Book excerpt: Impact of intergenerational relationships on levels of similarity of attitudes toward old people among grandparents and their grandchildren was studied. The purpose of this three-generation family study was to identify traits of models and observers related to the socialization of attitudes toward old people. Special emphasis was placed on the development of positive, rather than negative, attitudes. One hundred and fifteen grandparents in programs primarily for older adults in Johnson County, Kansas, and Jackson County, Missouri, along with 144 of their adult children and 207 of their grandchildren, voluntarily completed and returned by mail anonymous questionnaires appropriate for their generations. For the 180 family units in which all three generations were represented, a random selection of 40% was drawn by generations-grandparent, parent, and grandchild in that order--and produced a sample of 72 three-generation family units. Information was collected from each generation on a number of predictor variables recurrent in 30 years of research. Variables were assigned to five predetermined sets of traits appropriate to the social learning framework of modeling. Three sets were traits of grandparents as models of attitudes: Status, Prestige, and Competence Traits. The other two sets were Traits of Grandchildren as Observers and of Parents-as-Mediators. The criterion variable was a continuum of differences in attitudes of grandparents and grandchildren calculated by subtracting the scores of each grandchild on the Kogan Attitudes Toward Old People Scale from that of his/her grandparent. Levels of similarity of attitudes among grandparents and grandchildren were regressed against the sets of traits of models and observers in a series of stepwise multiple regression analyses. Experimental hypotheses based on similar versus dissimilar attitudes of grandparents and their grandchildren were rejected with one exception. When differences in attitudes were negative, similarity was associated with positive attitudes of grandchildren toward old people, and dissimilarity of attitudes among grandparents and their grandchildren was related to negative attitudes of grandchildren. Results indicated an association between traits related to family "closeness," such as frequent contact and intimacy between younger and older family members, and positive attitudes among grandchildren toward old people.
