Book excerpt: Caffeine consumption prior to resistance exercise has demonstrated significant increases in maximal strength in resistance-trained individuals, along with concomitant increases in heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP). Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of caffeine (4mg/kg) alone or in conjunction with acute resistance exercise in resistance-trained women on resistance exercise performance and cardiovascular hemodynamics. The acute bout of resistance exercise consisted of two sets of 10 repetitions at 75% 1 repetition maximum (1RM) for the squat and bench press, and one set to failure at 70% 1RM for both resistance exercises. Performance variables included the total load lifted, as well as the number of repetitions completed. Hemodynamic variables included HR, systolic and diastolic BP, mean arterial pressure, and pulse pressure. Measurements were taken at rest (Rest1), 45 minutes after consumption of the caffeine or placebo (Rest2), immediately post exercise (Rec1), and 10-minutes post exercise (Rec2). Paired samples t-tests were used to evaluate differences in total load, and the total number of repetitions performed during set 3. A 2 x 4 repeated measures ANOVA was used to assess the effects of condition (caffeine vs placebo) across the time (Rest1, Rest2, Rec1, Rec2) with a Bonferroni correction. Eight resistance-trained women (mean±SD: 23±3 yrs) completed the study. There were no significant differences between conditions for any performance variable. However, there was a significant (p=0.001) main effect of time for HR, such that it was elevated at Rec1 and Rec2, compared to Rest1 and Rest2. There were no significant interactions of main effects for systolic or diastolic BP. There was a significant interaction (p=0.04) for mean arterial pressure such that following caffeine consumption it was elevated at Rest2 compared to Rest1, and was different than Rest2 following the placebo. There was also no interaction or main effects of pulse pressure. Collectively, these data demonstrate that caffeine ingestion prior to resistance exercise significantly augments mean arterial pressure at rest, and has no effects on resistance exercise performance or other cardiovascular hemodynamics in resistance-trained women.

Caffeine, a central nervous stimulant, is arguably the most frequently ingested pharmacologically active substance in the world. Occurring naturally in more than 60 plants, including coffee beans, tea leaves, cola nuts and cocoa pods, caffeine has been part of innumerable cultures for centuries. But the caffeine-in-food landscape is changing. There are an array of new caffeine-containing energy products, from waffles to sunflower seeds, jelly beans to syrup, even bottled water, entering the marketplace. Years of scientific research have shown that moderate consumption by healthy adults of products containing naturally-occurring caffeine is not associated with adverse health effects. The changing caffeine landscape raises concerns about safety and whether any of these new products might be targeting populations not normally associated with caffeine consumption, namely children and adolescents, and whether caffeine poses a greater health risk to those populations than it does for healthy adults. This report delineates vulnerable populations who may be at risk from caffeine exposure; describes caffeine exposure and risk of cardiovascular and other health effects on vulnerable populations, including additive effects with other ingredients and effects related to pre-existing conditions; explores safe caffeine exposure levels for general and vulnerable populations; and identifies data gaps on caffeine stimulant effects.

Caffeine has also been commonly used as an ergogenic aid when performing repeated-sprint activity. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of 200 mg of caffeine during repeated-sprint activity on heart rate, rating of perceived exertion, blood lactate concentration, and sprint time. METHODS: Thirty-two students (Age: 22.19 ± 2.29 years; Height: 170.58 ± 10.18 cm; Weight: 74.78 ± 12.76 kg; BMI: 25.59 ± 2.78) participated in the study. The study followed a randomized crossover trial, in which each participant ingested either 200 mg of caffeine (CAF) or placebo (PLA) 45 minutes prior to each of the two exercise sessions. The sprinting protocol consisted of three sets of six maximal-effort 30-meter sprints. Each single sprint covered a 15-meter distance between the starting line and the secondary marker, such that each subject sprinted down to the secondary marker and back to the starting line. Each of the six sprints in a set were separated by a total of 20 seconds using an active recovery modality. Following each sprint set, heart rate, blood lactate concentration, sprint time, and the rating of perceived exertion were recorded. RESULTS: The caffeine trials were not significantly different than the placebo trials for heart rate and the rating of perceived exertion. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate caffeine's effects on performance, hemodynamics, and measures of pulse wave reflection alone or following an acute bout of resistance exercise in young, healthy, resistance-trained women. Eleven resistance-trained women completed acute resistance exercise sessions on the squat and bench press with repetitions to failure. Measures of hemodynamics and pulse wave reflection were measured at Rest, 50 minutes following ingestion (caffeine or placebo), as well as immediately following the acute resistance exercise and 10 minutes during recovery. There were no differences between conditions on acute resistance exercise performance, hemodynamics, or pulse wave reflection at any time point. Specifically, heart rate and cardiac output were significantly augmented and mean arterial pressure and total peripheral resistance were significantly decreased compared to Rest and following ingestion for at least 10 minutes. Stroke volume was significantly attenuated immediately following acute resistance exercise, however, was significantly augmented at 10 minutes compared to Rest and following ingestion. These changes were accompanied by decreases in measures of pulse wave reflection, including augmentation pressure, time to peak of the first pressure waveform, and systolic pressure time index for at least 10 minutes. Collectively, this study suggests that caffeine may not further alter measures of hemodynamics and pulse wave reflection beyond the individual influence of acute resistance exercise in resistance-trained women.
