Book Effects of Attitudes and Motivation on Willingness to Communicate

Download or read book Effects of Attitudes and Motivation on Willingness to Communicate written by Alexandra Chiang and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of speaking a second language is now irrefutable with rapid 20th century globalization. Subsequently, willingness to communicate (WTC), a theoretical precursor to attaining communicative competency, has also gained widespread attention. In the early 2000s, Taiwan's Ministry of Education (MOE) adjusted the National curriculum to begin English education in grade school. Soon after the announcement, private schools nationwide started introducing 9 year bilingual educational tracks from lower to middle school. As more and more parents saw the benefits of learning a second language, school aged children quickly became one of the largest language learning demographic in Taiwan. Nonetheless, despite the shift in demand, most local studies still target university students. Noting such knowledge gap, this study focuses on young bilingual learners that study in a EFL environment. Utilizing a combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis processes, this study aims to (a) examine correlations between attitudes and WTC for both Chinese (L1) and English (L2); and (b) to evaluate how their WTC and communicative habits compare across different situational contexts in scenarios among peers and with adults in the classroom. The quantitative part 1 of the study was conducted during the Spring of 2017 and informs half of the thesis (Chiang, 2019). Part 1was first presented in 2019 at The Asian Conference on Language Learning on May 17, 2019 and published in their 2019 conference proceedings. In the fall of 2017, a 36 question 4 point-Likert survey was given to 58 seventh grade students at a private Elementary and Middle School in Northern Taiwan; results indicate that L1 WTC is more determined by trait influences while L2 WTC is comparably more malleable and influenced by education (attitude has a moderate positive correlation to WTC in L2 but not in L1). Additionally, participants are more WTC in task-based activities in L2, which is consistent with findings on how students are generally more WTC in classes taught in L2 at the private school, regardless of their trait dispositions. This thesis heavily references part 1 of the study and builds upon its findings with a follow up qualitative interview study (part 2). Elaborating on Taiwanese bilingual EFL students' communicative habits, the qualitative interviews explains that L1 WTC is more trait based because students are expected to stay quiet during class and defer communication to social settings where trait dispositions largely determines their L1 WTC. L2 WTC on the other hand, is more encouraged in the classroom and more influenced by affective reasons relating to culture, convenience, and individual fluency. Informed with the above, this paper will provide insights to ways educators can better promote young learners' WTC in the classroom. Furthermore, findings will also reveal differences in WTC across various contexts such as with teachers vs. peers or in different academic vs. social constructs. Finally, teaching techniques will be discussed in response to key findings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of students in higher education has expanded dramatically in recent years, but funding has not kept pace with this growth. The result is less contact time for lecturers and their students, and corresponding worries about how the quality of teaching and learning can be improved. Peer tutoring is one method which is growing in popularity, and has already proved successful in a number of countries. This book provides an introduction to the methods and practice of peer tutoring focusing on how to set up schemes and how to cope with common problems. It discusses the theory behind this form of learning and the beneficial effects associated with it. Summaries are included at the end of each chapter.

Book Teacher Support and Intrinsic Motivation

Download or read book Teacher Support and Intrinsic Motivation written by Meng-Te Hung and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little is known about the mechanisms underlying the relation between perceived teacher emotional support and intrinsic motivation to learn English. The primary purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional correlation study was to examine the mediating effects of foreign language enjoyment, anxiety, and self-efficacy on the relationship between Chinese college students’ perceptions of teacher emotional caring and intrinsic motivation in EFL classrooms. Undergraduates (N = 1,464) enrolled in six public four-year universities in mainland China completed five student self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression-based path analysis with the PROCESS macros for SPSS and utilizing the Amos program version 26.0 for structural equation modeling (SEM) with maximum likelihood method. Five specific indirect effects of emotional support from teachers on intrinsic motivation to learn English were tested. Specifically, the five indirect effects (or mediating) pathways were hypothesized as: (1) teacher emotional support to enjoyment to intrinsic motivation, (2) teacher emotional support to anxiety to intrinsic motivation, (3) teacher emotional support to self-efficacy to intrinsic motivation, (4) teacher emotional support to enjoyment to self-efficacy to intrinsic motivation, and (5) teacher emotional support to anxiety to self-efficacy to intrinsic motivation. Results of mediation analyses revealed that foreign language enjoyment and anxiety independently mediated the relationship between teacher emotional support and intrinsic motivation to learn English. However, self-efficacy did not independently mediate the effect of teacher emotional caring on intrinsic motivation. Further, there was evidence of mediating pathways from teacher emotional support to intrinsic motivation through enjoyment then to self-efficacy as well as anxiety then to self-efficacy. Additionally, when estimating the mediation model, the results are the same whether SEM or an OLS regression is used. The findings of the present research make a contribution to the SLA motivation literature and add additional support for the Self-Determination Theory (SDT). I discuss implications and limitations as well as recommendations for future search.

