Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of four school-based programs on student academic performance at an early college high school in northeastern North Carolina. The four school-based intervention programs that were examined in this study are as follows: mandatory Study Hall for all students in Grades 9-13, an ACT/SAT Prep course for students in Grade 11, a College Success course for all students in Grades 9-13 who earn a D or F grade in a college course which focuses on college prep skills for students, and an Advisory Period for all students in grades 9-13. Standardized test results were analyzed after the school based intervention programs had been implemented at the school in the study to determine the impact of these four interventions. The national assessment that was used to measure effectiveness was the American College Testing (ACT) assessment. All four programs were designed to help increase student achievement and provide students with skills to be successful during high school and college upon graduating from high school as measured by state and national assessments. The school's performance grading indicators were evaluated using the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 academic year school data to determine the overall effectiveness of the four school-based intervention programs. The study concluded that there were gains in several areas with the interventions at the school in the study. There were some circumstances beyond the control of the intervention programs, which would have been a major factor in determining overall program effectiveness

Book excerpt: To address concerns about low graduation rates and a lack of workforce readiness, states and districts have been experimenting with different models of high school reform. One of the most popular models has been the Early College High School (ECHS) model, small schools that blur the line between high school and college. Since 2002, over 200 ECHSs have been created under the auspices of the Early College High School Initiative, which is primarily funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. North Carolina has the largest concentration, with over 70 ECHSs across the state. The purpose of this study is to rigorously examine the implementation and impact of the Early College High School model in North Carolina. This study is the first to utilize a longitudinal experimental design to assess the impact of the ECHS model on student outcomes. The study has three main goals: (1) Determine the impact of the model on selected student outcomes; (2) Determine the extent to which impacts differ by student characteristics; and (3) Examine the implementation of the model by site and the extent to which variation in specific model components is associated with impacts. Nineteen ECHS in North Carolina are participating in the study. Early results from this study show that the Early College High School model is having a positive impact on many outcomes associated with remaining in school and becoming ready for college. These results suggest that the ECHS is making substantial progress towards its goal of graduating more students who are ready for college and work. Although these findings are very positive, they are restricted to the model as implemented in North Carolina. Other early colleges around the country may not follow the same design principles and may not receive the same level of assistance in implementation as the schools in North Carolina; as a result, their results may differ. Book excerpt: Early college high schools were developed as a partnership between school districts and colleges to provide students an opportunity to earn a high school diploma concurrently with an associate’s degree or transferable college credit at little or no cost. In 2011, North Carolina New Schools implemented the Rural Innovative Initiative with the purpose of expanding college readiness and reducing dropouts by applying early college design principles and strategies into 18 existing traditional high schools in low-wealth districts. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of implementation of early college principles and strategies into traditional high schools. The study included five traditional high schools that were a part of the Rural Innovative Initiative. -- The researcher used a mixed-methods approach to conduct this study. Quantitative data were collected including graduation rates, student growth rates, and end-of-course proficiency means for each of the five traditional high schools. Teachers were surveyed to analyze their perspectives of the early college principles. Qualitative data were collected from principal interview responses to a set of predetermined interview questions. -- The three research questions addressed changes in student achievement data, teacher perspectives of the early college design principles, and principal perspectives of implementation of early college strategies. -- Data indicated that the five high schools experienced an increase in graduation rates following implementation of the early college model. Four of the five high schools also had an increase in student growth. The survey and interview data from teachers and principals indicated that the early college design principles were implemented. Findings suggest that early college strategies and design principles can be implemented in traditional high schools as a reform model.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect early college high school, in a Dallas, Texas large urban school district, on the academic performance of students in algebra I EOC, English I EOC, Biology, English II EOC, and the college readiness standards set by College Board on the PSAT. If a relationship existed, this study sought to determine students who participate in early college high school will have a higher success rate on the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) and PSAT. In the state of Texas, state leaders were committed in closing the achievement gap and increase the number of minority students entering post-secondary institution. In 2006, Texas’ first early college high school was established with the sole purpose to create an innovative high school that allows students least likely to attend college an opportunity to earn a high school diploma and up to 60 college credit hours. The researcher examined STAAR EOC scores in 2015–2016, and 2016 PSAT results compared to students in a traditional high school. The scores were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA. Overall, the strength of the relationship between ECHS and STAAR was significant. The relationship between ECHS and PSAT was also significant. The results of the study would suggest that the relationship of the early college high school program on student academic performance and PSAT total score was significant.

Book excerpt: Research indicated that many students entering middle and high school read below grade level. This quantitative study attempted to address the problem of low-income African American students from northeast Louisiana entering ninth grade with low reading skills. The purpose of this ex post facto study was to investigate the effects of a Response to Intervention (RtI) Tier 2 literacy intervention on the academic achievement of ninth grade students reading below grade level. The research was grounded in Bloom's mastery learning theory and Dewey's child-centered learning theory. The research question was whether students that completed the literacy intervention performed better on the ninth grade state-mandated assessment than students who did not receive the intervention. The secondary data used in this ex post facto study were the ninth grade iLEAP ELA (integrated Louisiana Educational Assessment Program) scores as measures for the dependent variable. Students who completed the literacy intervention did not score significantly higher on the iLEAP ELA. These results indicated that the intervention that was evaluated in this study was not effective with the population involved in this research. The findings point to the need for alternative literacy interventions that may have to be customized for student populations with different remediation needs.

