Book excerpt: The research demonstrates that music therapy is an effective tool in the area of communication and behavior with children with autism and children with other learning disabilities. The hypothesis of this thesis predicted that music would enhance communication and decrease inappropriate behaviors. Qualitative data were gathered from interviews with music therapists and observations of students diagnosed with autism and other disabilities including attention deficit disorder, cerebral palsy, Down's syndrome, and other levels of mental retardation. Results supported the hypothesis and also supported the research in the literature that music lowered the anxiety levels in all individuals, resulting in increased learning.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of improvisational music therapy, based on Nordoff and Robbins' (1977) Creative Music Therapy approach, on autistic children's communicative behaviors. Eleven autistic children, ranging in age from 6 to 9 years, participated in individual improvisational music therapy sessions for a period of ten weeks. A reversal design was applied. The Checklist of Communicative Responses/Acts Score Sheet (CRASS), designed specifically for this study, was used to measure the subjects' musical and nonmusical communicative behaviors. Results strongly suggest the efficacy of improvisational music therapy in increasing autistic children's communicative behaviors. It examined any differences in the target behaviors between two groups of students with higher and lower-level abilities to communicate. The effects of using various musical instruments was also analyzed. A review of current literature relating to music and the brain, autism and social communication behaviors, as well as improvisational music therapy was described. Subjects consisted of thirteen students with autism receiving group music therapy. Baseline data for two sessions compared to intervention data for eight sessions revealed increases in the group's average number of eye gazes, facial expressions, attempts to communicate, and levels of joint attention.

Several researches will be incorporated that examines both the long and short-term influences of music treatment for autistic kids. The investigations showed that music treatment was superior compared to regular care treatment regarding the oral and non-oral interaction proficiencies. However, the studies were doubtful whether there existed impacts on the behavioral effects. The first part of this study illustrates the problem of lack of communication in autistic kids. It defines autism as explained by various health bodies and scholars. The second part deals with solution/intervention for the autistic children. It addresses the music as an intervention for verbal and non-verbal autistic children. The third part deals with the implementation plan and the use of improvisation music as a therapy in curing autism in kids. The fourth segment concerns with the evaluation method of the intervention addressing how facts are to be dealt with and scrutinized. The fifth section tackles the dissemination plan and the lastly, the paper reviews literature relating to autism and music therapy as an intervention. The researches were influential; however, they are limited to application in health system. Further, more studies having a better plan with larger models, within a more standard clinical environments are required to support the medical use of the outcomes. It is also important to note that utilization of the result of this study needs specialized educational and medical instruction.
