Book The Lesser Bushbaby Galago as an Animal Model Selected Topics

Download or read book The Lesser Bushbaby Galago as an Animal Model Selected Topics written by Duane E. Haines and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not the goal of the present volume to promote Galago as an animal model, but to alert investigators to the potential thereof. In this respect, this collection of papers serves as a general introduction. The subjects covered are purposefully broad so as to illustrate that Galago not only has been, but may be, utilized with success in a variety of research areas. Most papers deal with the pros and cons of utilizing Galago in a specific line of research and in many instances discuss potential problems which may arise. The established value of the lesser bushbaby in particular reseach endeavour is also discussed and illustrated by some contributors.

Book The Embryology of the Common Marmoset

Download or read book The Embryology of the Common Marmoset written by I.R. Phillips and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primates represent a diverse group with the phylogenetic relationships of the var ious species reflected in their early embryonic development. The members of the Tupaiidae, Lemuridae and Lorisidae show great similarities to the lower mammals and even birds. The Tarsiidae represent an intermediate step and the Platyrrhini and Catarrhini exhibit the greatest similarities to man. During the period of embryogenesis, the dimensions of an embryo are insufficient guide to its age and much more reliable information can be derived from a study of its external form and internal structure. Examination of embryological specimens from a variety of simian species dates back to the early 1900's but much of this material was collected in a haphazard way from animals shot in the wild. Heuser and Streeter (1941) depicted a series of embryos of the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) and correlated their gestational age with external form and size. Streeter (1951) arranged human em bryos, between 24. ± 1 and 47. ± 1 days of post-ovulation age, into age groups or devel opmental horizons based on their external form and internal structure. Each horizon was two days apart and numbered XI to XXIII. The transition from embryo to fetus occurred at the end of horizon XXIII and was arbitrarily dermed as the point where bone marrow invaded the cartilaginous precursor in the humerus. The earlier stages I-X have been dermed subsequently, (Heuser and Corner, 1957; O'Rahilly, 1973).

Book Biological and Behavioral Determinants of Language Development

Download or read book Biological and Behavioral Determinants of Language Development written by Norman A. Krasnegor and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a current, interdisciplinary perspective on language requisites from both a biological/comparative perspective and from a developmental/learning perspective. Perspectives regarding language and language acquisition are advanced by scientists of various backgrounds -- speech, hearing, developmental psychology, comparative psychology, and language intervention. This unique volume searches for a rational interface between findings and perspectives generated by language studies with humans and with chimpanzees. Intended to render a reconsideration as to the essence of language and the requisites to its acquisition, it also provides readers with perspectives defined by various revisionists who hold that language might be other than the consequence of a mutation unique to humans and might, fundamentally, not be limited to speech.

Book Mammals of Africa Volume II

Download or read book Mammals of Africa Volume II written by Jonathan Kingdon and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammals of Africa (MoA) is a series of six volumes which describes, in detail, every currently recognized species of African land mammal. This is the first time that such extensive coverage has ever been attempted, and the volumes incorporate the very latest information and detailed discussion of the morphology, distribution, biology and evolution (including reference to fossil and molecular data) of Africa's mammals. With more than 1,160 species and 16-18 orders, Africa has the greatest diversity and abundance of mammals in the world. The reasons for this and the mechanisms behind their evolution are given special attention in the series. Each volume follows the same format, with detailed profiles of every species and higher taxa. The series includes hundreds of colour illustrations and pencil drawings by Jonathan Kingdon highlighting the morphology and behaviour of the species concerned, as well as line drawings of skulls and jaws by Jonathan Kingdon and Meredith Happold. Every species also includes a detailed distribution map. Edited by Jonathan Kingdon, David Happold, Tom Butynski, Mike Hoffmann, Meredith Happold and Jan Kalina, and written by more than 350 authors, all experts in their fields, Mammals of Africa is as comprehensive a compendium of current knowledge as is possible. Extensive references alert readers to more detailed information. Volume II is edited by Thomas Butynski, Jonathan Kingdon and Jan Kalina and contains profiles of 93 species of primates; this includes the great apes, Old World monkeys, lorisids and galagos.
