Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies were made on the effects of neutron irradiation on the magnetic characteristics of metal alloys and ferrites. The magnetic properties included the coercive force, remanence, shape of the hysteresis loop, Curie temperature, and magnetic moment. Only the Curie temperature, was found to be relatively insensitive to neutron irradiation; all the other properties were modified by varying amounts. The radiation sensitivity of metal alloys and selected ferrites appears to be primarily related to the dependence of magnetic properties on the shortrange ordering of the atoms along certain crystallographic directions. Materials which can be easily ordered show the greatest sensitivity. It has been found that the application of a magnetic field during irradiation can cause directional ordering to take place which in many cases produces more desirable magnetic characteristics. The studies of the ferrites are more complicated since the effects appear to be related to atomic displacements as well as possible radiation induced oxidation. This has been deduced from magnetic measurements of irradiated samples coupled with neutron diffraction data of the same material. (Author).

Although the yield strengths and ultimate tensile strengths are increased su stantially for most materials, the ductility suffers severe decreases. This report presents these changes in properties of several structural metals for a number of neutron exposures within the 1.0 x 10 to the 18th power to 5.0 x 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm range. Data summarizing these effects on several classes of materials such as carbon steels, low-alloy steels, stainless steels, Zr-base alloys, ni-base alloys, Al-base alloys, and Ta are given. Additional data which show the influence f irradiation temperatures and of post-irradiation annealing on the radiation-induced property changes are also given and discussed. Increases as great as 175% in yield strength, 100% in ultimate strength, and decreases of 80% in total elongation are reported for fast-neutron exposures as great as 5 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm. At 10 to the 18th power n/sq cm, increases in coercive force and rem- and Sm-Fe garnets. Hysteresis loops (0.4 to 100 kc) were measured in the Ferramic materials (except R-4, R-5, and R-6), Ferroxcube 3-C and the garnets. In addition, complex permeability (300 to 600 kc) was measured in Ferramic R-1, S-1, and S-3 and Sm-Fe garnet. The effects of radiation on the hysteresis properties were insignificant after exposures below 10 to the 18th power n/sq cm. At 10 to the 18th power n/sq cm, increases in coercive force and rem- and Sm-Fe garnets. Hysteresis loops (0.4 to 100 kc) were measured in the Ferramic materials (except R-4, R-5, and R-6), Ferroxcube 3-C and the garnets. In addition, complex permeability (300 to 600 kc) was measured in Ferramic R-1, S-1, and S-3 and Sm-Fe garnet. The effects of radiation on the hysteresis properties were insignificant after exposures below 10 to the 18th power n/sq cm. At 10 to the 18th power n/sq cm, increases in coercive force and remanence were observed. The largest change observed was about 30%. The shapes of the hysteresis loops were not drastically affected.
