Book excerpt: Two versions of a CAI lesson on how a simple battery works were designed to elaborate conceptual and topographic information either verbally or pictorially. The effects of the type of information presentation on learning and attitudinal outcomes was investigated. Subjects in the treatment providing external imagery reported experiencing more internal imagery than did the group receiving the verbal version. The possibility of an interaction between eye-movements during tests of verbal and pictorial processing and attitudes toward the two CAI lessons was suggested by the data. These outcomes are generally supported by the literature on mental imagery in learning and memory.

Book excerpt: In this series of three studies, interactive graphics, using the plasma panel, touch panel interface of the PLATO system, were used to simulate the topography and functions of a battery, to teach elementary concepts in electrochemistry. The effects of these graphics were compared with verbal descriptions of the topography and functions in otherwise equivalent lessons; and with playing checkers for the same amount of time as used by postlesson conditions requiring subjects to reconstruct the graphic simulation from memory, or to attempt to imagine mental images of these graphics.

The goal of the program is to improve learning, decrease training time, and reduce training costs by developing and evaluating instructional materials designed to teach basic intellectual and affective skills. This book records the program's progress and suggests further avenues for research. Comprised of eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the theoretical underpinnings of the teaching and learning approaches to the improvement of education, followed by a discussion on DARPA's preliminary work on an empirically based learning-strategy training program as well as its efforts to expand and modify the program. In order to provide an intellectual foundation for this program, several fields are surveyed for potential learning strategies, namely, cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, behavioral modification, and motor learning. An instructional systems development approach for learning strategies is also proposed. The final chapter deals with models of evaluation extant in education and training and discusses the specific application of transactional evaluation to the DARPA Learning Strategies Research Program. This monograph should be of interest to students, teachers, and educational psychologists.
