Book Educating the Other Half

Download or read book Educating the Other Half written by Ronald L. Rubenzer and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The document looks at left/right brain research as it relates to learning styles and teaching styles, particularly in special education. An initial section on brain basics covers the history of brain research, methods of investigation, cerebral dominance, divisions of labor of the bifunctional brain, language and related functions, bilingualism, learning styles, traditional education and the single brain, and emotions and the brain. A second section considers the need to integrate both convergent left-hemisphere modes in learning experiences. Another section examines determinants of neurologically based learning styles including the impact of age, sex, and handedness on left or right brain learning style preference. The effects of relaxation and diet upon brain functioning is the topic of the fourth section. The fifth section discusses findings relative to the study of learning disabilities, mental health, and creativity. Methods for educational assessment of learning styles are reviewed, such as the Structure of Intellect Learning Abilities Test and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised. Steps toward dealing with the whole child in the educational system should incorporate consideration of teachers' verbal and nonverbally expressed attitudes, relaxation strategies, general strategies which more fully involve the brain in learning, and curricular strategies which promote integrated processing of information. Following a summary and a list of implications for education are appendixes which contain 35 activities to stimulate integrated/right brain processes and a brief report on the deprivation of estimates for national prevalence of right brain children. Book Teaching for the Two sided Mind

Download or read book Teaching for the Two sided Mind written by Linda VerLee Williams and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1983 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research on the brain has revolutionized our concept of how we think. The two sides of the brain serve radically different functions. The left hemisphere is associated with linear, analytic thought; the right hemisphere governs spatial, integrative thought. In Teaching for the Two-Sided Mind Linda VerLee Williams explores the application of this important research to the classroom, summarizing current knowledge, discussing its implications, and providing practical teaching techniques that draw upon the right side of the brain. Students need right-brain strength to achieve balanced thinking skills and to activate a full range of cognitive and creative abilities. Right-brain techniques are remarkably effective in teaching children with learning disabilities and provide a valuable boost to gifted and average students. Specific classroom activities employing visual thinking, fantasy, metaphor, multisensory learning, music, laboratory experiments and field trips are described in Teaching for the Two-Sided Mind. The activities are suitable for classes from early elementary to high school level." Teachers, parents and all those interested in education will find Teaching for the Two-Sided Mind a fascinating exploration of how the most recent psychological findings can be put to use in the classroom. Book Reading to Learn

Download or read book Reading to Learn written by Richard L. Allington and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2002-04-29 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourth-graders around the country face new, high-stakes standardized tests, drawing increased attention to the need for effective literacy instruction in the upper-elementary grades. This essential book goes beyond political catch-phrases to examine what actually works in the fourth-grade classroom. After reviewing current research on upper-elementary reading instruction, the book takes readers directly into the classrooms of six highly successful teachers. Like the previously published Learning to Read, which focused on the first grade, Reading to Learn offers a rare view of the techniques and strategies good teachers use to engage students, help them develop as thoughtful readers and writers, and bolster self-directed learning and literate conversation. Bringing to life the complexities of day-to-day work with diverse students, the book provides inspiration and practical ideas for any teacher in the upper-elementary grades.
