Download or read book Suffer and Be Still Routledge Revivals written by Martha Vicinus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1972, this book contains a collection of ten essays that document the feminine stereotypes that women fought against, and only partially erased, a hundred years ago. In an introductory essay, Martha Vicinus describes the perfect Victorian lady, showing that the ideal was a combination of sexual innocence, conspicuous consumption and worship of the family hearth. Indeed, this model in some form was the ideal of all classes as the perfect lady’s only functions were marriage and procreation. The text offers a valuable insight into Victorian culture and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Vital Statistics When, some years ago, I first undertook the duties of a Medical Officer of Health, I had considerable difficulty in obtaining trustworthy guidance in the preparation of statistical reports. My researches on the subject revealed the fact that the chief if not the only sources of trustworthy information were the official reports of the Registrar-General and some scattered articles in encyclopedias and in the transactions of learned societies. Further investigation showed that, apart from the reports and articles referred to, a large mass of statistical information was current, which was untrustworthy in its methods of compilation and arrangement, and fallacious in its inferences. It became necessary, therefore, to enter on a somewhat extensive examination of the whole subject; and from the notes gradually accumulated during the years which have since elapsed, I have prepared the present guide to the subject, in the hope that it may be as useful to others as such a guide would have been to me at an earlier stage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Vital Statistics The issue of the selections from the writings of Dr. Farr (vital Statistics by the Sanitary Institute in 1885, which appeared after I had begun my task, did not prevent me continuing it. Every one interested in the progress of public health owes a debt of gratitude to the Sanitary Institute, and to Mr. N. A. Humphreys, the editor of the work, for thus giving in a readily accessible form these selections from Dr. Farr's writings; but the form in which the work is necessarily cast - consisting of extracts from various reports and articles, the subjects of which not infrequently overlap, -although very valu able for reference, does not meet the requirements of the ordinary student. It is evident that in such a subject the substantive facts must be derived chiefly from the registrar-general's Reports and, where it is not otherwise stated, the reader may assume that the facts adduced in the following pages are derived from this source. The value of the registrar-general's Reports 1s Increasing year by year; and there is no country in the world which possesses so rich a mine of information for all who know how to avail themselves of its treasures. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive over view of eighteenth-century British medical reform, but as an economic historian, Buer considered the effect of diseases and medical intervention on population growth, not on medical ideas. Other optimistic views of the century either focused, like Buer, on the 'standard of living debate' or a related debate about the role (if any) of hospitals and public health measures in reducing mortality during the industrial revolution, giving only pasing attention to disease theory.

Download or read book New Perspectives on Human Resource Management Routledge Revivals written by John Storey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of human resource management has become topical and controversial. The term suggests that people in any organization are an asset to be upgraded and fully utilized rather than merely a variable cost to be minimized. This in turn implies that the way in which people are managed is a matter of crucial strategic concern. Increased international competition has produced various initiatives world-wide for new approaches to management, in particular human resource management. This searching set of interpretations, first published in 1983, will be of interest to serious practitioners and students alike.
Download or read book Revival Southern India 1936 written by Gilbert Slater and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals firstly with the economic and social conditions of life among the villagers, the artisans, and other workers in cities and towns of South India, and also with the new issues raised in India during the most momentous years of its history since the mutiny – the commercial and financial disturbances following the war, the sudden appearance of aggressive Trade Unionism, the famines of 1918 and 1920, the rise of the Home Rule agitation and the Non-Co-operation movement, and the coming into operation of the new Constitution of 1919. The author, who went to India in 1915 as Professor of Indian Economics in the University of Madras, was quickly brought into contact with heads of departments of the Provincial Government, was nominated by Lord Willingdon to the Madras Legislative Council, served in the Indian Board of Agriculture, and stayed on for a year in charge of the Madras Publicity Office. In these and in other ways he has had exceptional opportunities of getting insight into Indian problems from an unusual point of view.

Download or read book Professionalism for the Built Environment written by Simon Foxell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, this new book provides thought provoking commentary on the nature of the relationship between society, the prevailing economic system and professionalism in the built environment. It addresses the changing responsibilities of professionals and in particular their obligation to act in the wider public interest. It is both an introduction to and an examination of professionalism and professional bodies in the sector, including a view of the future of professionalism and the organisations serving it. Simon Foxell outlines the history of professionalism in the sector, comparing and contrasting the development of the three major historic professions working in the construction industry: civil engineering, architecture and surveying. He examines how their systems have developed over time, up to the current period dominated by large professional services firms, and looks at some options for the future, whilst asking difficult questions about ethics, training, education, public trust and expectation from within and outside the industry. The book concludes with a six-point plan to help, if not ensure, that the professions remain an effective and essential part of both society and the economy; a part that allows the system to operate smoothly and easily, but also fairly and to the benefit of all. Essential reading for built environment professionals and students doing the professional studies elements of their training or in the process of applying for chartership or registration. The issues and lessons are applicable across all building professions.
