Book School Hygiene and the Laws of Health

Download or read book School Hygiene and the Laws of Health written by Charles Porter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Hygiene and the Laws of Health: A Text-Book for Teachers and Students in Training The matter upon which this book is founded, formed the basis of a course of lectures delivered to the teachers acting under the Education Committee of Sheffield and the students of the Sheffield Training College. Some of those ,who attended the lectures being kind enough to consider them of value in connection with their school work, it was determined to arrange them in book form, in the hope that the information they contained might be of assistance to teachers elsewhere. The idea of the Education Committee in arranging for the course of lectures, was to afford the teachers an opportunity of acquiring such information as might assist them in protecting the health of the school children. It was desired that the course might include instruction, not only in what have been called the "laws of health," which the teachers might in turn impart to the children, but also hints on the manner of detecting diseases likely to be met with in school. The lectures themselves were largely modelled on the plan set out in the syllabus for the Sanitary Institute examination in School Hygiene: each system in the body was taken up in turn, the structure and functions of the organs composing it were considered, and the modes in which they might be affected by school conditions and disease, and how they were to be protected were described. The arrangement adopted for the lectures has been continued in the following pages, and each system has been treated of in a separate chapter in the first part of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hygiene of Schools and Scholars, for Teachers and Parents IT has often struck me in the course of my duty as a Medical Officer of Health in town and country, how deep seated is the belief that the ills which sanitary Officers endeavour to remove are part of the dispensation of Providence. If we can teach the young that 90 per cent. Of the illness and trouble in this world is due to man's own fault, mostly carelessness and selfishness, we shall effect great progress in sanitary advance. There are doubtless many books similar in scope to this little handbook, but with such an inert resisting mass to overcome, the teaching herein set forth can hardly be overdone. Download or read book Health Work in the Schools Classic Reprint written by Ernest Bryant Hoag and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Work in the Schools Educational hygiene has four chief divisions: (1) The Hygiene of Physical and Mental Growth; (2) Health Supervision in the Schools, including methods of health observation and teaching; (3) the Hygiene of Instruction; and (4) the Hygiene of the School Plant. The first of these divisions has been treated by one of the authors of this book in The Hygiene of the School Child, which has appeared as an earlier number of this Series, and the third, by the same author, is in preparation. The fourth division is to be covered by another author, and is also in preparation. The present volume deals with the problems in volved in health supervision, health examination, and hygiene teaching, in other words, with the second of the above divisions; and it is hoped that it will con tribute materially to the standardization of health supervision and to the broadening of its scope. Every one must realize that a great amount of what goes by the name of medical inspection of schools can be called health work only by courtesy. All along the line, among superintendents, teachers, school nurses, school boards, and even school doctors, education is needed which will lend a broader vision to the purpose and possibilities of genuine health supervision.
