Book excerpt: ETOP is a contemporary medical novel that explores the multifaceted and controversial subject of elective termination of pregnancy, or abortion. There are countless stories of women who find themselves in difficult, if not impossible, situations where they conclude their only option, or the most reasonable option, is to terminate their pregnancy. Some women make this life and death decision with the support their partner. Others are pressured into choosing abortion by their partner. Unfortunately, many women are left to deal with their situation without any support what-so-ever. This book intertwines many personal and some tragic stories from the authors experience as a practicing OB/GYN over the past twenty years. There are honest and noble people who have totally opposite views on the issue. Some of the characters, like real people, change their views based on their situation or life experiences. Extremist garner the headlines and sometimes their violence causes pain and suffering for innocent victims. The setting of a inner city medical center shows the challenges countless hospital professional face on a daily basis and the personal rewards they glean from their dedication to the healing arts. The unconventional life style and the mysterious past of a staff physician arouse the interest of a beautiful young investigative reporter. She is determined to find the truth before she allows herself to fall in love. Whether you are prolife or prochoice there is no doubt many people face anguish from their decision to abort or not to abort a pregnancy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a yellow-throat toucan, and lyrics from Jimmy Buffett's songs help Joy solve a month-old murder? The central Florida town of Uncertain looms as a mere distraction for Joy Wagner when the new-to-her motorcycle breaks down under a banner publicizing the annual mud festival. Why would anyone celebrate mud? Sounds disgusting, but she's stuck here till her bike's fixed. In less than an hour, her luck changes. She's offered pizza-for-life and a job at Moore's General Store. The job comes with two perks: a yellow-throated toucan, which is odd enough, but add to that the ghost of Merrick Moore and life takes a vociferously strange turn. The fatherly man is friendly and much loved, and related to most everyone in town. Trouble is, he's been dead a month. Townspeople believe he died of natural causes but he insists he was murdered. Can Joy expose the killer before anyone finds out she's been getting clues from a ghost...and a toucan? More important, can she find the killer before the killer finds her?

  • Author : Joseph Epstein

Download or read book Envy written by Joseph Epstein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-28 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malice that cannot speak its name, cold-blooded but secret hostility, impotent desire, hidden rancor and spite--all cluster at the center of envy. Envy clouds thought, writes Joseph Epstein, clobbers generosity, precludes any hope of serenity, and ends in shriveling the heart. Of the seven deadly sins, he concludes, only envy is no fun at all.Writing in a conversational, erudite, self-deprecating style that wears its learning lightly, Epstein takes us on a stimulating tour of the many faces of envy. He considers what great thinkers--such as John Rawls, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche--have written about envy; distinguishes between envy, yearning, jealousy, resentment, and schadenfreude ("a hardy perennial in the weedy garden of sour emotions"); and catalogs the many things that are enviable, including wealth, beauty, power, talent, knowledge and wisdom, extraordinary good luck, and youth (or as the title of Epstein's chapter on youth has it, "The Young, God Damn Them"). He looks at resentment in academia, where envy is mixed with snobbery, stirred by impotence, and played out against a background of cosmic injustice; and he offers a brilliant reading of Othello as a play more driven by Iago's envy than Othello's jealousy. He reveals that envy has a strong touch of malice behind it--the envious want to destroy the happiness of others. He suggests that envy of the astonishing success of Jews in Germany and Austria may have lurked behind the virulent anti-Semitism of the Nazis. As he proved in his best-selling Snobbery, Joseph Epstein has an unmatched ability to highlight our failings in a way that is thoughtful, provocative, and entertaining. If envy is no fun, Epstein's Envy is truly a joy to read.

Book The Transmission of Affect

Download or read book The Transmission of Affect written by Teresa Brennan and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that one can soak up someone else's depression or anxiety or sense the tension in a room is familiar. Indeed, phrases that capture this notion abound in the popular vernacular: "negative energy," "dumping," "you could cut the tension with a knife." The Transmission of Affect deals with the belief that the emotions and energies of one person or group can be absorbed by or can enter directly into another. The ability to borrow or share states of mind, once historically and culturally assumed, is now pathologized, as Teresa Brennan shows in relation to affective transfer in psychiatric clinics and the prevalence of psychogenic illness in contemporary life. To neglect the mechanism by which affect is transmitted, the author claims, has serious consequences for science and medical research. Brennan's theory of affect is based on constant communication between individuals and their physical and social environments. Her important book details the relationships among affect, energy, and "new maladies of the soul," including attention deficit disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome, codependency, and fibromyalgia.
