Many material realities that are taken for granted by society and by stably housed youth, are missing in the lives of youth and children who are homeless. In this research paper, I explore the ways in which this lack of stability affects the academic achievement of homeless students. Many of these young people are likely to experience difficulty in school, have issues with self-concept and self-esteem, and problems getting along socially with peers and staff members. Education professionals who understand the perspective of youths or children who are homeless should have the best interests of these students in the forefront of their teaching.

Prevention and intervention strategies for school counselors are then explored in order to promote academic and emotional success for children who are homeless. Finally, recommendations for future research are presented.

They do not realize that homelessness has an enormous and negative impact on growth, development, and learning for children. This is an issue that affects schools, communities, and society-at-large. Through qualitative observations in a one-room classroom in a homeless shelter and in classrooms of an elementary school located in a subsidized housing project, the development and use of language among homeless children, classroom interactions between students and teachers, and information regarding the effects of homelessness on children are closely examined. This book re-educates teachers, educators, and the general public, in order to spur a new, more accurate mindset about the reality and consequences of homelessness. The work's larger purpose is to bring about compassionate implementation of the solutions necessary to eradicate this problem.

Book excerpt: Homeless children show significant increases in educational gaps, when compared to non-homeless students, yet research on factors correlating these gaps, and preventative interventions programs are scares. This study examined the literature on childhood homelessness and the effects on student academic success. The results of this research project indicate that transiency, parental influence, and the homeless environments affect student academic success among homeless children. To uncover promising ways of preventing further academic decline, this project also aims to analyze interventions that can be applied to improve the academic achievement outcomes of homeless children. The interventions that were found to be the most effective were Literacy programs, and Executive functioning programs in comparison to the McKinney-Vento Act. Results indicate that children implementing Literacy programs and Executive functioning programs in their daily lives increase reading fluency, math, and the overall academic performance. The findings have implications for school based and shelter based cognitive development and literacy program design.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examines how homelessness negatively affects the school attendance and academic performance of school-age children in elementary school grades 3 through 6. A secondary data analysis was conducted on data collected from an Orange County school district to determine how homelessness affects students in the school setting. Academic performance was determined based on STAR Reading and Math Test scores. Results suggest that school attendance and academic performance are not significantly affected by homelessness. Additionally, results indicated that school attendance affects academic performance and that age is related to academic performance as well. Further research must be conducted to better assess the influence homelessness can have on children in school.
