Book excerpt: The traditional production measure of moral judgment has been the Moral Judgment Interview (MJI), which uses hypothetical moral dilemmas to elicit moral judgment. However, the MJI dilemmas have been criticized as artificial and may not be entirely appropriate for children, certain cultures, and practical moral situations. This unique volume utilizes and evaluates a new production measure of moral judgment, the Sociomoral Reflection Measure -- Short Form (SRM-SF), which substitutes brief stimulus materials and evaluative questions for the moral dilemma technique. The authors report that the SRM-SF exhibits an impressive degree of reliability and validity and is quicker to administer and score than other available measures. To illustrate these findings, this book offers the resources needed for the assessment of the Kohlbergian stage of moral judgment using the SRM-SF. These resources include: an up-to-date review of research and theory, a group-administrable questionnaire, an efficient scoring manual, and self-training exercises in assessment. Psychometrically sound and practical, the SRM-SF has the potential to become the leading moral judgment measure of the 90s.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The connection between knowing the right or good thing to do, and then actually doing it has long been a puzzle. "Watch what we do, not what we say" goes beyond the revealing admission of a former Attorney General of the United States to the broader reality of human behavior. Parents, teachers, employers, religious educators, and society at large have a deep vested interest in understanding the relationship between, and in knowing how better to educate for, consistency in moral knowledge and behavior. The past twenty-five years have seen much productive research on the development of moral reasoning. Doing the right or good act now needs comparable study. The unique contribution of this book is its exploratory study of the connection between moral thinking and action. Research on this linkage is in its relative infancy. A key aim is to begin to throw light on what factors intervene between a person's moral judgment and subsequent action. Valuable--although untested--theoretical models have been put forward concerning this interaction; they are used to guide the initial development of questions, but not to the exclusion of focusing on the unique insights provided by the young adults as to the "process" and "problems" of living one's "life-morality." This book begins with statements from the executive director (John N. Gardner) and the President of the University of South Carolina (John M. Palms), as well as a foreword by Ralph L. Mosher. Following the foreword, this book contains four sections comprised of fourteen chapters. Section 1: Origins and Results of the Original Sierra Project--(1) Nevitt Sanford on Community and Concern with Moral Values in Higher Education (Nevitt Sanford); (2) The Aims of the Sierra Curriculum: "On Leaping Tall Buildings In A Single Bound" (Ralph L. Mosher); and (3) Character Development Over Four Years of Undergraduate Study (John M. Whiteley and Norma Yokota). Section 2: Theoretical Underpinnings of the Sierrans Revisited Research--(4) Young Adulthood in the Life Cycle; (5) Doing the Right or Good Act: Theories of Moral Action; and (6) Further Theoretical Perspectives on Making Moral Choices. Section 3: Narrative Insights into Moral Action in Young Adulthood--(7) Moral Dilemmas from Young Adulthood; (8) Moral Dilemmas in Interpersonal Relationships; (9) Moral Dilemmas in the Workplace; and (10) Exemplary Sierrans: Moral Influences. Section 4: Research Conclusions and Future Directions for Promoting Moral Action--(11) Moral Dilemmas of Everyday Life: Voices of the Sierrans; (12) Exceptional Moral Behavior; (13) Strength of Character and Moral Agency; and (14) Toward Promoting Moral Action in Young Adulthood. The following are appended: (1) Moral Action Interview; (2) Moral Behavior Interview; and (3) The Moral Influence Interview. Content and author indexes are included. (Individual chapters contain references.).

Book Explaining Moral Judgments

Download or read book Explaining Moral Judgments written by Charles Levine and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theoretical rationale of the present study proposes that the quality of moral judgments made by respondents can be expected to vary depending upon: (a) the identity of the "other" implicated in the moral dilemma, and (b) the nature of the moral dilemma presented. In order to substantiate these two expectations, it is argued that role-taking can be seen as the cognitive process mediating moral judgments. When it is realized that different types of role-taking are elicited by different types of standpoints (i.e., the objects of the role-taking process) then one can assume, similarly, that different types of moral reasoning processes are elicited by both different types of "others" and moral dilemmas. The subjects who took part in the investigation were enrolled in introductory sociology classes at The University of Alberta. Each subject answered one of three forms of a moral judgment questionnaire (i.e., a "stranger treatment" (T-j), a "best-friend treatment" (T 2 ), or a "mother treatment" (Tg), with each questionnaire consisting of four moral dilemmas. The three major hypotheses advanced predicted: (a) that stage 3 moral reasoning (as measured by the Kohl berg instrument) would be used to a greater extent in treatments 2 and 3; (b) that stage 4 moral reasoning would be used to a lesser extent in treatments 2 and 3; and (c) that variation in moral dilemma would have a significant effect on response rate coded at all reasoning stages of Kohlberg's typology. With the exception of pre-conventional moral reasoning, results of analysis of variance indicated support for the above hypotheses. On the basis of these findings it is concluded that the process of moral reasoning may be reasonably conceptualized within the theoretical context of the "on-going social act." A discussion of several implications which follow from this research is found in the concluding chapter of the work. This discussion is concerned with the following topics: (a) the "stability-specificity" debate; (b) the adequacy of a bifurcation model of moral development; and (c) the definition of a "mature" moral judgment.
