Book The Electron Theory of Matter Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Electron Theory of Matter Classic Reprint written by Owen Willans Richardson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electron Theory of Matter His book is based on a course of lectures which I have delivered to graduate students at Princeton University during the last few years. My aim has been to exhibit the extent to which the fundamental facts of physical science may be coordinated by means of the conception of the electron and the laws of electrodynamics. In developing the subject I have started from the most elementary beginnings, and I have therefore found it necessary to include much matter which is to be found in any ordinary text-book of the theory of electricity and magnetism. It is hoped that the lack of conciseness thereby involved may be more than atoned for by the wider circle to which the book may appeal. The course of lectures at Princeton on which the book is founded proved useful as an introduction to the methods of modern mathematical physics in addition to forming a presentation of the results of recent physical discovery. The broad scope of the subject makes it imperative that a good deal of selection should be exercised as to the nature and treatment of the topics considered. In determining these, consideration has been given to importance, interest, and instructiveness, roughly in the order named. The necessary incompleteness is remedied to some extent by references to scientific papers and to other works. These references are intended to supplement the discussion in the text rather than to exhibit the historical development of the subject. Thus many important papers are not referred to. I have tried, however, to be as accurate as possible in any statements which deal specifically with historical matters. Acknowledgment is due to the author's friends, Prof. H. F. Baker and Mr. E. V. Appleton, who kindly read through the proofs of the new matter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electron Theory: A Popular Introduction to the New Theory of Electricity and Magnetism It was about sixty years ago when there appeared the first glimmerings Of the knowledge which has since ripened into that which we now possess, that neither the molecules of any natural object nor the parts Of which those molecules consist are ever at rest; that, on the contrary, swift and orderly movements are ever in progress among them and within them; and that where bodies appear to us to be stationary, it is only be cause this great internal activity is on too small a scale, the parts moving too tiny, and the motions subject to too rapid changes Of direction for senses like ours even when assisted by the micro scope to Obtain any suggestion that all this activity is going forwards. Accordingly, until other means than direct Observation of arriving at the truth were discovered, every one remained under the delusion that the Objects about us on the earth could be brought to rest absolutely freed from every motion except the celestial motion, which is consequent upon their being on a planet which rotates upon an axis, revolves in an orbit round the sun, and accompanies the solar system in its peregrinations through space. Download or read book The Electron Theory of Magnetism Classic Reprint written by Elmer H. Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electron Theory of Magnetism The theory, worked out by Langevin for paramagnetic gases only, was later extended by Weiss to ferromagnetic substances. Weiss introduced a new notion into the theory of magnetism, viz., that of an intrinsic or molecular magnetic field by means of which he could account in a very beautiful way for the magnetic properties of the crystal pyrrhotite and many of the magnetic properties of iron, nickel, and cobalt. He has also contributed most essentially to our experimental knowledge of the ferromagnetic phenomena. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Corpuscular Theory of Matter Classic Reprint written by J. J. Thomson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corpuscular Theory of Matter In Chapter VII. I give reasons for thinking that the number of corpuscles in an atom of an element is not greatly in excess of the atomic weight of the element, thus in particular that the number of corpuscles in an atom of hydrogen is not large. Some writers seem to think that this makes the conception of the model atom more difficult. I am unable to follow this view; it seems to me to make the conception easier, since it makes the number of possible atoms much more nearly equal to the number of the chemical elements. It has, however, an important bearing on our conception of the origin of the mass of the atom, as if the number of corpuscles in the atom is of the same order as the atomic weight we cannot regard the mass of an atom as mainly or even appreciably due to the mass of the corpuscles. I am indebted to Mr. G. W. C. Kave for assisting in revising the proof sheets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