Book excerpt: This paper addresses methodological issues arising from an experimental study of North Carolina's Early College High School Initiative, a four-year longitudinal experimental study funded by Institute for Education Sciences. North Carolina implemented the Early College High School (ECHS) Initiative in response to low high school graduation rates. The goal of the initiative is to increase the number of students graduating from high school and who continue on and succeed in college. The study has three main goals: (1) Determine the impact of the model on selected student outcomes, including course-taking patterns, achievement, attitudes, and dropout and leaving rates; (2) Determine the extent to which outcomes differ by student characteristics; and (3) Examine the implementation of the model and the extent to which specific model components are associated with positive outcomes. Schools participating in the study identify an eligible pool of student applicants. The research team then randomly assigns students to either the treatment group (attending the ECHS) or the control group (business as usual). The outcomes for students in the two groups are then tracked and compared. The study follows an intent-to-treat model in that once a student is assigned to ECHS, he or she remains in the treatment group regardless of whether he or she ends up enrolling in ECHS, or leaves ECHS. Findings suggest that ECHS has the same impact on pass-rates for the Always-takers as the traditional high school. Where the ECHS are making difference is by increasing the number of students who are taking these courses. (Contains 5 figures, 6 tables and 4 footnotes.).

Book excerpt: Students entering high school in 9th grade face a formidable challenge. The transition to high school from 8th grade brings with it increased risks for all students. For example, students in 9th grade are anywhere from three to five times more likely to fail a class than students in any other grade. Similarly, ninth grade retention rates are higher than in any other grade. More importantly, research indicates that 70 to 80 percent of students failing in 9th grade will eventually dropout of high school. Early College High Schools (ECHS) are a new model merging high school and college designed to increase the number of students who graduate from high school and enroll and succeed in college. This paper presents results from a longitudinal, experimental study of ECHS, tracking students from 9th grade through graduation from high school and enrollment in college. This paper will examine impacts of the ECHS model on "underprepared" students, defined as those students who did not pass the 8th grade state exams in either or both reading and math. "Prepared" students, on the other hand, are those passing both exams. In this paper, the authors report on the impact of the model on the performance gaps between underprepared and prepared students from 9th-11th grades. This paper addresses the following specific research questions: (1) Are underprepared students more likely to be from traditionally underrepresented groups such as first generation, minority and free/reduced price lunch students?; (2) What is the impact of the ECHS model on these students' academic performance?; and (3) How does that impact compare to the impact on students who are prepared? This study focuses on ECHSs as implemented in North Carolina. North Carolina has the largest concentration of ECHSs in the country, with over 70 across the state; all managed by the same entity, the North Carolina New Schools. The 19 schools that are a part of this study are geographically distributed throughout the state; they include schools in rural and urban areas, schools with predominantly white populations and schools with predominantly African American populations. Results from this experimental study show that it is possible for schools to have an impact on students entering high school at-risk for academic failure and dropout. These data suggest to us that the reduction or elimination of performance gaps in the early college is a product of a purposeful implementation of a high quality learning environment with high expectations, rigorous courses and instruction, positive relationships, extensive student support, and teachers taking responsibility for student learning. Book excerpt: The researcher's purpose was to determine the effectiveness of the Responsible Discipline and IMPACT transition models on the behaviors and attitudes of ninth grade students in a large urban high school. The researcher addressed the questions: 1) To what extent are behaviors of ninth grade students similar prior to and after participation in the RCM and IMPACT programs? 2) To what extent are attitudes of ninth grade students similar prior to and after participation in the RCM and IMPACT programs? The researcher analyzed how the RCM and IMPACT programs lowered suspensions of ninth grade students. The researcher found that student attitudes about the school, teachers and other students compared positively during the first five-week interval with national and local studies. Of notice are student responses to the first five questions about their feelings about their school, their teachers and their peers. In respect to student suspensions, although data show a decline in the number of student suspensions between year one and two prior to the implementation RCM, ninth grade student suspensions showed a remarkable decrease (83%) from the semester prior to when the RCM program was not used. After review of student response data and the out-of-school suspension data, the researcher concludes that an early intervention program which starts prior to the first day of school for ninth grade students has positive effect on students' attitudes and behaviors.

Book excerpt: Middle school may present the last opportunity to identify struggling students and help them get on track to succeed in school. This study investigated the effects of a study hall intervention program on the academic achievement and promotion ceremony participation rates of at-risk eighth-grade students. Forty at-risk eighth-grade students who participated in a study hall intervention program during the 2015–2016 school year were compared with 51 at-risk eighth-grade students who did not participate in a study hall intervention program during the 2014–2015 school year. A chi-square test of independence was conducted on the promotion ceremony participation rates of both groups to determine if there was a significant difference in the distribution of promotion ceremony participation rates. An independent t-test was conducted on the cumulative grade point averages (GPA) for both groups to determine if there was a significant difference in student achievement. Through statistical analysis, this author found that there was a significant difference in both promotion participation rates and GPA. The results suggest that a study hall intervention program implemented early in the year may be an effective intervention for increasing the promotion ceremony participation rates and academic achievement of at-risk eighth-grade students.
