Book excerpt: The problem of the focusing of pressure wave by a thick elliptical cylinder liquid lens has been treated in a rigorous manner. The size of the lens is of the order of or slightly greater than the wavelength of the incoming acoustic signal. Detailed computation has been carried out for a representative case in which a liquid lens with index of refraction of 1.8 and density of 1900 kg/cubic meter is assumed to be immersed in seawater. It is shown that a slight deformation of the boundary surface of a circular liquid lens results in significant changes in the location of the focalregion and that elliptical lens may provide stronger focusing than an equivalent circular lens. This research also points out the necessity pursuing an investigation on thin lenses where the focal regions are located outside the lenses. (Author).

Book excerpt: Rigorous solution to the wave equation for the penetrated and scattered fields of an underwater, elliptical cylindrical liquid lens that is illuminated by a line pressure source or by a plane pressure wave is obtained. Results are given in terms of Mathieu and modified Mathieu functions. It is found that each expansion coefficient for the scattered or penetrated pressure field is coupled with all expansion coefficients for the incident pressure field. Decoupling of these coefficients occurs when the elliptical cylinder lens degenerates to a circular cylinder lens. Also noted is the fact that the focal point for the intensity field does not always coincide with that for the pressure field. (Author).

Book excerpt: Focusing properties of liquid-filled cylindrical acoustic lenses are investigated theoretically and experimentally for d/lambda ratios greater than 15. A mathematical model which includes the effects of the lens shell is described and used to predict directivity patterns. Based on this model, a right-circular cylindrical lens, 40 cm in diameter, was constructed and tested at frequencies ranging from 25 to 900 khz. Agreement of experimental directivity patterns with those predicted demonstrated feasibility of the lens at d/lambda ratios up to 150, a factor of 10 greater than previously reported. Theoretical investigation indicates that for d/lambda ratios greater than 150 the elliptical cylindrical lens shows promise, but fabrication of an experimental model is yet to be undertaken.
