Book The Effects of Windchill Exposure on the Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio

Download or read book The Effects of Windchill Exposure on the Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio written by Jonathan James Warrenchuk and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Millions of snow crabs, 'Chionoecetes opilio, ' are aerially exposed during sorting in the annual Bering Sea commercial fishery. A laboratory experiment measured snow crab responses to windchill exposure. Crabs were exposed to 8 to 16 m/s windspeed and air temperatures from -2 to -10 C̊ for 5 minutes. Mortality, autonomy, and righting response were assessed for seven days post-treatment. Crabs experienced 40% to 100% mortality at windchill from -10 to 16 C̊. Reduced exposure time significantly reduced mortality. Autonomy was variable but pronounced below -10 C̊ windchill. The righting response was impaired after all but the least severe treatment. Estimates of mortality of discarded snow crab in 1998 were calculated from deadloss of retained crab, a windchill model, and a temperature/windspeed model. No relationship existed between catch deadloss and the windchill conditions when the crabs were caught. Mortality of non-retained snow crab was estimated at 3.6% by the windchill model and 19.6% by the temperature /windspeed model"--Leaf 3.

Book Effect of Seismic Energy on Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio

Download or read book Effect of Seismic Energy on Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio written by John Robert Christian and published by [Calgary] : Environmental Studies Research Funds. This book was released on 2004 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern has been expressed by commercial fishermen that seismic surveys may affect the health and/or behaviour of snow crab. This study examines the effects of seismic survey air gun noise on snow crab & snow crab catches. The study investigated a number of health, behavioural, & reproductive variables before, during, & after seismic shooting in a preliminary attempt to assess potential effects on physical, biochemical, or activity patterns in subject crabs. The study site was Conception Bay, Newfoundland, an area considered to be typical prime crab grounds. Fishing experiments were conducted in a controlled manner using standard & modified crab traps, with seven sets prior to shooting and six afterward. Crab movement & behaviour after exposure to air gun shots was monitored for caged crabs by video camera and for transmitter-tagged crabs by hydrophones. Caged crabs were also exposed to air gun shots at various depths and were sampled to assess potential indicators of stress & physical damage, in comparison to control crabs not exposed to shots. An important component of that study was to determine if lethal effects occurred three months after exposure. Results of this research are presented & discussed and direct effects on crab physiology are summarized.

Download or read book King Crabs of the World written by Bradley G. Stevens and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With species existing in all subpolar seas, king crabs are one of the most valuable seafoods. Major fluctuations in their abundance have stimulated a flurry of research and a rapid expansion of the scientific literature in the last decade. King Crabs of the World: Biology and Fisheries Management consolidates extensive knowledge on the biology, systematics, anatomy, life history, and fisheries of king crabs and presents it in a single volume. This book is the first comprehensive scientific reference devoted to the biology and fisheries of king crabs. The first part of the book describes king crabs and their place in the world, covering geographic distribution, depth and temperature ranges, and maps of known habitats. Chapters examine phylogenetic relationships, evolutionary history and phylogeography, internal and external anatomy of king crabs, and the history of North Pacific fisheries. There is also a chapter that presents a comprehensive overview of diseases and other anomalies of king crabs. The second part of the book describes the life history and biology of various king crab species, including embryonic development and environmental factors, the development and biology of larvae, the ecology and biology of juvenile stages, reproductive strategies of fished species, and the growth and feeding of king crabs and their ecological impacts. The third part of the book discusses human and environmental interactions with king crabs through fisheries, management, and ecosystems. Topics include the impacts of fishing—bycatch, handling, and discard mortality—king crab aquaculture and stock enhancement, and king crabs from various regions such as Southern Hemisphere waters, the Barents Sea, and Alaska. A chapter synthesizing various aspects of king crab biology provides an ecosystem-scale perspective and the final chapter presents the author’s outlook on the future of king crab research and populations.

Book The Effect of Temperature on Circulating Levels of Methyl Farnesoate and Ecdysteroid Hormones in Female Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio from the Bering Sea

Download or read book The Effect of Temperature on Circulating Levels of Methyl Farnesoate and Ecdysteroid Hormones in Female Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio from the Bering Sea written by Jacqueline Loretta Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Methyl farnesoate, a reproductive hormone in crustaceans, was detected for the first time in the hemolymph of female Chionoecetes opilio. Ovigerous crabs were maintained at -1,0, 1, and 3° C to represent near bottom temperatures of the Bering Sea, throughout a reproductive cycle to assess changes, and temperature effects, in hormone levels associated with ovarian maturation, hatching and subsequent extrusion of the next clutch. Methyl farnesoate (MF) levels did not change significantly in any treatment throughout the duration of egg incubation. Levels of MF significantly decreased in crabs exposed to -1 and 0° C when initial versus post extrusion levels were compared. Ecdysteroid levels remained low throughout the egg incubation period but increased significantly after extrusion in all treatments except the 0° C treatment. Decrease in temperature significantly prolonged time to extrusion between all temperature groups except 3 and 1 ° C. Extrusion was delayed in the 0 and -1 ° C treatments when compared to the 3 and 1 ° C treatments. The duration of extrusion increased by as much as 77% (between -1 and 0° C) as temperature decreased, suggesting changes in temperature can have a significant effect on the reproductive timing in C. opilio"--Leaf iii.

Book Age Validation Size at age Size at maturity and Age at maturity in Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio from Different Thermal Regimes in Newfoundland

Download or read book Age Validation Size at age Size at maturity and Age at maturity in Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio from Different Thermal Regimes in Newfoundland written by Nicole Catlin and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calcein dye was used to determine the deposition rate of growth bands on snow crab gastric mill ossicles, although this was unsuccessful due to dye leaching. Annual deposition of growth bands was, however, corroborated based on age estimates from size-frequency histograms. There is limited understanding of the effects of temperature on snow crab growth and sexual maturation. Band counts revealed no significant difference in size-at-age, size-at-maturity, and age-at-maturity between crabs inhabiting “colder” and “warmer” waters around Newfoundland, but a significant difference in size-at-age and size-at-maturity between males (larger) and females (smaller) was found. Some of my findings were consistent and others inconsistent, with the literature, which may have been partly due to a warming trend preceding this study and/or crab movements. Future studies should attempt to relate snow crab growth and maturation to the temperature they experience throughout their lifetime, which should assist fisheries management in a rapidly changing climate.
