Book Restoration Following Sediment Addition in a Southern California Salt Marsh

This book was released on 2022 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Despite the many ecosystem services they provide, salt marsh habitats have been extensively lost and degraded through anthropogenic activities over the past century. Furthermore, predicted future rates of sea-level rise threaten to eliminate much of the still intact salt marshes, especially in urbanized areas. Techniques to conserve salt marshes in the face of sea-level rise include facilitating the upland migration of the intertidal plant community or adjusting elevation through sediment addition. At this time, however, best practices for implementing these strategies remain poorly understood. In the studies presented here, I quantified the constraints of seed availability and soil salinity on the plant colonization of a southern California salt marsh sediment addition site using a seedling emergence experiment. I also examined the effects of several planting methods (proximity to ponds, plug spacing, and plug species composition) on the assisted upland migration of a low marsh plant species (Spartina foliosa). Finally, I measured the effects of planting on the soil conditions and macrofauna communities over 1 year. Seed bank samples from the sediment addition site had few seedlings emerge compared to natural marsh samples, and seawater irrigation increased mortality of emerged seedlings, pointing to a combination of seed supply and soil salinity limiting the recolonization of plants to the site. Planting Spartina foliosa plugs in clusters with 20 cm spacing near tidal ponds increased S. foliosa survival and growth above its natural elevation range. However, planting showed little effect on the soil conditions and macrofauna assemblage of the sediment addition site after 1 year. The results presented here suggest that salt marsh restoration sites near seed sources can have limited seed availability, and assessments of seed availability can help determine the necessity of active planting. Additionally, these results demonstrate that assisting the upland migration of Spartina foliosa with sea-level rise may be accomplished through strategic planting methods such as planting near ponds. However, the effects of active planting on the restoration trajectory of soil conditions and macrofauna communities may take longer than 1 year to manifest.
