Book The Effects of Video Modeling on Test of Gross Motor Development 3 Performance Among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book The Effects of Video Modeling on Test of Gross Motor Development 3 Performance Among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Layne Katherine Case and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been reported to have motor skill delays and deficits. However, there have been challenges to these findings on whether these deficits are due to lack of movement skills or inaccurate assessment methods. Due to relative strengths in processing visual stimuli as opposed to verbal stimuli within this population, instructional and assessment strategies that incorporate visual presentations are recommended. One visual support approach that has found to be successful among children with ASD is video modeling. Video modeling has been shown in the research to improve and maintain behaviors such as social and communicative skills, play skills, and self-help skills, but use is limited in physical activity and motor assessment settings. It is hypothesized that video modeling strategies may also improve motor performance by enhancing accuracy of motor skill assessments. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of video modeling on the assessment of motor skills among children with ASD. The Test of Gross Motor Development-3 (TGMD-3) was administered to measure motor skills of children in this study. Thirteen children with ASD (ages 11-16) and fifteen children without ASD (ages 3-11) participated in this study. Participants performed the TGMD-3 under two separate protocols (traditional condition and video modeling condition) in a counterbalanced order. The video modeling condition involved video demonstrations of the selected TGMD-3 skills made by the primary investigator and shown on an Apple iPad Air. The two testing conditions were completed on two distinct days within approximately 7 days of each other. Two repeated-measures one-way ANOVAs were used to examine the differences in gross motor scores between the testing conditions. Although gross motor scores of the video modeling condition among children with ASD increased by approximately 2 points, differences were not found to be statistically significant. Scores of children without ASD decreased by approximately 2 points following the video modeling condition, though differences were also not statistically significant. Two separate one-way repeated measures ANOVAs investigating the effectiveness of video modeling on total assessment duration revealed significant increases in assessment time using the video modeling condition, suggesting that the video modeling condition takes longer than the traditional condition. Lastly, two 2x3 (condition by preference) repeated measures ANOVAs revealed that both children with and without ASD perform better using the preferred condition (traditional versus video modeling) of the TGMD-3 though these differences were not significant. Future research is needed in order to further explore the effectiveness of video modeling strategies among children with ASD. Additionally, it is recommended that effective video modeling designs and procedures within motor assessment environments are provided in the literature.

Book Effectiveness of Video Modeling on Motor Performance for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book Effectiveness of Video Modeling on Motor Performance for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Melissa Bittner and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The newly adopted Every Student Succeeds Act (Lam, Mercer, Podolsky, & Darling-Hammond, 2016) requires that school districts use evidence-based practices for student outcomes. Evidence-based practices are based on supported research that are specific to different fields within education (e.g., physical education) and have also reported evidence of increased positive behaviors with specific groups of students (e.g., children with autism spectrum disorder [ASD]). The development of fundamental motor skills in children with ASD is dependent on teachers using evidence-based practices (e.g., picture task cards [PTC], video modeling). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the impact of three types of motor performance instructional strategies (i.e., PTCs, ExerciseBuddy application [EB App], combination) on teaching motor performance to children with ASD. Six children (CA = 5 to 9 years) were purposively selected with ASD. A randomized alternating-treatment design with no baseline was conducted 3 days a week, for 15 min, for 4 consecutive weeks. To determine the raw score for each participant, the investigator and two research assistants evaluated the performance criteria of the Test of Gross Motor Development-3 (Ulrich, 2018) and established an inter-rater reliability score of 88% (range = 73 to 97%). Based on visual analysis of the data, the average of overlapping data between protocol conditions across participants approached 100%. Within the limitations of this investigation, it was concluded that there was no functional relation between PTCs, EB App, or combination instructional protocols during motor performance for children with ASD.

