Book The Effects of Picture Exchange Communication System Training on the Communication Behaviors of Young Children with Autism Or Severe Language Disabilities

Download or read book The Effects of Picture Exchange Communication System Training on the Communication Behaviors of Young Children with Autism Or Severe Language Disabilities written by Angela Welch and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Difficulties with communication, including impaired oral language and social relationships, are diagnostic characteristics of autism (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). The Picture Exchange Communication System was developed as an alternative for those with limited verbal skills, including people with autism, to communicate (Bondy & Frost 1994, 2001, 2002). Previous research has demonstrated its effectiveness with preschool children (Charlop-Christy, Carpenter, Loc, Leblanc, & Kellet, 2002; Frea, Arnold, & Vittimberga, 2001; Ganz, Parker, & Benson, 2009; Ganz & Simpson, 2004; Jurgens, Anderson, & Moore, 2009). A changing criterion design was used to examine the effects of PECS training on three young children with disabilities who were non-verbal and attended a preschool classroom. Two out of three of the children emitted independent picture exchanges in Phase 1 post-training probes. Time allowed for one participant to begin Phase 2 training, but he did not demonstrate independent picture exchanges. In contrast to previous research, the participants in this study failed to reach mastery due to several possible confounding variables. Limitations, directions for future research, and implications for practitioners will be discussed.

Book The Impact of the Picture Exchange System on Reducing Challenging Behaviors During Transition Periods

Download or read book The Impact of the Picture Exchange System on Reducing Challenging Behaviors During Transition Periods written by Jami Svor and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to determine if using the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) with a 14 year old autistic boy will reduce challenging behaviors when transitioning through activities. Specifically, the study will be conducted with one 14 year old boy who has difficulty with transitioning between activities without exhibiting behaviors. The study aims to determine whether or not implementing PECS as well as a visual schedule and providing highly rewarding activities between transitions of classes will reduce behaviors. Those behaviors include both emotional (crying) and verbal behaviors (noncompliance, blaming others, inappropriate words or phrases). Interviewing parents and previous teachers on the child's performance as well as observations by the researcher will provide insight as to the effectiveness of this method.

Book The Picture Exchange Communication System at Home

Download or read book The Picture Exchange Communication System at Home written by Meghan Nilsen and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is an AAC often used with student diagnosed with ASD to supplement an existing mode of communication or provide a functional mode of communication where none exists or is limited. This quantitative study sought to determine if students with ASD were generalizing the communicative skills learned through the program, form school to home. Parents of children identified as currently using the PECS program in school, were surveyed. The results of this study were inconclusive due to several limitations, however educational implications were gathered and the information obtained can be used for further research.

Book The Picture Exchange Communication System

Download or read book The Picture Exchange Communication System written by Carmen Jonaitis and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is an augmentative and alternative system (AAC) used to improve and increase communication for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disorders. Research addressing the efficacy of this system is increasing; however, there is limited information published that evaluates the picture type used for PECS instruction. A single-subject alternating treatments design was used to examine the role of iconicity, or how closely a symbol resembles its referent, in the acquisition of picture discrimination in the third phase of PECS. The purpose of this study was to compare how well children were able to discriminate pictures with high iconicity versus pictures of low iconicity in Phase 3 of PECS. Four preschool children from 22-36 months of age with ASD or an Early Childhood Developmental Delay participated in the study. The results indicate that there was minimal difference in picture discrimination between the two picture types. Children learn to discriminate equally well with pictures of low or high iconicity in the third phase of PECS instruction.

Book The Effects of Mother implemented Picture Exchange Communication System Training on Spontaneous Communicative Behaviors of Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book The Effects of Mother implemented Picture Exchange Communication System Training on Spontaneous Communicative Behaviors of Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Ju Hee Park and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The current study examined whether mothers could be taught to implement the picture exchange communication system (PECS) training with their child and investigated the effects of the mother-implemented PECS training on the spontaneous communication of young children with autism spectrum disorders. Three mothers were trained to teach their child PECS Phases 1 through 3B and subsequently were asked to train their child to use PECS as a way of requesting a preferred item or activity. Results on mother's accuracy of implementing PECS training showed that all three mothers taught their child PECS with high integrity. A changing criterion design was used to demonstrate the effects of mother-implemented PECS training on children. Results indicated that all three children successfully acquired independent picture exchanges along with themother-implemented PECS training. Moreover, not only did all three children generalize PECS skills to an untrained communication partner, they also maintained the acquired skills over one month. Word vocalizations increased for one child, though no or limited improvement was observed for the other two. These findings extend the existing evidence on PECS by training mothers as primary implementers of PECS training and provide practitioners with insight into the feasibility and necessity of parent-implemented PECS training.
