Book excerpt: This study looked at the effects of a 12-week psychoeducation "Sunday School" course on general mental health issues on help seeking attitudes among Chinese American members of a large, dominantly Chinese American church. When compared to other Sunday School classes, and controlling for pre-course attitudes, the psychoeducation course was associated with more favorable attitudes toward mental health help seeking at the completion of the course. No difference was found between Sunday School courses in their impact on reported likelihood to seek pastoral or professional mental health help for oneself or to recommend it to others. At baseline, this study found that age, spirituality, and Asian values related to recommending that others seek help. Older participants were more likely to recommend that others seek pastoral and professional help. Spirituality was positively correlated with pastoral help seeking for self and others, and higher adherence to Asian values was positively correlated with recommendation for others to seek pastoral help. There were, however, limitations to the measures and design that reduced the chances of obtaining further findings. Future directions for Asian American help seeking research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Empirical studies have shown that cultural stigma has a significant impact that lessens help-seeking behaviors related to symptoms of mental illness among Chinese Americans. The Chinese culture places great emphasis on emotional constraint and self-control (Hodges & Oei, 2007). Because of this, Chinese Americans exercise specific communicative strategies that are linked to their coping strategies in that they internalize emotions in the effort to save face (Hodges & Oei, 2007). Wellness, recovery, and self-management programs are holistic and client-driven while wellness-focused programs have been shown to improve client reported self-worth, decreased mental illness stigma, and increased overall quality of life (Metcalfe, 2007; Sterling, Esenwein, Tucker, Fricks, & Druss, 2010). The social facilitation program "Cooking with Friends" was designed as a consumer-driven program that facilitates wellness and recovery by emphasizing peer support, psychoeducation, and self-confidence building. Participants in this 18 week program completed self-report symptom inventories (Beck Depression Inventory-II, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Symptom Check List-90R Somatization Subscale), the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help scale, and program evaluations at four different time intervals. The purpose of this study was to investigate if this wellness and recovery focused program had destigmatizing effects on help-seeking attitudes in Mandarin-speaking Chinese Americans. It was hypothesized that the more sessions that participants attended, the better their attitudes toward seeking mental health services would become. Additionally it was hypothesized that the more sessions that participants attended the fewer psychological symptoms they would be likely to report. Results of a one-way ANOVA showed that there was no relationship between the number of sessions that the participants attended and their reports on these self-report inventories. However, a qualitative analysis of the program evaluations showed that there were progressive changes in mental health perspectives as well as positive changes in help-seeking attitudes over sessions. Due to the small number of participants and their inconsistent attendance at this community driven mental health program, it is suggested the help-seeking attitudes in this population be further investigated in a larger sample.

Book excerpt: The current study investigated the Portuguese-Americans’ attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help (i.e., therapy) by evaluating their acculturation and religiosity level. Twenty-two male and 49 female first-generation (being born outside of the United States) or second-generation (being born in the United States) Portuguese-Americans participated in this study. Online surveys were completed by CSU, Stanislaus students and they received experimental credit for their participation. Participants who completed the surveys in person were community members recruited from a local Portuguese bakery or a Portuguese Catholic Church and they received a $5 gift card for their participation. Both online and in-person participants completed three surveys: Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help Short-Survey (ATSPPH-S) measured attitudes towards help-seeking, the Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (SASH) measured the acculturation level of the Portuguese-American population, and the Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith (SCSORF) survey was used to measure the level of religiosity. It was hypothesized that Portuguese-Americans who reported higher levels of religiosity would have less favorable attitudes towards seeking therapy from a mental health professional as compared to those who were not as religious. It was also hypothesized that the generation level (first or second) would influence their attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help as it was associated with their level of acculturation. The researcher hypothesized that less acculturated (first-generation) Portuguese-Americans would have more negative attitudes towards seeking professional help compared to their (second-generation) who are more acculturated to the American culture. Analyses revealed that religiosity did not significantly impact attitudes towards seeking help. Results also revealed that second-generation Portuguese-Americans were more acculturated than first-generation Portuguese-Americans. Additionally, second-generation Portuguese-Americans had more favorable attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help compared to first-generation Portuguese-American.

Religiosity was also examined as a moderator between acculturation and help-seeking attitudes toward mental health. One hundred thirty one Muslim Arab Americans residing in the United States completed a survey consisting of basic demographics, the Attitudes Toward Seeking Formal Mental Health Services Instrument (ATSFMHS) to measure help-seeking attitudes toward mental health, the Psychological Acculturation Scale (PAS) to measure acculturation level, and the Sahin-Francis Scale of Attitudes toward Islam to measure religiosity. This study tested three hypotheses using hierarchical multiple regression analysis to examine a) the main effect of acculturation level and help-seeking attitudes toward mental health, b) the main effect of religiosity level and help-seeking attitudes toward mental health, and c) the moderating effect of religiosity on the relationship between acculturation and help-seeking attitudes toward mental health. A bivariate correlations analysis was also conducted to assess the relationship between acculturation, religiosity, help-seeking attitudes and the main demographic variables, age and gender. Data did not support the research hypotheses in this study; acculturation and religiosity did not have a significant relationship on help-seeking attitudes toward mental health. Religiosity did not moderate the impact of acculturation on help-seeking attitudes. However, unexpected findings revealed that gender and age were shown to have significance in predicting help-seeking attitudes toward mental health. Furthermore, correlation analyses found that gender was correlated with help-seeking attitudes toward mental health, while age was correlated with both help-seeking attitudes and religiosity. Additionally, acculturation was correlated with religiosity. The implications for clinical practices and service providers are discussed and recommendations for future research are provided.

Asian Indians are the third largest Asian subgroup in the United States; thus, it is important to understand their culture and lifestyle. Collectively, they are more likely to consult family and close friends rather than seek help from mental health professionals. Asian Indians may not choose to discuss these problems because they feel it is unnecessary, or it could bring shame to the family. The purpose of this study was to look at the effects of acculturation on the help-seeking attitudes of Asian Indian parents and caregivers when considering seeking help for their children. Inclusion criteria included parents and caregivers of children ages 7-17, who are 18 years of age or older, of Asian Indian ancestry, have resided in the U.S. for at least one year, and who have been the primary caregiver for at least 6 months. Measures used examined culture, acculturation, help-seeking attitudes, and some basic demographic information. The survey was available online as well as on paper to be returned to the researcher. A total of 89 participants, the majority of whom were mothers and well-educated, completed the survey. Participants were recruited at community events, at a temple in Houston, and through family members and friends by emailing the online link. Analyses of the data indicated that acculturation does not impact openness to seek mental health services, level of mental health stigma, and intentions to seek mental health services. It was also shown that openness and stigma do not mediate the relationship between acculturation and the intention to seek mental health services. Finally, the top sources of help indicated by the Asian Indians in this study are intimate partners, mental health professionals, and doctors or general practitioners. There were participants who had taken their children to see a professional before, but opinions varied regarding its helpfulness. It is hoped that this study will provide valuable information to inform mental health professionals about an understudied population and to continue to emphasize the importance of understanding diversity and what that means for school psychology and the mental health field.
