Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to give students and researchers the confidence to understand, assess, treat, and research test anxiety. Marty Sapp presents the various cognitive and behavioral theories of test anxiety along with instruments for measuring test anxiety. He integrates statistical methodology, measurement, and research designs with actual research situations that occur within the test anxiety field. In addition, the SPSS codes for conducting sample reliability and validity are provided along with the codes for finding confidence intervals around population reliability measures. Like the previous edition, the logic of structural equations modeling is presented with the EQS structural equations program. Many researchers view test anxiety as existing of factors such as Sarasons’s four-factor model or Spielberger’s two-factor model. Both models can be easily analyzed by EQS. In terms of treatment, affective, cognitive, behavioral, hypnosis, systematic desensitization, Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and the Eye-Movement Technique (EMT) are presented. This book integrates applied research designs and statistical and measurement methodology that frequently occur in the test anxiety literature, but the methodological treatment of research is nonmathematical. Finally, extensive discussions of treatments for test anxiety are provided.

Book Accelerated Massed Desensitization in the Treatment of Test Anxiety Among College Students

Download or read book Accelerated Massed Desensitization in the Treatment of Test Anxiety Among College Students written by Kelsey Brown Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Test anxiety is a significant problem for an estimated 20% of the college population, creating substantial distress and impairing test performance. This study evaluated whether a brief (single session), group-administered desensitization procedure would decrease test anxiety in a sample of college students. Participants were 59 undergraduate students recruited through the Psychology department at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and were randomly assigned to control or treatment groups. The treatment group was guided through an Accelerated Massed Desensitization (AMD) process over one session lasting approximately 40 minutes. The control group took the same 40 minutes to watch an unrelated video. Pre- and post- test anxiety scores from both groups were measured using the Westside Test Anxiety Scale. This study found no significant differences between test scores of the treatment and control groups. Limitations and ideas for further research are discussed.

Book Accelerated Desensitization and Adaptive Attitudes Interventions and Test Gains with Academic Probation Students

Download or read book Accelerated Desensitization and Adaptive Attitudes Interventions and Test Gains with Academic Probation Students written by Richard Driscoll and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study evaluates the test-gain benefits of an accelerated desensitization and adaptive attitudes intervention for test-anxious students. College students were screened for high test anxiety. Twenty anxious students, half of them on academic probation, were assigned to an Intervention or to a minimal treatment Control group. The Intervention was a desensitization protocol which included stretch-tense, deep breath, release-relax, and positive suggestion sequences to expedite anxiety reduction and also positive adaptive attitudes associated to each of eight learning, review, and testing scenes. The intervention was presented via a 31 minute recording, which students reviewed an average of two times. Test gains were calculated from final tests and final grades after the intervention, minus the midterm scores from before the intervention. The Intervention group attained significant test gains over the Controls, with considerably stronger gains among academic probation students as compared to students in good standing. Test gains correlated positively to anxiety-reduction benefits. Methodological limitations warrant some caution in interpreting the findings, although the strength of the attained benefits do suggest that the accelerated desensitization does improve test scores for struggling students with high test anxiety. The use of the recorded intervention is seen to vastly reduce the amount of training and the number of professional hours required for an anxiety-reduction program. It seems reasonable to recommended that college retention programs for probation students screen for test anxiety and intervene with highly test-anxious students. (Contains 1 figure and 2 tables.) [A summary of this research was presented at the Annual Meetings of the American School Counselor Association (Orlando, Florida, June 27, 2005) and the American Psychological Association (Washington, DC, August 20, 2005).].
