Book Arbuscular Mycorrhizas Physiology and Function

Download or read book Arbuscular Mycorrhizas Physiology and Function written by Hinanit Koltai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-25 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years since the first edition of “Arbuscular Mycorrhizas: Physiology and Function” was published, an exceptional proliferation of interest in mycorrhizal biology has developed. This has been associated with advances in different research disciplines such as genetics, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and physiology, advances which have generated better insight into topics of mycorrhizal biology, including the mechanisms of host-mycorrhiza interactions pre- and post-penetration, the influence of the symbiosis on the host and its surroundings, and the evolution and diversity of mycorrhization. It therefore became necessary to both update and expand the book's coverage in this, its second edition.

Book Mediation of Conifer Root Growth by Mycorrhizal Fungi and Plant Growth Regulators microform

Download or read book Mediation of Conifer Root Growth by Mycorrhizal Fungi and Plant Growth Regulators microform written by Scagel, Carolyn F. (Carolyn Francis) and published by Ann Arbor, Mich. : University Microfilms International. This book was released on 1993 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many mycorrhizosphere microorganisms can produce plant growth regulating compounds in vitro. Plant growth regulating compounds are known to mediate root growth and development. In reforestation practices, conifer tree seedling growth and survival are linked to rapid root growth and development after outplanting. Multifactorial experiments were conducted to document variations in conifer seedling growth, survival and endogenous root indole acetic acid (IAA) content as influenced by exogenously applied plant growth regulators and inoculation with ectomycorrhizal fungi capable of differential in vitro IAA and ethylene production. Capacity for in vitro IAA and ethylene production by mycorrhizal fungal isolates was partially correlated to levels of endogenous root IAA and root growth in inoculated seedlings as well as field transplanted nursery-grown seedlings. Although degree of correlation usually varied with fungal isolate as well as conifer species, IAA-mediated changes in root growth and seedling survival could indirectly be attributed to in vitro fungal plant growth regulator production capability. Exogenous application of plant growth regulating substances at different times during seedling growth and development resulted in significant changes in growth, survival and endogenous root IAA content of both experimental seedlings and field transplanted nursery-grown seedlings. Although effects varied with conifer species and stock types, IAA mediated increases in root growth and survival are projected to be cost beneficial. These results are not only indicative of the complexity of interactions which can occur between symbionts in the mycorrhizosphere but also suggest potential methods for manipulating plant growth regulator mediation of conifer root growth for practical purposes in reforestation.

Book Mycorrhizae Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry

Download or read book Mycorrhizae Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry written by Zaki Anwar Siddiqui and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-27 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycorrhizal fungi are microbial engines which improve plant vigor and soil quality. They play a crucial role in plant nutrient uptake, water relations, ecosystem establishment, plant diversity, and the productivity of plants. Scientific research involves multidisciplinary approaches to understand the adaptation of mycorrhizae to the rhizosphere, mechanism of root colonization, effect on plant physiology and growth, biofertilization, plant resistance and biocontrol of plant pathogens. This book discusses and goes into detail on a number of topics: the molecular basis of nutrient exchange between arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and host plants; the role of AM fungi in disease protection, alleviation of soil stresses and increasing grain production; interactions of AM fungi and beneficial saprophytic mycoflora in terms of plant growth promotion; the role of AM fungi in the restoration of native ecosystems; indirect contributions of AM fungi and soil aggregation to plant growth and mycorrhizosphere effect of multitrophic interaction; the mechanisms by which mycorrhizas change a disturbed ecosystem into productive land; the importance of reinstallation of mycorrhizal systems in the rhizosphere is emphasized and their impact on landscape regeneration, and in bioremediation of contaminated soils; Ectomycorrhizae (ECM) and their importance in forest ecosystems and associations of ECM in tropical rain forests function to maintain tropical monodominance; in vitro mycorrhization of micro-propagated plants, and visualizing and quantifying endorhizal fungi; the use of mycorrhizae, mainly AM and ECM, for sustainable agriculture and forestry.
