Download or read book Semiconductor Electrodes written by Harry O. Finklea and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1988 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconductors have been studied as electrodes in electrochemical systems since the mid-1950's. However, it was not until the 1970's that the search for alternative energy sources, especially solar energy, led to an enormous expansion in semiconductor electrode research. One attractive option for solar energy conversion is the semiconductor liquid-junction solar cell, which can be designed to produce either electrical power or fuel such as hydrogen. Consequently the number of papers published concerning semiconductor electrodes has rapidly increased. Previous books have principally focused on the underlying theory (largely from solid state physics) and principles of operation of all semiconductor electrodes. It therefore seemed both useful and appropriate to review the field with the intention of collating information for each semiconductor or family of semiconductors, with contributions from authors who are all recognized experts in their field. Each chapter is devoted to critically assessing the recent literature on a particular semiconductor or family of semiconductors.
Download or read book The Physics and Fabrication of Microstructures and Microdevices written by Michael J. Kelly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: les Houches This Winter School on "The Physics and Fabrication of Microstructures" originated with a European industrial decision to investigate in some detail the potential of custom-designed microstructures for new devices. Beginning in 1985, GEC and THOMSON started a collaboration on these subjects, supported by an ESPRIT grant from the Commission of the European Com munity. To the outside observer of the whole field, it appears clear that the world effort is very largely based in the United States and Japan. It also appears that cooperation and dissemination of results are very well organised outside Europe and act as a major influence on the development of new concepts and devices. In Japan, a main research programme of the Research and Development for Basic Technology for Future Industries is focused on "Future Electron Devices". In Japan and in the United States, many workshops are organised annually in order to bring together the major specialists in industry and academia, allowing fast dissemination of advances and contacts for setting up cooperative efforts.

Download or read book Materials and Reliability Handbook for Semiconductor Optical and Electron Devices written by Osamu Ueda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials and Reliability Handbook for Semiconductor Optical and Electron Devices provides comprehensive coverage of reliability procedures and approaches for electron and photonic devices. These include lasers and high speed electronics used in cell phones, satellites, data transmission systems and displays. Lifetime predictions for compound semiconductor devices are notoriously inaccurate due to the absence of standard protocols. Manufacturers have relied on extrapolation back to room temperature of accelerated testing at elevated temperature. This technique fails for scaled, high current density devices. Device failure is driven by electric field or current mechanisms or low activation energy processes that are masked by other mechanisms at high temperature. The Handbook addresses reliability engineering for III-V devices, including materials and electrical characterization, reliability testing, and electronic characterization. These are used to develop new simulation technologies for device operation and reliability, which allow accurate prediction of reliability as well as the design specifically for improved reliability. The Handbook emphasizes physical mechanisms rather than an electrical definition of reliability. Accelerated aging is useful only if the failure mechanism is known. The Handbook also focuses on voltage and current acceleration stress mechanisms.

Download or read book Influence of Temperature on Microelectronics and System Reliability written by Pradeep Lall and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book raises the level of understanding of thermal design criteria. It provides the design team with sufficient knowledge to help them evaluate device architecture trade-offs and the effects of operating temperatures. The author provides readers a sound scientific basis for system operation at realistic steady state temperatures without reliability penalties. Higher temperature performance than is commonly recommended is shown to be cost effective in production for life cycle costs. The microelectronic package considered in the book is assumed to consist of a semiconductor device with first-level interconnects that may be wirebonds, flip-chip, or tape automated bonds; die attach; substrate; substrate attach; case; lid; lid seal; and lead seal. The temperature effects on electrical parameters of both bipolar and MOSFET devices are discussed, and models quantifying the temperature effects on package elements are identified. Temperature-related models have been used to derive derating criteria for determining the maximum and minimum allowable temperature stresses for a given microelectronic package architecture. The first chapter outlines problems with some of the current modeling strategies. The next two chapters present microelectronic device failure mechanisms in terms of their dependence on steady state temperature, temperature cycle, temperature gradient, and rate of change of temperature at the chip and package level. Physics-of-failure based models used to characterize these failure mechanisms are identified and the variabilities in temperature dependence of each of the failure mechanisms are characterized. Chapters 4 and 5 describe the effects of temperature on the performance characteristics of MOS and bipolar devices. Chapter 6 discusses using high-temperature stress screens, including burn-in, for high-reliability applications. The burn-in conditions used by some manufacturers are examined and a physics-of-failure approach is described. The
