success Function (DCSF) employed by Hirshleifer, the concepts for predicting probabilities of success in conflict theory. History: The fourth chapter gives a brief report on warfare during the Napoleonic ages. A special emphasis lies on an analysis that evaluates if the key parameters have been homogenous over the time and what kind of technology was employed during these battles. The results are then compared with the demands of conflict theory. The fifth chapter then explicates the data set. The different variables that could be obtained are introduced and at last the scope of the further analysis is specified. This is done by picking the variables that can actually be used for an in-depth quantitative. Modelling: In the four chapters that deal with the actual modelling, the theory is applied to the historical data to yield the results we need to verify the working hypotheses. After the two different estimators used have been introduced in chapter six, the chapters seven and eight deal with utilising each of the estimators to answer these questions. The results from the estimates are interpreted and are compared in chapter nine. In addition, chapter nine attempts to weigh the explanatory value of the two approaches and places them in the historical perspective. Résumé: Chapter ten answers comments on Napoleon’s personal worth on the battlefield and applies the findings of the empirical work to three short case studies. The subsequent summary then merges the results of the whole study and concludes with follow-up questions for future research.

Book excerpt: A leading expert examines one of Napoleon's most decisive but least analysed victories In early July 1809 Napoleon crossed the Danube with 187,000 men to confront the Austrian Archduke Charles and an army of 145,000 men. The fighting that followed dwarfed in intensity and scale any previous Napoleonic battlefield, perhaps any in history: casualties on each side were over 30,000. The Austrians fought with great determination, but eventually the Emperor won a narrow victory. Wagram was decisive in that it compelled Austria to make peace. It also heralded a new, altogether greater order of warfare, anticipating the massed manpower and weight of fire deployed much later in the battles of the American Civil War and then at Verdun and on the Somme.

Book excerpt: Napoleon Bonaparte's ascent to power was meteoric. Ever the outsider and regarded by many as an upstart, his extraordinary determination, courage, and tactical skill saw him rise from ordinary beginnings to become the greatest military commander of his age. A brigadier general by the age of 24, crowned Emperor of France by age 35, he had conquered most of the countries of Europe by the time he was 45. Napoleon's maxims for conduct on the battlefield gives a fascinating insight into his knowledge, intuition, and resourcefulness. His ideas have shaped the opinion of generations of military strategists, politicians, and business entrepreneurs, and are still relevant today. The translation, by British army officer Colonel George D'Aguilar, contains notes exploring the background to Napoleon's theories of war and the leaders who inspired him. This edition also contains an historical introduction by Frederick C. Schneid, Professor of History at High Point University, North Carolina.

Book Military Career of Napoleon the Great

Download or read book Military Career of Napoleon the Great written by Montgomery Gibbs and published by . This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the closing chapters of this volume were being written, a "Napoleonic wave" seemed to be passing over the country, an echo, no doubt, of the furore which Napoleon's name has excited in France during the past three years. There has never been a time, during the last fifty years at least, when the public was not eager to learn something new concerning the wonderful career of the man who once held all Europe prisoner in the folds of the French flag. The world regards Napoleon Bonaparte as a military genius at least, whatever it may think of the political or social side of his life, and its relation to France. The writer does not believe that they are inseparably connected, and in offering this work it is his desire to better acquaint the admirers, as well as the enemies of the "Little Corporal," with his military career, not technically, but to picture him as his marshals, generals and soldiers knew him on the battlefield and around the campfire. Many of these famous marshals and generals, who shared day by day all the glories and perils of their chief, and who vied with him in their activity and daring, have lately given to the world their "Memoirs," published many years after their death, for obvious reasons. From them one gets a much clearer insight into the true characteristics of their heroic leader. Being men of slight education their writings are confined largely to the gossip of the campaigns in which they were active participants, and in reading them one is often tempted to believe that Napoleon was in command of both belligerent armies, so accurately did this giant among warriors forecast the movements of the enemy on the battlefield; and after victory had favored his bold strokes, finding himself in a position to reshape, at will, the map of Europe; for he conducted his campaigns with a degree of skill which, it is conceded by all military authorities, has never been excelled. No man ever understood how to excite emulation, by distributing praise or blame, as did Napoleon. Chaboulon well says that the ascendancy possessed by the Emperor over the minds and courage of the soldiery was truly incomprehensible. A word, a gesture, was sufficient to inspire them with enthusiasm, and make them face the most terrible ordeals. If ordered to rush to a point, although the extreme danger of the manoeuvre might at first strike the good sense of the soldiers, they immediately reflected that their general would not have issued such a command without a motive, or have exposed them wantonly. "He knows what he is about," they would say, and immediately rush on to death, uttering shouts of "Long live the Emperor!"No attempt is here made to give a history of France from the time Bonaparte first made his entrance into the drama of which he was so soon to be the leading actor. This, then, is the story of the man who personally commanded in 600 skirmishes, and 85 pitched battles, resigning at last his leadership on the field of Waterloo, a victim of treachery and incompetency exceeding even his own well-grounded fears; but even after these years of constant warfare and conquest, after maintaining huge armies in almost all parts of the world, he left France the richest nation in the universe, and in possession of a larger amount of specie than the rest of Europe; and notwithstanding the fact that in 1796, when he was given command of the Army of Italy, he found his government not only incapable of paying its ragged and weary troops, but unable, even, to feed them!

