Book The Effect of Strategy Instruction on Reading Comprehension Performance

Download or read book The Effect of Strategy Instruction on Reading Comprehension Performance written by Chiu Bin Neo and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to discover the effect of strategy instruction on the reading comprehension performance and strategy knowledge of a sixth grade student in Singapore. The sample was a 13-year-old male student with a reading disability. The student had good decoding skills but was weak in comprehension. The study assessed strengths and weaknesses in the student's reading comprehension and his knowledge and use of reading strategies. Comprehension performance was assessed using a standardized comprehension pretest and a posttest and through tasks on passages from the Qualitative Reading Inventory-4. Observations made during the Qualitative Reading Inventory-4 assessments provided information about the student's use of strategies. The student's knowledge of strategies was measured through interviews and through a questionnaire, the Metacomprehension Strategy Index. One-on-one instruction of selected strategies was provided through fifteen 90-minute sessions of after-school tutoring. The study found that instruction of strategies improved the student's comprehension performance and increased his knowledge about strategy use.

Book The Effect of Strategy Instruction on Reading Comprehension and Students Awareness of Reading Strategies

Download or read book The Effect of Strategy Instruction on Reading Comprehension and Students Awareness of Reading Strategies written by Hayat Farouk Shouman and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading comprehension is mainly the product of three factors: The text, the read er's background knowledge, and strategies used to circumvent any comprehension f ailures. However, not all primary students discover reading strategies and apply strategic processes when confronting texts that are challenging to comprehend. Results of previous research reveal that explicit reading strategy instruction i s a feasible tool for teaching students how to apply them successfully. The aim of this study was to examine the relative effect of Reciprocal Teaching strategy instruction and Question-Answer Relationships in improving EFL students ' reading comprehension, to investigate their relative role in improving EFL stu dents' awareness of reading strategies( Global, Problem Solving, and Support rea ding strategies), and to examine the role of reading strategies awareness in rea ding comprehension. The participants in this intervention were 66 sixth grade mi ddle class students from the Hariri High School II. Three sections were assigned into two experimental groups and one control group. The study used a pre-test p ost test control group quasi-experimental design. A Reading Comprehension Test w as administered prior to and after instruction in order to evaluate the efficacy of the intervention. Students' awareness of reading strategies was measured usi ng The Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS). Descriptive statistics (frequencies, means, and standard deviations), multiple multivariate analyses of co-variance (MANCOVA) tests, and a linear regression test were conducted to answer the quest ions raised in the study. The results revealed that Reciprocal Teaching and Question-Answer Relationships had a significant effect in improving students' reading comprehension. However, the results did not indicate a statistically significant role of these reading s trategies in improving students' awareness of reading strategies. Moreover, the results did not reveal a significant role of the awareness of these strategies i n promoting reading comprehension.

Book Exploring the Use of Effective Learning Strategies to Increase Students Reading Comprehension and Test Taking Skills

Download or read book Exploring the Use of Effective Learning Strategies to Increase Students Reading Comprehension and Test Taking Skills written by Nancy Radojevic and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of providing students with explicit instruction in how to use a repertoire of reading comprehension strategies and test taking skills when reading and responding to three types of questions (direct, inferential, critical). Specifically, the study examined whether providing students with a "model" of how to read and respond to the text and to the comprehension questions improved their reading comprehension relative to providing them with implicit instruction on reading comprehension strategies and test taking skills. Students' reading comprehension and test taking performance scores were compared as a function of instructional condition. Students from 2 grade 8 classes participated in this study. The reading component of the Canadian Achievement Tests, Third Edition (CAT/3) was used to identify students' level of reading comprehension prior to the formal instructional sessions. Students received either explicit instruction, which involved modelling, or implicit instruction, which consisted of review and discussion of the strategies to be used. Comprehension was measured through the administration of formative tests after each instructional session. The formative tests consisted of reading comprehension questions pertaining to a specific form of text (narrative, informational, graphic). In addition, students completed 3 summative tests and a delayed comprehension test which consisted of the alternative version of the CAT/3 standardized reading assessment. These data served as a posttest measure to determine whether students had shown an improvement in their reading comprehension skills as a result of the program delivery. There were significant differences in students' Canadian Achievement Test performance scores prior to the onset of the study. Students in the implicit group attained significantly higher comprehension scores than did students in the explicit group. The results from the program sessions indicated no significant differences in reading comprehension between the implicit and explicit conditions, with the exception of the 6th session involving the reading and interpreting of graphic text. Students in the explicit group performed significantly better when reading and interpreting graphic text than those in the implicit group. No significant differences were evident between the two study conditions across the three summative tests. Upon completion of the study, the results from the Canadian Achievement Test indicated no significant differences in performance between the two study conditions. The findings from this study reveal the effectiveness of providing students with explicit strategy instruction when reading and responding to various forms of text. Modelling the appropriate reading comprehension strategies and test taking skills enabled students to apply the same thought processes to their own independent work. This form of instruction enabled students in the explicit group to improve in their abilities to comprehend and respond to text and therefore should be incorporated as an effective form of classroom teaching.

Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Book Handbook of Reading Research Volume II

Download or read book Handbook of Reading Research Volume II written by Rebecca Barr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 1108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive overview of important contemporary issues in the field of reading research from the mid 1980s to mid 1990s, this well-received volume offers readers an examination of literacy through a variety of lenses--some permitting microscopic views and others panoramic views. A veritable "who's who" of specialists in the field, chapter authors cover current methodology, as well as cumulative research-based knowledge. Because it deals with society and literacy, the first section provides the broadest possible view of literacy. The second section defines the range of activities culturally determined to be a part of the enterprise known as literacy. The third focuses on the processes that individuals engage in when they perform the act of reading. The fourth section visits the environment in which the knowledge that comprises literacy is passed on from one generation to the next. The last section, an epilogue to the whole enterprise of reading research, provides apt philosophical reflection.
