Book The Effects of After School Programs on Academic Achievement

Download or read book The Effects of After School Programs on Academic Achievement written by Jennifer Hawkins and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State and federal governments have provided funding over the last 30 years to support several educational reforms that include lower class sizes, higher academic standards, peer coaching programs, and several academic intervention programs. One intervention is the 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) after school program. The after school program that was selected for this study provided students 1 hour per day, 4 days per week of academic intervention and tutoring in mathematics and English language arts (ELA) for 36 weeks (180 school days). The purpose of this study was to determine if fifth-grade students who participated in an after school program experienced an increase in mathematics achievement before they transitioned from elementary school into middle school. Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) mathematics assessment scores of fifth-grade students who participated in the 21st CCLC after school program and fifth-grade students who did not participate in the 21st CCLC after school program were collected and compared. An ANCOVA was used to analyze the data. The results indicated that the students who participated in the program did not significantly outperform the non-participant students.

Book The Effects of a Reading Intervention Program on the Achievement of Seventh grade Students After One Year of Participation

Download or read book The Effects of a Reading Intervention Program on the Achievement of Seventh grade Students After One Year of Participation written by Allison Shaw and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators are constantly looking for ways to motivate students to become better readers and able to access all core curricula. One way schools and districts try to improve the reading skills of struggling readers is through intervention programs. The data selected for analysis were derived from seventh-grade students who participated in a reading intervention program. Participating students engaged daily in the Journeys reading program, which is designed for those who struggle in reading. This supplemental program was used outside of the core English language arts (ELA) program and occurred every day for a full year. Students were provided direct explicit instruction using 45 minute routines in whole-group and small group settings as well as computer based instruction. A paired sample t-test was conducted to determine if there was a significant difference between the means of pre- and post-test district benchmark scores after one full year of receiving instruction in the supplemental Journeys reading program. Another paired sample t-test was conducted to determine if there was a significant difference in the core ELA grade point average (GPA) of seventh-grade students after one full year of receiving instruction in the supplemental Journeys reading program. An alpha level of .05 was used to determine statistical significance. The analysis of the benchmark scores suggested that participation in the Journeys reading program may have a positive impact on reading comprehension.

Book Improving Reading Comprehension of Self Chosen Books Through Computer Assessment and Feedback

Download or read book Improving Reading Comprehension of Self Chosen Books Through Computer Assessment and Feedback written by Keith James Topping and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schools around the world use online programs like Accelerated Reader and Reading Counts to improve students’ reading comprehension of real books, but how can such software be used most effectively? In this unique resource, researcher Keith Topping analyzes independent research studies and brings you best practices on quality implementation to enhance effectiveness. He explains the evidence base for the programs in a comprehensible way and addresses many common questions, such as "Does it work?," "How should it be implemented to make it work?," and "Is it cheaper and more efficient in teacher time than what we were doing before?" He also discusses best practices for using the assessment data, for tailoring implementation in elementary vs. high schools, and for working with disadvantaged students. Appropriate for teachers, literacy coaches, curriculum leaders, and other stakeholders, the book will provide you with a strong research foundation and easily accessible information to help you fine-tune your understanding of the reading programs and implement them more successfully in your schools and classrooms.

Book Effects of an After School Instructional Advisory Program on the Academic Achievement of At risk Middle School Students

Download or read book Effects of an After School Instructional Advisory Program on the Academic Achievement of At risk Middle School Students written by Wendy L. May and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Great Recession, which began in 2008, many school districts had to make significant cuts to their operating budgets. Some of these cuts such as eliminating after school programs, extracurricular activities, and summer school made it challenging for school districts to close the achievement gap. As the economy began to recover, the California Local Control Funding Formula was implemented to direct more funds into school districts with a large population of students with special needs and at-risk of failing academically. These additional funds which are budgeted as per the Local Control Accountability Plan require school districts to be held accountable for student achievement and progress. Implementing an after school program is one strategy for meeting the needs of at-risk students. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an after school Instructional Advisory Program on the academic achievement of at-risk middle school students. The sample consisted of 25 seventh and eighth-grade students with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or below prior to participation. A paired sample t-test was used to determine if there was a significant change in overall GPA after one year of participation. The statistical significance was set at .05. The mean overall GPA after participation was significantly higher than the mean overall GPA prior to participation. The results of the statistical analysis suggest that participation in an after school Instructional Advisory Program may have a positive effect on the overall GPA of at-risk middle school students.
