Book The Influence of Monetary Incentives on Goal Choice Goal Commitment and Task Performance

Download or read book The Influence of Monetary Incentives on Goal Choice Goal Commitment and Task Performance written by James A. Riedel and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanism by which monetary incentives influence goal choice, goal commitment, and task performance. It was hypothesized that monetary incentives influence cognitions that determine these events. One hundred and thirty subjects recruited for a work simulation study were assigned randomly to groups that differed in terms of the magnitude of incentive offered for various levels of performance. Overall the results suggest that the effects of monetary incentives on goals and performance may be explained, in part, by their influence on the process of goal choice. Goal choice and commitment were positively related to performance. Also, goals mediated the effects of incentives on performance. A research model is proposed for use in predicting performance. Keywords: Goal setting, Motivation, Expectancy theory.

Book The Effects of Goal Difficulty on Performance

Download or read book The Effects of Goal Difficulty on Performance written by Andrew C. Stedry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Effects of Goal Difficulty on Performance: A Field Experiment In spite of the theory and evidence indicating that organizations formulate goals for their activities y and the almost ubiquitous presence of budgets and quotas in organizations to influence behavior, systematic investigation of the effects of goals on behavior is rare. Psychological research on aspiration level has focused on how performance affects the aspiration level determination or how the latter is affected by personality variables or group influences. References will be found in Rotter (19510 and Lewin shag to studies which relate performance in Me; tasks to the aspiration level formation process used on the experimental task. Neither those works nor the more recent summary of Starbuck (1963) appear to indicate specific investigation of the effect of the aspiration level on performance in the same task. Both the individual and group levels of building and maintaining commitment are discussed.

Book The Effects of Goal Difficulty on Physiological Arousal Cognition and Task Performance

Download or read book The Effects of Goal Difficulty on Physiological Arousal Cognition and Task Performance written by Ian R. Gellatly and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conducted 2 laboratory experiments with 117 undergraduates to examine (1) the effect of assigned goal difficulty on arousal (self-report and heart rate), cognition (perceived norm, self-efficacy strength, and personal goal), and behavioral (task performance) measures and (2) the role of heart rate as a mediator of the goal-difficulty-performance relation. All Ss performed a task requiring cognitive and physical responses. Results of both experiments demonstrate that assigned goal difficulty affected heart rate, cognition, and task performance and that heart rate change was positively related to the cognitive and behavioral measures. Regression analyses suggested that a cognitive-affective mechanism may mediate the goal-difficulty-performance relation. Discussion is focused on the theoretical and practical implications of integrating an arousal concept within goal-setting theory. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved).

Book The Interaction of Goal Difficulty Specificity and Feedback on Task Performance

Download or read book The Interaction of Goal Difficulty Specificity and Feedback on Task Performance written by Karyll N. Shaw and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two experiments tested the hypothesis that the combination of specific, hard goals and knowledge of results (KR) will lead to better performance than do-best goals with and without KR and specific, hard goals without KR. It was also predicted that the latter three conditions would not differ significantly. The first study yielded equivocal support for the predictions, but these results were attributed to possible flaws in the design of the study. A second study which eliminated these potential flaws confirmed the predictions. One intriguing result was that specific hard goal-KR subjects, despite performing best on the task as a whole, performed worst on one sub-element of the task which reflected degree of incidental learning. The implications of the findings are discussed. (Author).