Book The Effectiveness of Video Modeling to Teach Gross Motor Play Sequences to Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book The Effectiveness of Video Modeling to Teach Gross Motor Play Sequences to Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Ariel Graham and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motor development of preschool-age children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has received increased interest among researchers, as evidence of gross motor deficits and atypical behavior for this group emerges (Lloyd, M., Macdonald, M., & Lord, C. (2011). There is extensive research demonstrating the benefits that video modeling provides for children with ASD. The present study examined the effectiveness of video modeling on the acquisition of chained gross motor play sequences for children diagnosed with ASD. Four children were taught to functionally engage with an obstacle course that involved a complex chained sequence of behaviors. Three out of four of the participants acquired the modeled behaviors. These results provide empirical evidence that support the effectiveness of using video modeling as an approach to teach gross motor play activities.

Book Teaching Disabled Children in Physical Education

Download or read book Teaching Disabled Children in Physical Education written by Anthony J. Maher and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-30 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role that research plays in pedagogical practices when teaching disabled children and young people in physical education classes. It scrutinises the practices that are commonly used by teachers and coaches, and advocated by academics, and explores the evidence base that supports them. This book covers disability broadly, including a focus on autism, learning difficulties, and visual impairment. It offers guidance to practitioners by explaining what is (or is not) available to support commonly suggested pedagogical practices, paying particular attention to research highlighting the voices of disabled persons and feelings associated with inclusion (that is, belonging, acceptance, and value), and whether these practices can help disabled students enjoy these subjective experiences. Bringing together the very latest research with an assessment of current – and future – pedagogical practices, this concise and insightful book is invaluable reading for all pre-service and in-service teachers or coaches with an interest in physical education, disability, or special educational needs, as well as any advanced student or researcher working in these areas.

Book The Effects of Video Modeling and Video Feedback on Object Control Skills for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book The Effects of Video Modeling and Video Feedback on Object Control Skills for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Miguel Angel Pelayo-Zepeda and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of video modeling combined with immediate video feedback on the performance of object control skills used in the game of basketball for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Two male students aged 12 and 13, who had a previous diagnosis of ASD and attended a middle school in Northern California were recruited for this study. A multiple baseline across behaviors single case design was used to determine the impact of the interventions on the performance of the basketball skills. Results from this study suggest that the combined use of video modeling and video feedback have a positive effect on object control skills for individuals with ASD. Researchers moving forward should extend the interventions focus on a combination of skills and other combinations of video-based instruction and associated disabilities.

Book The Effectiveness of Using Video Modeling Techniques to Improve Motor Skills for Preschool Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book The Effectiveness of Using Video Modeling Techniques to Improve Motor Skills for Preschool Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Atyh Abdullah Hadadi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beside the main syndromes of socialization and communication for individuals with autism spectrum disorders, they also have impairments in motor skills, such as ball skills (catching and throwing) and postural stability (standing and walking balance). The main objective of this dissertation is to improve motor skills for preschooler children with ASD through use of video-modeling techniques. A secondary objective of this research was to find a correlation between the development and improvement of ball skills and balance tasks. Twenty-six children with ASD were divided into two groups. Twenty-six children with ASD from 3-5 years old participated in two groups: one using video-modeling and another using live-demonstrations as early interventions. Four independent variables of motor skills were used in this study, including catching, throwing, standing and walking balance, throughout 10 sessions. Each session included four blocks with which to practice each motor skill in about 60 minutes. The results of this study indicated that there were positive improvements for the video-modeling group in the performance of ball skills (catching and throwing) and balance tasks (standing and walking) with significant correlation between the development of ball skills and balance tasks. The findings of this study contribute to knowledge regarding the development of motor skills for children with ASD, and they provides caregivers who are working with children, such as physical education teachers, therapists, and parents, video modeling as a teaching strategy to enhance the motor skills as an early intervention.

As a result, more children than ever are being diagnosed with ASD. However, since 2002, there has been a more significant increase which has almost doubled. Currently 1 in 88 children (11.3 per 1,000) in the United States has been identified as having an Autism Spectrum Disorder which is a 23% increase since the last report was released from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in 2009.

