Book Flow Deformation and Fracture

Download or read book Flow Deformation and Fracture written by G. I. Barenblatt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over forty years of teaching experience are distilled into this text. The guiding principle is the wide use of the concept of intermediate asymptotics, which enables the natural introduction of the modeling of real bodies by continua. Beginning with a detailed explanation of the continuum approximation for the mathematical modeling of the motion and equilibrium of real bodies, the author continues with a general survey of the necessary methods and tools for analyzing models. Next, specific idealized approximations are presented, including ideal incompressible fluids, elastic bodies and Newtonian viscous fluids. The author not only presents general concepts but also devotes chapters to examining significant problems, including turbulence, wave-propagation, defects and cracks, fatigue and fracture. Each of these applications reveals essential information about the particular approximation. The author's tried and tested approach reveals insights that will be valued by every teacher and student of mechanics.

Book Mechanical Characterization of Materials and Wave Dispersion

Download or read book Mechanical Characterization of Materials and Wave Dispersion written by Yvon Chevalier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 50 years, the various available methods of investigating dynamic properties of materials have resulted in significant advances in this area of materials science. Dynamic tests have also recently proven to be as efficient as static tests, and have the advantage that they are often easier to use at lower frequency. This book explores dynamic testing, the methods used, and the experiments performed, placing a particular emphasis on the context of bounded medium elastodynamics. The book initially focuses on the complements of continuum mechanics before moving on to the various types of rod vibrations: extensional, bending and torsional. In addition, chapters contain practical examples alongside theoretical discussion to facilitate the reader's understanding. The results presented are the culmination of over 30 years of research by the authors and will be of great interest to anyone involved in this field.

Book Analytical Methods in Rotor Dynamics

Download or read book Analytical Methods in Rotor Dynamics written by Andrew D. Dimarogonas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and construction of rotating machinery operating at supercritical speeds was, in the 1920s, an event of revolutionary importance for the then new branch of dynamics known as rotor dynamics. In the 1960s, another revolution occurred: In less than a decade, imposed by operational and economic needs, an increase in the power of turbomachinery by one order of magnitude took place. Dynamic analysis of complex rotor forms became a necessity, while the importance of approximate methods for dynamic analysis was stressed. Finally, the emergence of fracture mechanics, as a new branch of applied mechanics, provided analytical tools to investigate crack influence on the dynamic behavior of rotors. The scope of this book is based on all these developments. No topics related to the well-known classical problems are included, rather the book deals exclusively with modern high-power turbomachinery.

Book Theory of Elasticity for Scientists and Engineers

Download or read book Theory of Elasticity for Scientists and Engineers written by Teodor M. Atanackovic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to be an introduction to elasticity theory. It is as sumed that the student, before reading this book, has had courses in me chanics (statics, dynamics) and strength of materials (mechanics of mate rials). It is written at a level for undergraduate and beginning graduate engineering students in mechanical, civil, or aerospace engineering. As a background in mathematics, readers are expected to have had courses in ad vanced calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. Our experience in teaching elasticity theory to engineering students leads us to believe that the course must be problem-solving oriented. We believe that formulation and solution of the problems is at the heart of elasticity theory. 1 Of course orientation to problem-solving philosophy does not exclude the need to study fundamentals. By fundamentals we mean both mechanical concepts such as stress, deformation and strain, compatibility conditions, constitu tive relations, energy of deformation, and mathematical methods, such as partial differential equations, complex variable and variational methods, and numerical techniques. We are aware of many excellent books on elasticity, some of which are listed in the References. If we are to state what differentiates our book from other similar texts we could, besides the already stated problem-solving ori entation, list the following: study of deformations that are not necessarily small, selection of problems that we treat, and the use of Cartesian tensors only.
