Book The Effects of Independent Reading Programs Vs Guided Reading Programs on Reading Comprehension in Sixth Graders in a Special Education Setting

Download or read book The Effects of Independent Reading Programs Vs Guided Reading Programs on Reading Comprehension in Sixth Graders in a Special Education Setting written by Ashley Parker and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored the effects of independent reading programs vs. guided reading programs on reading comprehension in sixth graders in a Specialized Academic Instruction (SAl) setting. When comparing programs individually to determine the success of each program, the first conclusion of this study was that guided reading programs were more effective in helping participating students develop comprehension. An additional conclusion was that once teachers use guided reading then it is also beneficial to use both programs together because the independent reading builds on the guided reading. Teachers need to use guided reading to teach strategies for gaining comprehension and then allow students to use independent reading programs to implement those strategies on their own. The limitations to this study include the small number of students participating in the study, the use of only quantitative data, and some differences in the availability of materials between the two programs This study raises questions for further research into on effective strategies in teaching reading comprehension that do not correspond to a program.

Book The Impact of Comprehension Strategies Incorporated Into Sustained Silent Reading on Sixth Grade Students Reading Achievement

Download or read book The Impact of Comprehension Strategies Incorporated Into Sustained Silent Reading on Sixth Grade Students Reading Achievement written by James J. Eich and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This capstone answers the question how do comprehension strategies incorporated into sustained silent reading impact 6th grade students' reading achievement? I begin by defining the middle school reader, and then explore the purpose of sustained silent reading, provide a definition of reading comprehension, and investigate the effectiveness of sustained silent reading, specifically in response to the National Reading Panel's 2000 stance against sustained silent reading as an effective instructional practice to improve reading comprehension. I challenge the Panel's position by researching five reading strategies--think-alouds, conferences, reciprocal teaching, and response journals--and incorporate these strategies into my curriculum. I provide my results by looking at student journal responses, student reflections, reading test scores from the Measure of Academic Progress, and my own self-reflection. I prove that strategies incorporated into my sustained silent reading program had a positive and significant impact on my students' reading scores.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Did their attitudes toward reading change? Did the strategies enhance their understanding? Six Hmong students and one Latino student participated in the study. Using the research of Keene and Zimmermann and Harvey and Goodvis, I taught making connections, visualizing, and synthesizing. I conducted pre- and post-teaching focus groups and surveys, and took field notes. Results were positive. Attitudes of four students toward reading improved. Six of the seven students said that learning strategies increased their understanding of what they read. Benefits of the strategies included additional thinking about the book, helping to find the main ideas, and generating self-confidence as readers.

Book The Effects of Structured Independent Reading on Reading Comprehension Scores with English 9 Students

Download or read book The Effects of Structured Independent Reading on Reading Comprehension Scores with English 9 Students written by Amy Adams and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alburnett Community School District has shown an increasing trend of low reading scores, and as a teacher of English and language Arts, it is necessary to provide students with the strategies and skills necessary to become successful. As an attempt to improve reading scores within our school district, I implemented structured reading strategies within my English 9 course for an eight week period during the fall semester of the 2008-2009 school year. I used a quasi-experimental, quantitative research approach. To evaluate student reading comprehension scores, MAP test scored from the spring of 2008 were used as pre-assessment. MAP test scores from the spring of 2008 were used as a pre-assessment. MAP test scores completed in the fall were used as post-assessment and a comparison tool to measure student growth in reading comprehension. In the pretest stages, students completed a reading assessment using the Jamestown readings. As a post-test students were given the same Jamestown assessment. Students also completed a reading interest survey as a pre and posttest. The results yielded were inconclusive.

In other words, Donalyn Miller has solved one of the central problems in language education." —Stephen Krashen, professor emeritus, University of Southern California