Book Evaluating the Impact of Video Based Instruction and Immediate Feedback on the Performance of Three Gross Motor Skills for Participants with Down Syndrome

Download or read book Evaluating the Impact of Video Based Instruction and Immediate Feedback on the Performance of Three Gross Motor Skills for Participants with Down Syndrome written by Alyssa Gadberry and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of video based instruction combined with immediate visual feedback on the performance of three different gross motor skills for children with Down Syndrome (DS). The participants in this study are two children with DS. They were selected for this study based upon these qualifying factors: enrolled in a moderate/severe special day class, enrolled in a title one school, have Down syndrome and displayed deficits in gross motor abilities based upon the administration of the Total Gross Motor Development-3 (TGMD-3) assessment. The research design is a multiple baseline design where three areas of concern are evaluated. These areas included skipping, overhand throw and underhand roll. The results of the study showed that in order for video modeling to be effective, multiple opportunities to view the video needed to present to participants. Video based modeling was combined with immediate visual feedback. The participants made minimal progress in the areas of overhand throw and underhand roll but the participants did not improve in the area of skipping. The participants' motor patterns and performance of skipping were identical to another indicating a correlation to DS. This research shows that video based instruction is often more effective when paired with other evidence based practices.

Book Effects of Multiple and Single Exemplar Video Modeling on Scripted and Unscripted Play Actions

Download or read book Effects of Multiple and Single Exemplar Video Modeling on Scripted and Unscripted Play Actions written by Gagana Sanchula and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preschool aged children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have noticeable deficits in play skills that impede the development of gross and fine motor skills, language and communication skills, thinking and problem-solving skills, and social skills. This study aimed to teach three preschool-aged children with ASD to engage in solitary pretend play behaviors. An adapted alternating treatments design embedded in a multiple probe design across participants was used to evaluate the effects of multiple exemplar video modeling on scripted and unscripted play actions of children with ASD. In the current study, video modeling led to the acquisition of play skills for children with ASD. Additionally, the current study has the potential to extend existing video modeling research by incorporating multiple exemplar video models to demonstrate the emergence of unscripted play actions during pretend play in the natural environment.

Book The Effects of Video Modeling on Spontaneous Requesting in Children Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder ASD

Download or read book The Effects of Video Modeling on Spontaneous Requesting in Children Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder ASD written by Reana Randolph and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied behavioral analysis (ABA) is the science in which tactics derived from the principles of behavior are applied systematically to improve socially significant behavior and experimentation is used to identify the variables responsible for behavior change (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2007). Through the research of ABA, we are advancing ways to teach and help individuals with ASD. One excellent evidence of this is video modeling and the effects it has on children with ASD. This study was created to observe the effects of video modeling on spontaneous requesting of rehearsed and non-rehearsed targets. Additionally, this study focused on limitations to video modeling by conducting research in the participant’s classroom, having the participant’s teacher lead the research, and utilizing paraprofessionals to collect data. Two parallel multiple baseline experiments were conducted for six students, though only five completed intervention. Of the five who completed intervention, five effects were demonstrated. All five participant’s maintained levels of spontaneous requesting without additional intervention reviews.

Book Video Modelling and Behaviour Analysis

Download or read book Video Modelling and Behaviour Analysis written by Mickey Keenan and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2006-06-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a successful educational method for developing social and communication skills in children with autism. The use of video modelling in ABA programmes has demonstrated great effectiveness in teaching behavioural skills to autistic children, and this book explains how and why. Video modelling is an easy-to-use behaviour modification technique that uses videotaped rather than 'live' scenarios for the child to observe, concentrating the focus of attention for the child with autism and creating a highly effective stimulus for learning. Video Modelling and Behaviour Analysis provides a practical introduction to the technique, its objectives, strategies for use and evidence of its success. Illustrative case examples are supported by detailed diagrams and photographs, with clear, accessible explanations. Video Modelling and Behaviour Analysis will be a welcome addition to the practical literature on autism interventions for parents of autistic children and the professionals working with them.
