Book excerpt: This quantitative, causal-comparative study was designed to investigate the effect of students’ participation in middle school interscholastic sports on their academic success among urban middle school students. The body of knowledge about the effect of participating in sports on academic achievement is comprehensive at the high school and college levels, but limited research has been done regarding sports participation among middle school students. The participants for this study were drawn from a convenience sample of 366 seventh-grade middle school students in eastern Pennsylvania during the 2018-2019 school year; stratified random sampling was also used to create groups with equal male and female participants. There were 108 student scores used for each research question. The independent variable for both research questions was students’ participation in interscholastic sports programs. The dependent variable for both research questions was the students’ scores on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment for reading and mathematics. The data were archival as student scores on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment were from the 2018-2019 school year. Differences between the two groups were examined by conducting two independent sample t tests. The researcher was unable to reject the null hypotheses for RQ1 and RQ2 and concluded that there was no significant difference in academic achievement demonstrated on Reading and Mathematics PSSA scores between the two groups (i.e. athletes and non-athletes). Recommendations for further research on this topic are to include more participants from multiple schools, require a minimum amount of time for participation in a sport, and use course grades to determine academic success.

Book excerpt: Although there are several educational benefits resulting from participation in high school sports, African American students do not always experience the positive outcomes that other populations share. The purpose of this causal comparative study was to investigate the effect of athletic participation on the academic achievement of African American high school female students. The sample consisted of 100 female African American 12th-grade students. Descriptive statistics were collected and analyzed. Analysis involved archival data to determine the grade point averages and graduation rates of student athletes and non-athletes in two urban high schools in Georgia. The study sought to determine if there was a statistically significant disparity between the grade point averages and graduation rates of student athletes and non-athletes and between single sport athletes and multiple sport athletes. Results indicate that there is no statistically significant difference in the grade point averages and graduation rate of student athletes and non-athletes. They also indicate that there is no statistically significant difference in the grade point averages and graduation rate of student athletes who participate in a single sport and those that participate in multiple sports. Findings suggest that participation in athletics should continue to be an area of focus for educational stakeholders as it relates to academic achievement. Recommendations for future research are provided.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effect that participating in sports had upon academics for middle school students. The findings were that athletes scored higher than non-athletes on standardized tests, but the difference was significantly higher only for the seventh grade. In addition, sixth and seventh grade athletes had a significantly higher grade point average than non-athletes, while the eighth grade athletes were significantly higher only in two grading periods. The findings, also, determined that no significant difference could be found between the in-season and out-of-season grade point averages of athletes.

Book excerpt: The concept known as "red-shirting" in sports to provide an athletic advantage by delaying a child's entry into sports is also prevalent among parents who perceive an academic advantage for delaying their children's school entry. Interest exits among parents, teachers, administrators and medical professionals regarding the potential academic benefits and drawbacks of delaying kindergarten entrance for one additional year, even if students meet the state entrance requirement. The parents who wait to send their children to kindergarten normally cite one or two reasons for keeping their child back a year - either the child's birthday occurs late in the year (July through December), making him or her younger than peers, or the child has exhibited less mature behavior (academic or social) than others of the equivalent age (Frey, 2005). This study examined if it is academically advantageous for students to be older than their peers in the seventh grade and if that advantage changes with a student's gender or parents' socioeconomic status. The study used the April 2011 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) mathematics vertical scale scores as they relate to students' chronological ages of approximately 1,300 students in seven middle schools in a northwest district of Houston, Texas. The students were broken into six cohort groups based on the date of their birth and the state of Texas's public school enrollment of September first. Archival data was gathered from the TAKS data files to conduct a descriptive statistics study and ANOVA tests to answer the following research questions: Is it academically advantageous to be older than your peers in the grade 7 cohort as indicated by the mathematics achievement scores in the state of Texas's TAKS tests? The results of this study displayed students with delayed entry perform similar to retained students than the traditional cohort or accelerated students. Does an advantage in chronological age at grade 7 differ in males and females? The study found gender does play a role in how the student will perform later in life. Delayed entry males tend to perform similarly to males in the traditional cohort, whereas females perform similarly to retained female students. Are there differences by socioeconomic status in relation to chronological age? The study found that delayed entry students on a free lunch plan perform similarly to students who have been retained. Through this study the researcher will add to the body of knowledge that exists regarding how a student's chronological age affects their achievement in mathematics. Frey, N. (2005). Book excerpt: This nonexperimental study examines the relationship between athletic participation by high school students and academic performance. Academic performance is measures in terms of three dependednt variables: grade point average, attendance, and level of courses taken by students. This investigation shows that students who participate in at least one interscholastic sport during the school year perform better academically than students who do not participate in at least one sport during the school year. ... The results suport the sypothesis that high school students who participate in interscholastic athletic programs achieve higher grade point averages, attend school more regularly, and choose to take more challenging courses, indicating higher educational aspirations, than students who do not participate in athletics. The results strengthen the rationale that stronger academic performance is a benefit of participation in high school athletics and for expanding athletic programs to allow participation for a greater number of students.

A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: During tough financial times, school districts are continuing to look for ways to save money by cutting programs. Some school districts look to the cost of athletics as a way to save money. Educators who consider this option may wish to consider the effects of athletics on the academic achievement, attendance, and discipline of student participation. This study involved one high school in the Central Valley of California and compared the athletes to the nonathletes in regard to their GPA, days in attendance at school, and the number of disciplinary referrals. Students were identified as athletes, if they participated in any of the fourteen sports offered at the school. Students were identified as nonathletes if they did not participate in any sports at the school. The sample number selected for both the athletes and nonathletes was fifty and they were selected randomly. After the students were identified, they were listed alphabetically. Every seventh student athlete was selected from a list of 355 students for this study and every ninth student nonathlete was selected from a list of 459 students for this study. A t-test of independent samples was used to analyze the data at the .05 level. The data that were collected and analyzed suggest athletes have a significantly better GPA and attendance record than nonathletes. Also, the results suggest that the number of disciplinary referrals between athletes and nonathletes was not significantly different.
