Setting aside the mere dross of circumstances in human life, why not vivify all amidst which we live and move by trans lating sense into spirit, and spirit into sense, thus rendering opaque things luminous, so that if no pure white light of truth can reach us, at least each step we tread may be impregnated with the stains and dyes of those coloured morsels of glass, so deftlyar ranged, through which such light as we are able to endure has its access to our eyes. Book A Printing History of Everyman s Library 1906 1982

Download or read book A Printing History of Everyman s Library 1906 1982 written by Terry Seymour and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total number of Everyman's Library volumes that still survive somewhere in the world exceeds 70 million. Since the inception of the Library in 1906, nearly 1200 unique volumes have been published, constantly placing the world's greatest books before a large public. A few of these titles proved unpopular and were never reprinted. But most were reprinted dozens of times, packaged in numerous ways, and benefited from updated editorial work and book design over the last century. Terry Seymour has studied and researched every aspect of this great mass of books. He now captures and distills this knowledge in A Printing History of Everyman's Library 1906-1982. A critical feature, of course, is to update the various collecting factoids that have emerged since 2005 when his Guide to Collecting Everyman's Library was published. The meat of the new book, however, is the Bibliographical Entries section. Each volume that has ever been printed receives its own entry, detailing every printing, each dust jacket variation, any new introductions, updated scarcity numbers, and all relevant notes. Typically an entry contains at least six lines of information, but often much more. In essence, each entry is a story written exclusively about each volume. Armed with this resource, collectors and booksellers can know reliably everything about the Everyman's Library volume that sits on their shelf or is ready to be purchased or sold. They will see how a book fits into the total printing history of that title, and be able to describe and value the book with precision. To further enhance the value of this book, color images illustrate all of the key collecting points. An extensive index of editors, translators and artists is now included. Not just a solo effort, the Printing History has been vetted by other expert collectors, ensuring greater accuracy and comprehensiveness.

Book The Promised Land a Drama of a People s Deliverance in Five Acts in the Elizabethan Style Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-12-29 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Promised Land a Drama of a People's Deliverance, in Five Acts, (in the Elizabethan Style) With regard to the last-mentioned point it may be objected that the women in the play are allowed more scope and freedom than is usual in the East but a reference to the Bible will show that the women of Israel in the early days probably had a good deal of independence. I think I am right in saying that the wearing of a veil by a woman is only twice alluded to in the Mosaic books, and then apparently as something out of the ordinary course. Book Religious Identities in Britain 1660 1832

Download or read book Religious Identities in Britain 1660 1832 written by Robert G. Ingram and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a series of studies focusing on individuals, this volume highlights the continued importance of religion and religious identity on British life throughout the long eighteenth century. From the Puritan divine and scholar Roger Morrice, active at the beginning of the period, to Dean Shipley who died in the reign of George IV, the individuals chosen chart a shifting world of enlightenment and revolution whilst simultaneously reaffirming the tremendous influence that religion continued to bring to bear. For, whilst religion has long enjoyed a central role in the study of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century British history, scholars of religion in the eighteenth century have often felt compelled to prove their subject's worth. Sitting uneasily at the juncture between the early modern and modern worlds, the eighteenth century has perhaps provided historians with an all-too-convenient peg on which to hang the origins of a secular society, in which religion takes a back-seat to politics, science and economics. Yet, as this study makes clear, in spite of the undoubted innovations and developments of this period, religion continued to be a prime factor in shaping society and culture. By exploring important connections between religion, politics and identity, and asking broad questions about the character of religion in Britain, the contributions put into context many of the big issues of the day. From the beliefs of the Jacobite rebels, to the notions of liberty and toleration, to the attitudes to the French Wars, the book makes an unambiguous and forceful statement about the centrality of religion to any proper understanding of British public life between the Restoration and the Reform Bill.

Book The Humbler Poets Second Series

Download or read book The Humbler Poets Second Series written by Wallace Wallace and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Humbler Poets (Second Series): A Collection of Newspaper and Periodical Verse 1885 to 1910 Not many realize, though the fact remains, that there are now publishing in English during every calendar year no fewer than a hundred volumes of significant and worthy verse, to which may be added two hundred volumes more which frequently contain passages of beauty. This implies that there are in the english-speaking world at least three hundred men and women who, already masters of an intricate and delightful technique, are inspired by sentiments lofty or tender, such as make for literary permanency. It is earnestly believed to be possible to compile every year from the verses given the light Of print during that time an anthology of short poems and excerpts which will compare favorably with any collection thus chronologically delimited gathered during any period of English literary history. Such a collection, so we feel assured, would suffer little, if at all, by comparison with the most brilliant twelvemonth of either the Elizabethan or Victorian era. Book Reception and the Classics

Download or read book Reception and the Classics written by William Brockliss and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-08 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together leading experts in a number of fields of the humanities to offer a new perspective on the classical tradition. Drawing on reception studies, philology and early modern studies, the essays explore the interaction between literary criticism and the multiple cultural contexts in which texts were produced, discovered, appropriated and translated. The intersection of Realpolitik and textual criticism, poetic and musical aesthetics, and authority and self-fashioning all come under scrutiny. The canonical Latin writers and their subsequent reception form the backbone of the volume, with a focus on the European Renaissance. It thus marks a reconnection between classical and early modern studies and the concomitant rapprochement of philological and cultural historical approaches to texts and other works of art. This book will be of interest to scholars in classics, Renaissance studies, comparative literature, English, Italian and art history.
