Download or read book Information Technology and the Corporation of the 1990s written by Thomas J. Allen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-01-06 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most pathbreaking and influential business books of the 1990s is The Corporation of the 1990s by Michael Scott Morton. Its expert view of how information technology would influence organizations and their ability to survive and prosper in the 1990s has become the benchmark of thinking about information technology. Now, in a supporting companion volume, Information Technology and the Corporation of the 1990s makes available the research on which The Corporation of the 1990s was based. The research was conducted at the Sloan School of Management at MIT by the Management in the 1990s program. The program was funded by a group of 12 industrial and government sponsors from the United States and Britain which included American Express, Digital Equipment Corporation, Eastman Kodak, British Petroleum, MCI Communications, General Motors, U.S. Army, ICL Ltd., Internal Revenue Service, Ernst & Young, BellSouth, and CIGNA Corporation. Information Technology and the Corporation of the 1990s aims to disseminate ideas on how organizations can manage the impact of information technology, and also to raise issues and stimulate further thought by both academics and professionals. The book is divided into three sections which cover the information technology revolution, strategic options, and organization and management responses. It incorporates the work of many important scholars including Charles Jonscher, Michael J. Piore, Thomas W. Malone. JoAnne Yates, Robert I. Benjamin, Gary W. Loveman, Eric von Hippel, Edgar H. Schein, Stanley M. Besen, Garth Saloner, N. Venkatraman, Akbar Zaheer, John C. Henderson, Jay C. Cooprider, Kevin Crowston, Jeongsuk Koh, Gordon Walker, Laura Poppo, John S. Download or read book Public Administration and Decision Aiding Software written by Stuart S. Nagel and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990-10-16 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contributed volume offers a summary of the latest ideas and applications concerning decision making software, as applied to administrative decision making and public policy-making. Stuart Nagel, the editor of this work, defines the essence of decision-aiding software to be software that is designed to enable users to process a set of (1) goals to be achieved, (2) alternatives available for achieving them, and (3) relations between goals and alternatives in order to choose the best alternative, combination, allocation, or predictive decision-rule. Containing contributions from both practitioners and theorists, this book should be of immediate value to those professionals involved in the field of public administration. The book is organized in terms of the major fields of public administration, which have been divided into staff/procedural activities, and into line/substantive activities. The first part of the book deals with cross-cutting procedures, including organization theory, policy analysis, and financial management. The second part deals with substantive chapters, including criminal justice, health, environmental-energy, and transportation as administrative fields. The third part of the book involves chapters which combine procedures and substance. It includes developmental policy, with chapters emphasizing the perspectives of people from developing countries toward the relevance of computers and decision-aiding software. It also includes the perspective of people from more developed countries trying to apply policy analysis methods to developmental policy. The third part also deals with public administration education. It emphasizes data banks that are available through telecommunications systems to aid in teaching various aspects of public administration procedures and substance. This book should be of interest to public administrators and scholars of the field.
Download or read book Business Process Re engineering written by B. C. Glasson and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1994 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this publication is BPR - Business Process Re-engineering - and the challenges and opportunities it brings to the field of information systems. The key to successful BPR, from an information systems perspective, is perceived to lie in integration. Papers included in the book accordingly consider the following three areas, both individually and in combination: Business Process Re-engineering; Information Systems Opportunities or Challenges; Information Systems Integration.Business Process Re-engineering is the restructuring of organizational processes through the innovative use of information systems and technology (IS/T). The aim is to refit or revamp an organization to survive today's economic downturn and to emerge refreshed and re-vitalized to meet its social obligations and accept its economic challenges into the next century.Information systems opportunities and challenges facing business process re-engineers revolve around integration. It is believed that unidimensional, specialized, segmented and piecemeal approaches have been adopted in IS/T, which do not work. If IS/T is to achieve its full potential for social and economic good, there is little need for holistic, multi-dimensional, comprehensive approaches. IS/T researchers and practitioners should look to integrate their efforts with those of others in at least three ways.Integrating theory and practice will encourage relevant research and more rapid technology transfer. Integrating technical and social aspects will help alleviate those implementation issues that have bedevilled IS/T for decades. Integrating applications and subject matter will result in synergistic, multi-disciplinary approaches and solutions combining the interests of the many specialists involved in the field. The broad-ranging examination of these factors offered by the book highlights the overall need for information systems and technology integration, if active responses to the opportunities and challenges presented by Business Process Re-engineering are to be achieved.
