Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mathematical Theory of Tone Systems patterns a unified theory defining the tone system in functional terms based on the principles and forms of uncertainty theory. This title uses geometrical nets and other measures to study all classes of used and theoretical tone systems, from Pythagorean tuning to superparticular pentatonics. Hundreds of examples of past and prevalent tone systems are featured. Topics include Fuzziness and Sonance, Wavelets and Nonspecificity, Pitch Granulation and Ambiguity, Equal Temperaments, Mean Tone Systems. Well Tempered Systems, Ptolemy Systems, and more. Appendices include extended lists of tone systems and a catalogue of historical organs with subsemitones.

Download or read book Animal Psychophysics the design and conduct of sensory experiments written by William C. Stebbins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May of 1969, the contributors to this book gathered at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for three days to talk about their work in the behavioral analysis of animal sensory function and to share their research experiences in the laboratory with particular emphasis on methodology in behavioral training, testing, and instrumentation. It was their feeling and mine as a consequence of this meeting that we had sufficient substance to justify a book which we hoped would be of interest and even of pragmatic value to any biologic or biomedical scientist whose work deals with sensory function. Clearly, there is no aspect of an organism's behavior that is not to some extent con trolled by environmental stimuli. In recent years, due in large part to technical advances in microscopy and histology and in electrophysiology, there have been several extremely informative published proceedings from conferences and symposia concerned with some of the early and very basic stages in the reception of environmental energy by the sense organs and its processing by the nervous system. Transduction at the receptor and stimulus coding by the nervous system, cell membrane changes, and the basic structure of the receptor and related tissue as seen through the electron and phase contrast microscope have received major attention, and exciting new discoveries in sen sory function and structure have been reported. Ultimately, such discoveries must be related to an intact behaving organism.

Download or read book AUDIOLOGY Diagnosis written by Ross J. Roeser and published by Thieme. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An invaluable reference for diagnosing common auditory disorders Written by the foremost authorities in the field, Audiology: Diagnosis presents the basic concepts and essential clinical information for diagnosing auditory disorders, otologic diseases, and vestibular dysfunction. The book provides a thorough review of fundamental principles of diagnosis, including the basic procedures, the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, imaging techniques, instrumentation, calibration, and more. It also covers the clinical tests essential for assessing the type and degree of hearing loss and for determining the etiological factors underlying the patient's disorder. Chapters address such important topics as ototoxicity and pharmacology in the audiology practice, and utilizing functional brain imaging and radiologic techniques. Highlights: New information on effective methods for neonatal hearing screening, assessment of vestibular disorders, the genetics of hearing loss, and recent advances in testing for auditory processing disorders in children and adults Chapter outlines to rapidly acquaint reader with topics to be discussed Pearls, pitfalls, controversial points, and special considerations providing recommendations and comments on key aspects of patient care Audiology: Diagnosis is one part of a three-volume series, which is completed by Audiology: Treatment and Audiology: Practice Management. Together these books provide audiologists and students in graduate programs with an invaluable resource for each stage of management.
Download or read book The New Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning written by Music Educators National Conference (U.S.) and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-18 with total page 1249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring chapters by the world's foremost scholars in music education and cognition, this handbook is a convenient collection of current research on music teaching and learning. This comprehensive work includes sections on arts advocacy, music and medicine, teacher education, and studio instruction, among other subjects, making it an essential reference for music education programs. The original Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning, published in 1992 with the sponsorship of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), was hailed as "a welcome addition to the literature on music education because it serves to provide definition and unity to a broad and complex field" (Choice). This new companion volume, again with the sponsorship of MENC, explores the significant changes in music and arts education that have taken place in the last decade. Notably, several chapters now incorporate insights from other fields to shed light on multi-cultural music education, gender issues in music education, and non-musical outcomes of music education. Other chapters offer practical information on maintaining musicians' health, training music teachers, and evaluating music education programs. Philosophical issues, such as musical cognition, the philosophy of research theory, curriculum, and educating musically, are also explored in relationship to policy issues. In addition to surveying the literature, each chapter considers the significance of the research and provides suggestions for future study.Covering a broad range of topics and addressing the issues of music education at all age levels, from early childhood to motivation and self-regulation, this handbook is an invaluable resource for music teachers, researchers, and scholars.
Download or read book Listening to Speech written by Steven Greenberg and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human species is largely defined by its use of spoken language, so integral is speech communication to behavior and social interaction. Despite its importance in everyday life, comparatively little is known about the auditory mechanisms that underlie the ability to understand language. The current volume examines the perception and processing of speech from the perspective of the hearing system. The chapters in this book describe a comprehensive set of approaches to the scientific study of speech and hearing, ranging from anatomy and physiology, to psychophysics and perception, and computational modeling. The auditory basis of speech is examined within a biological and an evolutionary context, and its relevance to applied domains such as communication disorders and speech technology discussed in detail. This volume will be of interest to scientists, engineers, and clinicians whose professional work pertains to any aspect of spoken language or hearing science.
