Restoration and conservation of this species are currently under way across the upper Colorado River basin, but guidance to inform management decisions related to the impacts of climate change on cutthroat is lacking. Shifts in the thermal distribution of freshwater fish have been documented, and will continue to occur as cold water habitat is threatened by warming water temperatures. Coupled air and water temperature data allow for an estimation of potential resistance and resilience to warming, determining the effect that local air has on stream temperature. The United States Forest Service, cooperating with federal agencies, state agencies and private landowners, placed temperature loggers in the water and two air locations at 50 sites. To select a representative subset of sites, six habitat characteristics of each Colorado River cutthroat trout core conservation population were considered. These characteristics include solar input, elevation, watershed area, riparian vegetation, groundwater input, and the 30-year mean maximum July air temperature. Results from coupled temperature loggers indicate that the relationship between air and water temperature in the upper Colorado River basin is neither linear, nor one-to-one. Using Mohseni's (2003) equation, the relationship between air and water temperature was fit to a nonlinear regression curve. Analysis shows that the median rise in daily maximum water temperature is only 0.41℗ʻC for a 1.0℗ʻC increase in the median daily maximum air temperature. Air temperature exerts the most influence over water temperature; however, these results indicate that there are other characteristics that influence stream temperature. To determine these characteristics, analysis of the six habitat characteristics used for site selection in addition to aspect, slope, and latitude were used to model multiple temperature metrics. The best model, nonlinear water to air temperature relationship, had an R2 between actual and predicted values of 0.71. It also became clear that using multi-metric analysis would provide a much more robust indicator of resistance. This work will allow managers to consider potential climate change resistance or resilience in project prioritization, by understanding potential habitat characteristics to buffer stream warming.

Book excerpt: Recent studies suggest that competition from brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis; EBT) may have negative effects (e.g. displacement) on Lahontan cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi; LCT). Results from these studies have failed to elucidate the responsible mechanisms and have not examined if changing environmental conditions result in competitive/subordinate role reversals. The primary objectives of this study were to 1) determine if LCT and EBT compete for resources in a stream in which they co-occur, 2) determine the mechanisms responsible for the apparent competition and 3) determine if the results from competitive interactions change under variable environmental conditions. A field study examined how LCT and EBT interacted in a colonization situation typical of many LCT reintroductions, and provided insights into how LCT responded, under natural conditions, to EBT under various habitat conditions. A laboratory experiment, informed largely from the field study, was designed to force competitive interactions and measure the responses of LCT under varying habitat and environmental conditions. Results from the field manipulation revealed that EBT re-colonized a section of stream farther and faster than LCT and that about 25% of the individuals of both species stayed in the relocation pool. When in sympatry, LCT lost five times as much weight as EBT during the three week trial (2.5g to 0.5g, respectively). Lahontan cutthroat trout almost always had empty stomachs whereas EBT usually had at least some food present in their stomachs. Under laboratory conditions where density, species proportions, and temperature were manipulated, LCT typically lost weight and exhibited elevated blood plasma cortisol levels, an indicator of stress, during the 9 day trials (-8% and ~60 ng/mL, respectively) whereas EBT typically gained weight and exhibited lower cortisol levels (+1% and ~23 ng/mL). When the water temperature remained at 13°C, EBT gained an average of 5% of their body weight and had low plasma cortisol levels (~16 ng/mL) whereas LCT lost an average of 6% of their body weight and had elevated plasma cortisol levels (~40 ng/mL). As temperatures increased to 23°C, both species lost weight and exhibited elevated cortisol levels but LCT lost more weight than EBT (11% vs. 5%). As the proportion of EBT increased relative to LCT in experimental trials, LCT lost more weight and generally exhibited higher cortisol levels. Additionally, feeding observations in tanks that contained both species indicated that EBT were the first feed greater than 90% of the time, while LCT almost never fed and remained inactive when in the presence of EBT. In tanks that did not contain EBT, LCT were active and readily fed. Collectively, these results suggest that EBT are the dominant competitor and that the mechanisms for competitive dominance may, in part, be both physiological and behavioral in nature.

Book excerpt: The greenback cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki stomias) is classified as a threatened subspecies under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Non-native brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) displace greenback cutthroat trout in montane streams, but the mechanisms for displacement are not understood. In this study, data on population dynamics, body condition, and feeding ecology of greenback cutthroat and brook trout were used in investigating competition for food and predation as potential mechanisms for displacement of greenback cutthroat trout by brook trout. During 2000 and 2001, trout populations and physical habitat were surveyed at 10 stream reaches in the South Platte and Arkansas River drainages in Colorado. Study areas included sites with (1) cutthroat trout only, (2) brook trout only, (3) both species, and (4) both species with experimental removal of brook trout. Complementary techniques, including analysis of stomach contents, stomach fullness, body condition, and stable isotopes of C and N, were used to describe the trophic niche of each species across the 10 sites.
