Book The Effect of Lower Body Strength Training on Throwing Velocity in Baseball

Download or read book The Effect of Lower Body Strength Training on Throwing Velocity in Baseball written by Michael Brian Benke and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Introduction: Limited research has been found examining the effects of lower body training on throwing velocity. Most studies have focused on training the upper part of the body, neglecting the impact the lower body has on the throwing motion. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of lower body training on throwing velocity when combined with short and long toss throwing programs. Methods: Twenty Four members of a collegiate baseball team were placed into 4 groups according to their pre-test throwing velocity and participated in a 5-week throwing and training program. Two of the groups performed short toss (ST and STWT), with one short toss group also involved in weight training exercises. The other two groups threw long toss (LT and LTWT) and one of those groups participated in the weight training program. Results: Twenty-two participants completed the five-week training protocol and were considered in data analysis. There was no significant interaction between time (pre vs. post) and group, F(2, 18)=0.611, p>.05. There were no significant main effects for time (pre to post), F(1, 18)=0.496, p>.05 or group (LT, ST, LTWT, STWT), F(2, 18)=.061, p>.05. This five week strength training and throwing program had no effect on throwing velocity"--Abstract.

Book The Effect of an In season Strength Training Program on Throwing Velocity of High School Baseball Players

Download or read book The Effect of an In season Strength Training Program on Throwing Velocity of High School Baseball Players written by Nathan Allen Cermak and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of an in-season strength-training program on throwing velocity. Twenty-one baseball players, mean # SD age, height, and weight of 16.7 # 1.2 yr., 71.1 # 3.1 in., and 168.1 # 29.9 lb, respectively, were assigned to a control or experimental group. Pre-test and post-test throwing velocities were measured with a radar gun. The experimental group participated in a strength-training program three time a week for six weeks. Data was analyzed with an ANOVA. There was no significant interaction between the experitmental group (n=10) (pre-test) 68.3 mph, post-test 69.6 mph) and the control group (n=8) (pre-test 69.3 mph, post-test 69.6 mph) over time. There was no main effect (n=18) for time; pre-test vs. post-test velocities 68.7 mph and 69.6 mph, respectively, or for group; control vs. experimental. It can be concluded that a six-week strength-training program has no effect on throwing velocity.

Book The Effects of Postural Restoration Techniques on Strength Power and Flexibility in Collegiate Baseball Players

Download or read book The Effects of Postural Restoration Techniques on Strength Power and Flexibility in Collegiate Baseball Players written by Joseph R. Hudson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a 6-week Postural Restoration (PRI) based strength training protocol versus a 6-week control group on strength, power, and flexibility in collegiate baseball players. Collegiate baseball players (N = 28; 20.36 ± 1.35) at a Division III college in New England participated in this study. Participants were divided into a treatment group (n = 15) and a control (n = 13) group. Pretesting was conducted for an estimated 1-repetition max Front Squat (strength), a bilateral vertical jump (power), and glenohumeral (GH) and femoroacetabular (FA) range of motion (flexibility) measurements. Twelve strength training sessions were conducted for both groups with the treatment group performing pre-exercise PRI based exercises as well as additional PRI based exercises during the training session. Posttesting was completed following the 12 training sessions. Postural Restoration techniques were found to have no statistically significant effect on strength and power when compared to a standard 6-week strength training protocol. Although not statistically significant, Postural Restoration techniques exhibited an additional 1.7% increase in strength measurements when compared to a standard strength training protocol. A significant interaction exists between the PRI-treatment group vs the control group with respect to Right Arm Internal Rotation measurements. The 1.7% increase in the treatment group could be from improvements in hip and trunk strength, posture and core control when bracing a loaded spine during the front sguat exercise. Primary improvements in Right Arm Internal Rotation measurements may be a result of a primary right hand dominant population in a time of year where throwing adaptations cannot be monitored. PRI-based protocols were hypothesized to produce greater improvements in strength, power, and flexibility to a greater extent in comparison to the strength training-control group following the six-week training program, there were no indications of a more favorable prescription method. Thus, both protocols could provide egual benefit to improving strength, power, and flexibility with respect to training collegiate baseball players during the preseason training months.

Book The Acute Effects of a Rotational Medicine Ball Throw Exercise on Baseball Pitching Biomechanics

Download or read book The Acute Effects of a Rotational Medicine Ball Throw Exercise on Baseball Pitching Biomechanics written by Avery Pierce Rogers Sullivan and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to throw at higher velocities with proper mechanics is very advantageous for baseball pitchers to increase performance and decrease injury risk. Pitching utilizes the movement of energy through the kinetic chain, wherein momentum is generated by the proximal core segments of the body and transferred to the distal segments of the throwing shoulder and elbow to produce ball velocity. Medicine ball throws (MBT) have been used as a training method for rotational throwing and striking athletes to improve core strength and power. Rotational MBT are sport-specific for baseball pitching because of the similar explosive sequential muscle activation of the pelvis, torso, and arms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a side-rotational MBT exercise on pitching biomechanics and ball velocity when performed immediately prior to pitching as a method of post-activation potentiation (PAP). High school, college, and professional aged pitchers (n = 6, age 19.5 ± 3.6 years) were randomly assigned to MBT and control (CON) groups. Both groups threw five pre-trial and five post-trial maximal effort fastballs, with the MBT group performing one set of six side-rotational MBT at maximum effort in between the pre and post-trials while the CON group rested. All pitching trials were recorded by a three-dimensional motion capture system at 240 Hz, from which five temporal, four kinematic, and three kinetic variables were calculated. A 2 x 2 mixed ANOVA for each dependent variable was used for comparisons between and within groups. There were significant interactions between groups and time for peak trunk rotational velocity (p = .049), peak elbow extension velocity (p = .014), and maximum external rotation torque (p = .042). These results may warrant further research into MBT as a method for warming up and eliciting a PAP response for pitching.