Book The Military Maxims of Napoleon

Download or read book The Military Maxims of Napoleon written by William E. Cairnes and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential volume of Napoleon’s wisdom on the art of war. Nearly two hundred years after his death, Napoleon remains widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders of all time. Here, in one volume, is the essence of Napoleon’s knowledge and wisdom, the fruit of his practical experience, and his study of the great empire-builders from Alexander to Frederick the Great. Working from the best among previous editions of Napoleon’s maxims, including the work produced in 1901 by William E. Cairnes, noted Napoleonic historian David G. Chandler has contributed commentary that examines Napoleon’s work from the twentieth-century perspective of the two world wars, Vietnam, and other conflicts, and analyzes the ways in which commanders have observed or failed to observe Napoleon’s teachings. The Military Maxims of Napoleon is a unique collection of tenets on the art of war. They reveal the principles on which his military, diplomatic, and political triumphs were built. Now every military student and enthusiast can benefit from the brilliance of Napoleonic insight and wisdom. “The Military Maxims of Napoleon provides a most valuable insight into the Napoleonic art of war . . . David G. Chandler is the foremost modern authority on the subject, which makes this work essential reading.” —Philip J. Book Napoleon as Military Commander

Download or read book Napoleon as Military Commander written by James Marshall-Cornwall and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether as a general or a statesman, the two decades of Napoleon's maturity, from the triumphant invasion of Italy to the final defeat at Waterloo, were years of extraordinary achievement. Almost as remarkable as the victories were the disasters at Trafalgar, in the Iberian Peninsula, in Russia and at Leipzig which the Imperial forces survived. James Marshall-Cornwall here analyzes Napoleon as military commander. Since, however, strategy and statecraft were as closely intertwined in Napoleon's career as in that of Oliver Cromwell, it is impossible to consider his generalship in complete isolation.

Book Blundering to Glory

Download or read book Blundering to Glory written by Owen Connelly and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2006 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned for its accuracy, brevity, and readability, this book has long been the gold standard of concise histories of the Napoleonic Wars. Now in an updated and revised edition, it is unique in its portrayal of one of the world's great generals as a scrambler who never had a plan, strategic or tactical, that did not break down or change of necessity in the field. Distinguished historian Owen Connelly argues that Napoleon was the master of the broken play, so confident of his ability to improvise, cover his own mistakes, and capitalize on those of the enemy that he repeatedly plunged his armies into uncertain, seemingly desperate situations, only to emerge victorious as he "blundered" to glory. Beginning with a sketch of Napoleon's early life, the book progresses to his command of artillery at Toulon and the "whiff of grapeshot" in Paris that netted him control of the Army of Italy, where his incredible performance catapulted him to fame. The author vividly traces Napoleon's campaigns as a general of the French Revolution and emperor of the French, knowledgeably analyzing each battle's successes and failures. The author depicts Napoleon's "art of war" as a system of engaging the enemy, waiting for him to make a mistake, improvising a plan on the spot-and winning. Far from detracting from Bonaparte's reputation, his blunders rather made him a great general, a "natural" who depended on his intuition and ability to read battlefields and his enemy to win. Exploring this neglected aspect of Napoleon's battlefield genius, Connelly at the same time offers stirring and complete accounts of all the Napoleonic campaigns.

Book The Duke and the Emperor

Download or read book The Duke and the Emperor written by John Strawson and published by Constable & Robinson. This book was released on 1994 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Asked who was the greatest general of his day, Wellington replied: 'In this age, in past ages, in any age, Napoleon'. But admiration was not mutual. On the eve of Waterloo, Napoleon said of his rival: 'C'est un mauvais general'." "Napoleon's underestimation of Wellington is one of the undercurrents to General Strawson's brilliant narrative as he presents us with a dual portrait of two great military geniuses. Considerable attention however is also paid to their amorous exploits as an illustration of character. For twenty years or so, the destinies of Europe were dominated by the military and political ambitions of Napoleon Bonaparte. Exploiting the violent upheavals and patriotic ardour of Revolutionary France, Napoleon defeated the armies of Austria, Prussia and Russia time after time. Only England and the Royal Navy stood between him and absolute world power. England's defiance was personified by Pitt and Nelson and later by a rejuvenated British Army under Wellington." "Wellington and Napoleon were exact contemporaries, born in the same year. While Napoleon played for colossal stakes and soared like an eagle - his own symbol - to unimaginable heights, only to plunge to nothingness when he was forty-six, Wellington, the archetypal English gentleman, soldier, statesman, diplomatist, went on and on from Commander-in-Chief to Prime Minister, to Pillar of State and major domo of England." "The two men met but once on the field of battle and then between them they determined the fate of Europe. In an original and extremely perceptive analysis of their respective careers, General Strawson tells us which of them played the greater part in history."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
