Book Effects of Computer Based Cooperative Learning on the Problem Solving Skills of Grade Six Students

Download or read book Effects of Computer Based Cooperative Learning on the Problem Solving Skills of Grade Six Students written by Steven Poris and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2000-08-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to determine if sixth-grade students' problem solving skills were improved by means of their experience with a computer-based logical puzzle game designed to increase reasoning skills, and, in turn, problem solving ability. Students worked on this game either in cooperative learning pairs or alone. Baseline and post-experimental problem-solving ability was measured through the administration of a Problem Solving Test; Form A was utilized as a pretest for this purpose, Form B was used as a post-test. Comparisons of problem-solving ability based upon post-test scores (Form B) were made among four groups of students (N = 106): Group 1: Students (n = 26) who worked on the computer-based puzzle game in cooperative learning pairs Group 2: Students (n = 27) who worked on the computer-based puzzle game as individuals Group 3: Students (n = 24) who worked on a computer-based social studies simulation in cooperative learning pairs Group 4: Students (n = 29) who worked on a computer-based social studies simulation as individuals. A t-test comparison of post-test data between all students who worked on the puzzle game and all students who did not work on the puzzle game showed no significant difference between the two groups' problem solving abilities. However, an analysis of variance comparing the means of all four groups showed that the students in Group 1 performed significantly better (F=3.783, p

Book The Effect of Cooperative and Traditional Learning Structures on the Amount and Type of Students On task and Off task Behaviours

Download or read book The Effect of Cooperative and Traditional Learning Structures on the Amount and Type of Students On task and Off task Behaviours written by Hala Nadim Ghousseini and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between the classroom learning structure (cooperative vs whole class instruction) and the amount and type of on-task and off-task behaviours that the students exhibit during mathematics instruction. Four types of behaviour were of concern: On-task solitary, off-task solitary, on-task interactive and off-task interactive. Three main research questions were investigated in the study: 1. What kind of class structure(cooperative vs whole class instruction) promotes a greater amount of each of the following behaviours: on-task interactive, off-task interactive, on-task solitary, and off-task solitary? 2. Does the student's attitude towards cooperation affect the type of behaviour exhibited? 3. Is there interaction between attitude and classroom structure (Treatment) on the type and amount of on-task behaviour? The sample consisted of two intact classes consisting of 48 eighth-graders in the American Community School. Observations of individual students were used for data collection. The observations were conducted for a period of four weeks during mathematics instruction using the StRoBe observation instrument. The experiment was carried out in two phases. In phase 1 (the first two weeks), one class section was designated as experimental (cooperative learning) and the second class section as control (whole class instruction). In phase 2 (the second two weeks), the groups were switched. Three observers recorded the occurrences of the four types of behaviours-on-task interactive, on-task solitary, off-task interactive, and off-task solitary-on special grids designed for the two types of classroom structures. A MANOVA was conducted for the independent variable Treatment (cooperative vs whole class instruction) and the moderator variable Attitude towards cooperation (high vs low) on the four types of behaviour, for the two phases 1 and 2. Also a comparison of the mean differences between the two phases for the same class section was carried out using a t-test. Results showed that the cooperative structure promoted more on-task interactive behaviour and less off-task interactive behaviour than the whole class structure. The whole class structure was found to produce more on-task solitary and off-task solitary behaviours. No significant results were found for the Attitude effect and the interaction between Treatment and Attitude on the four types of behaviours.