Book The Roles of Social Media in Education Affective Behavioral and Cognitive Dimensions

Download or read book The Roles of Social Media in Education Affective Behavioral and Cognitive Dimensions written by Hung Phu Bui and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-24 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: technologies, in education. A large body of research has attempted to measure the extent to which social media change human communication. In education, researchers and educators have employed social media to increase students’ engagement inside and outside the classroom. They have been exploring the effects of the use of social media on the learning outcome, and learners’ beliefs and experiences. However, some of their endeavors are inconclusive. As the effects of social media in education are context-sensitive, research results reflecting different contexts around the world will contribute to the literature on social media and education. Student engagement in learning, a growing interest in educational research, is widely believed to contribute to the success of learning. The contemporary literature shows that students can engage in learning affectively, behaviorally, and cognitively. Recent studies are also interested in using technology to mediate students’ social and metacognitive engagement in learning. As student engagement is a multidimensional area, interdisciplinary studies have recently expanded their literature. The use of social media to increase student engagement in learning remains underexplored.

Book Effects of Perceived Self efficacy Social Support and Adjustment to College on the Health promoting Behaviors of Chinese Taiwanese Internationl Students

Download or read book Effects of Perceived Self efficacy Social Support and Adjustment to College on the Health promoting Behaviors of Chinese Taiwanese Internationl Students written by Yun Ying K. Hung and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most chronic diseases originate in early life and young adulthood and can be qualified as lifestyle diseases. The health-promoting behaviors of young adults are critically linked to the health status they can expect to have as older adults. Of the rapidly growing numbers of international students in the United States, Asian students comprise the largest proportion, with the majority of this group coming from China or Taiwan. This study aims to investigate the health-promoting behaviors and health needs of this specific group of international students. Even as they work to adjust to a foreign culture, society, and language, these students must also face the challenges of undertaking a new academic program. It is essential that they develop and practice health-promoting behaviors to promote and enhance their well-being, as well as to prevent the risks of developing a chronic illness. Perceived self-efficacy and social support are central predictors for adjustment to college and for health-promoting behaviors in college student populations. Although the influence of adjustment to college on students' academic performance and psychological health has been demonstrated, little is known regarding the relationship between adjustment to college and health-promoting behaviors in Chinese/Taiwanese international students. Therefore, this study sought to examine the effects of perceived self-efficacy and social support on health-promoting behaviors in Chinese/Taiwanese international students as mediated by their adjustment to college. A cross-sectional, descriptive correlational research design was used to test the study hypotheses. A convenience sample of 103 Chinese/Taiwanese students at a large public university in the Midwest completed questionnaires containing: the Generalized Self-efficacy Scale, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire, the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II, and the Demographic Data Questionnaire. The study model was tested using Baron and Kenney's procedures for mediation testing. The results from the study revealed that the effects of perceived self-efficacy and perceived social support on health-promoting behaviors were partially mediated through the level of adjustment to college. The mediator variable, adjustment to college, revealed a statistically significant ability to predict the students' health-promoting behaviors (Sobel = 3.0, p = 0.003; Sobel = 2.8, p = 0.005). These findings suggest that the effects of self-efficacy and social support on health-promoting behaviors in Chinese/Taiwanese international students may be mediated through their adjustment to college. Further research on larger and more diverse samples of international students is needed. However, if supported by future studies, these findings suggest that international students' level of adjustment to college plays a very important role in their health-promoting behaviors.
